Manu Kone

Santos would be pretty perfectly described as an industrious box to box type.
I'm under the impression he is a natural holding midfielder, used out of position due to Caicedo when playing for Chelsea, and he largely seems to be seen as more of a passer/ technical player than gritty/ athletic/ energetic?

I wouldn't really know, don't recall seeing him play before...

Combative box to box player who puts in tackles, passes the ball forwards and likes to get into the box with a nose for goals. He can be the more defensive of the two but with Mainoo both will be expected to do their part and both will get forwards at times.

With that said, we very will might be looking to play 2 8s next to eachother and dominate the ball.

I'd personally want a more classic number 6 who covers loads of ground quickly as our next signing. Berge would be my first choice right now.

I'm guessing we'll sit deep but look to play neat passing football. That's what Carrick seemed to favor last year and it should suit Maguire and Tielemans as slower players. Bruno is great on the counter ,too. I just don't see Carrick wanting to bench Mainoo, even with the extra 12-14 or so games we should get in Europe and the cups. And Tielemans has been one of the better Prem CMs for a couple years now.

Right now, I'd say our starting XI is:

------------------Sesko----------------------
----------------------------------Mbeumo
----Cunha-------Bruno------------------
--------Mainoo-Tielemans------------
---Shaw-Lisandro-Maguire----Dalot
----------------Lammens----------------

and if teams sit back against us we have a midfield 3 that's comfortable on the ball, though Maguire will be a target on the counter, the midfield can be run through without a 6 and on the attack, Mbeumo is up and down against teams sitting deep and Shaw can't really overlap anymore and Dalot isn't a particularly good creator.

We could really use a quality attacking fullback.

To get more on-topic, I'm guessing Santos will be good at dealing with clever #10s and narrow wingers and strikers dropping deep, but there will be games when having someone who can win aerial duels (particularly if Lisandro plays) and who can cover larger spaces is a necessity.

but the fact that this isn’t further along when it seems like a fairly easy deal to get done tells me that he isn’t the priority.
Agree.

Feels like we could be waiting for something, it could be Madrid to resolve their Rodri/Tchouameni/Camavinga situation.

Wouldn't say we are less technical than Arsenal: Rice and Zubamendi or whoever they play next to Rice, but the physicality of Rice is a big bonus
Liverpool: Gravenberch, Szobozlai - certainly not more technical - more physical
Chelsea: Enzo and Caicedo - again, not more technical but surely more physical
City: Elliot and Rodri? Elliot isn't more technical than Mainoo, quite the opposite, and Rodri is one of the best in the world - very technical, probably better than Tielemans, and although not blistering pace, very strong in duels. Tie probably, but more physical to City
AV: we robbed them of their best in Tielemans, and Onana is good when fit, but more physical than technical.

Not sure which clubs are standout better technically than United at this stage? I think physicality seems to be the bigger factor that we ultimately lack. Mainoo isn't fast nor is Tielemans, albeit a slight upgrade on Casemiro.

With Cunha, Bruno and Amad, I think we also have a very good technical and creative attack behind Sesko who is, OK. To me, speed and physicality seem to be where we struggle.
Because you are just comparing your chosen midfielders, but if you look at the full lists, for example City have Bernardo, Rodri, Anderson, Reijnders, Gonzalez vs Mainoo, Tiele, Kone, Santos, there is a notable gap between us.

If you want to include attacking mids then Bruno vs Cherki.

A DM is the profile of midfielder we don’t have yet though, and it’s been widely reported that’s the kind of 3rd mid we’re after
We do not have a creative technician either.

City should not be compared to because they are cheating.

We are starting to put together a balanced midfield with lots of quality. We‘ll see how it stacks against other teams.

City doesnt have Bernardo...

Mainoo and Tielemans are up there, two of the best midfielders in the PL.

They have more depth, but not a clear cut advantage for their starters.

Cherki vs Bruno: Cherki is neater and a better dribbler - still, I’d take Bruno every day of the week, so again technically we’re fine.

Also, I agree that City are probably ahead of us, but the margins aren’t as massive as they were.

Cherki is notably more technical than Bruno, he's clearly not a better player but he's more technical.

Bruno and Tielemens cover that aspect. Both are playmakers. Who's the 'creative technician' in other top PL clubs deeper midfield?

Who said deeper midfield? I was thinking compared to Reijnders, Cherki, Ødegaard, Wirtz , Scott.

So why doesn't Bruno fall into that category sorry?
He's not as technical. The players I have listed all have elite close control, touch, and movement with the ball, being able to play really well in tight spaces and move/play through them. The closest thing we have is Amad but he plays out wide.

That's nice, not what I was talking about.
You said a ‘creative technician’. Bruno is creative, and pretty technical, just because he can’t drift past players before passing it backwards like any of those players you mentioned doesn’t really detract from that

I really don’t think that sort of player is a priority for our play style.

He's not a technician. The problem is that we sometimes become stuck against either teams very good at pressing or very defensive teams who sit deep.

Ah fair enough - read 'creative technician' and found it odd as he's more creative than the aforementioned bunch, and has superior passing technique and vision.

Seen your response to the other poster though, so sounds like you're specifically on about a dribbler.

Yea, someone who's very good in tight spaces and creative with it.

Which is why Tielemens has been brought in.

I‘d say Bruno is a technician. He can strike the ball whichever way, lay passes anywhere, thread the needle, fake out defenders before shooting and has great ball control/first touch.

You are talking about a very specific thing, dribbling in tight spaces I‘m going to guess. Mainoo has that, as well as Amad.

This is very similar to the arguments people use to say England players are very technical. His first touch and close control are decent, but not great at all.

Mainoo is technical but he's not creative,

He‘s still a great technician, he does unbelievable stuff almost every game these days.
Mainoo is technical but he's not creative
That‘s right, he‘s a connector, he‘ll get the ball to Bruno or a winger who will do something with it.
Tielemens is a great passer of the ball, but hes not someone who breaks down deep defences.
How often do we play against deep defenses? 9 out of 10 times we are being pressed and that‘s why we need press resistant midfielders (and Licha).

Tielemans and Santos both have good offensive contribution. Bruno is the best there is in creating chances.

Things change though, teams have adapted to this weakness of ours in the past, it will probably happen again.

Bruno really isn't a technician even though hes an elite passer.

I disagree, he‘s a technician and even a pretty great one. He has the technique to execute his intelligent vision. Can hit the ball whichever way and make it go where he wants to.
