His only competition as the worst midfielder United have signed post-Fergie is Schneiderlin.

Will be seen as deadwood before the end of next season

Not good enough on the ball which was so obvious before he was even signed

And Schweinsteiger who spent more time flying to watch his girlfriend play tennis.

In the end I think it’s almost more infuriating that after he gave the ball away, he never even made a cursory attempt to jog back - his body language as he walked back showed a complete lack of accountability. Good on Amorim for immediately hooking him.

Lost the ball desperately looking to play backwards as usual. Woeful signing.

He is what he is. Decent enough, lacks top end ability.

The thing that gets me is that so many fans got into transfer wankery and wanted him when he had so many obvious limitations.

Is he a Mendes player ?
Yes. We signed Ugarte early in the season, carving space for Joao Neves (a move Mendes also orchestrated). All of a sudden we’re beating Real Madrid for the signature of Lenny Yoro. Albeit at an inflated fee.

Mendes giveth, Mendes taketh.

He’s been terrible for a few weeks now let’s face it.
Looks like a little boy in league games. Doesn’t have the physicality or speed of thought to compete with even bang average pl midfielders.

Put him in a system like this where he has to take responsibility for ball playing and it’s a recipe for disaster. .

Alan Smith was a better midfielder and he was a striker !!
Same can said of O'Shea, Fabio Da Silva and Brian McClair.

It's not top end though is it? He's been run down by Bilbao (*2) and West Ham in the last two weeks. These are not close to top end teams.

You'd hope he's fatigued or playing with an injury or some kind of debilitation that will be revealed post-season, otherwise he's wilting, from average to below the bar.

United are a Mendes plaything each summer.

I’d be happy if he ends up just being an average Premier League midfielder at this rate….

Awful for the ball loss on the 2nd goal. Never a freekick, he's too weak in general. Very dissappointing the last few months

It's hard for me to see how he can work in a midfield duo, because I think that both players in such a system need to have quite a well-rounded skillset, and he clearly doesn't. However, I know he played in this system under Amorim at Sporting, and was presumably quite good in it seeing as PSG came in for him. Can someone enlighten me as to what gives?

Cas on his last legs is still miles ahead of him, at even the things Ugarte supposedly excels at.

It was just an odd choice, a one dimensional defensive midfielder who lacks exceptional physical qualities and has to play at 100% at all times to be effective, meaning he burns out quickly, rarely finishes a game and needs rested constantly.

On top of that, by having to be at 100% just to get by, the mental fatigue is brutal for him, and that leads to errors and turnovers in itself because he has to stop, think, execute in fluid and dynamic situations that don't afford him the time he needs to process and make his move.

High octane games against opponents who are just playing without those pauses for thought are incredibly suffocating conditions.

You don't want this guy deep in any kind of melee. But we don't play a 3-man midfield with a runner, so he's got no position to thrive in.

Told you lot after the first few games that he was crap. It was just obvious from the get go that he was technically miles off it. Sometimes it’s just plain to see, you don’t need to watch a player for two years to see they just don’t have the ability. See Hoijund as another obvious example.

I bet PSG couldn’t believe their luck when we came calling. They’re probably still laughing about it now.

Just doesn't look up to it at any point. Makes Milner look like a Leviathan.

Same deal with Amrabat, one or two good games but you see how slow they are to turn, he had many similar moments in midfield.

Another poor purchase.

Should have been an immediate red flag when Enrique gave up on him after one season.

Kind of player that will play for Inter or Juventus in 2 years from now and will be one of their best players. If a good offer comes, he should be moved.

He’s definitely putting in progressively worse performances but he’s still not in the top 5 issues in this team.

Why can't our recruitment team find good footballers?

They present mediocre footballers to our fans as the only option every summer and wonder why the fans are desperate for them when there's no alternatives presented.

After keeper and striker, how can a serious issue through the spine of the team not slot in? Mistakes in his position lead to goals and/or decide games - that's why we got him in in the first place.. to prevent that from happening... and now he himself has become the exploit.

New guys in charge, same old story. PSG pissing their sides they managed to offload him for such a fee.

If only we could do that well at selling. Jesus christ he was dropped from PSG for playing terrible in the farmers league.

The guy is one of the worst passers of the ball I've ever seen for a central midfielder. We got rid of Fred for being a loose passer of the ball, this guy can't even position his body correctly to pass.

Why do we keep buying players with serious lack of technique? feck this "he works hard". Buy players who know how to play with the ball, ffs.

He’s like a midfield Wan-Bissaka who will be targeted for a heavy press by the opposition as he sh*ts his pants and handles the ball like a hand grenade.

Observing top teams' midfielders over the last few months in the CL highlights why United has struggled to reach that level for so long.

No he wouldn’t, I’m not sure what makes you think this? He’s one of the most talentless players I’ve ever seen at this level. I’m in disbelief that it’s taken almost 7 months for people to notice

I said it before but his issue isn't a lack of technique, he is above average in that department. His issue is between his ears, for a reason that only he could explain he generally wants to play backward, safe or to stall before passing. The goal that provoked comes from that, earlier in the game he did the same thing but no West Ham player pressured him and gave a nice pass to the left but on West Ham second goal they decided to actually pressure him and he was done, initially he had the space in front of him but decided to stand there instead of attacking the ball.

That was his issue with PSG, it wasn't a lack of technique, he isn't actually worse than Neves in that department but their attitudes in possession are night and day.
