Good option for games against opposition that are expected to dominate possession (although who doesn't nowadays) but for games against teams where we are expected to play through the lines then he can't be trusted. Has been poor for a while now, and today encapsulated that with the second goal. Had plenty of time to get the pass away or shield the ball but hesitated and got punished.

I said it before but his issue isn't a lack of technique, he is above average in that department. His issue is between his ears, for a reason that only he could explain he generally wants to play backward, safe or to stall before passing. The goal that provoked comes from that, earlier in the game he did the same thing but no West Ham player pressured him and gave a nice pass to the left but on West Ham second goal they decided to actually pressure him and he was done, initially he had the space in front of him but decided to stand there instead of attacking the ball.

That was his issue with PSG, it wasn't a lack of technique, he isn't actually worse than Neves in that department but their attitudes in possession are night and day.
You are having a girrafe if you think he is the same as Neves technically. Getting 90 percent pass completion from passing sideways and backwards 5 yards does not make a good technical player

I'll never trust Caf transfer threads about how good players are, particularly outside PL signings that the vast majority haven't seen play much.

They are both roughly around the same level, neither is very good nor bad. Their attitude in possession is totally different though and it has nothing to do with pass completions. Ugarte puts himself in trouble because he is subpar mentally not technically.

The major issue might be mental but NO, he is worse than Neves in terms of technique. Neves has a better touch and superior dribbling and passing ability.

Yes. We signed Ugarte early in the season, carving space for Joao Neves (a move Mendes also orchestrated). All of a sudden we’re beating Real Madrid for the signature of Lenny Yoro. Albeit at an inflated fee.

Mendes giveth, Mendes taketh.
You’re likely right. In fact, I read something along those lines in one of the fanzines not long after we signed him.

He’s horribly inconsistent on the ball. Sometimes he plays a decent game, other times he’s a huge liability.

We signed Ugarte very late in the window, long after we signed Yoro?

Seeing how he fared against Guimaraes and Loftus-Cheek in the CL was enough to question this transfer. He looked very ill-suited for the PL in those games.

A few years ago I said going into the season with McFred as your starting midfield pair is a sackable offense

Surprise surprise, Ole was sacked the next season.

Going into next season with either Casa or Ugarte in the first 11 will get Amorim sacked. Pick one for a bench/impact option and sell the other.

I don't agree with that. In terms of touch it's about the same, the difference with PSG is that Neves isn't caught in possession as easily because he doesn't stall, he keeps moving. And I could be wrong but I don't think that Neves tried or completed more dribbles than Ugarte did with PSG. Their strength and weaknesses from a technical standpoint are roughly the same but the attitude and understanding of the games aren't, they are in two worlds in that department.

Edit: I had a look and funnily enough they have the same dribbling stats this season in the league, not that it says a lot but it's kind of funny.

He is miles worse than neves technically

He is what he is. Decent enough, lacks top end ability.

The thing that gets me is that so many fans got into transfer wankery and wanted him when he had so many obvious limitations.
Always the case with transfers, especially midfielders. I remember how in August 2023, after our poor start, almost everyone here was convinced (based on no real evidence) that Amrabat was going to be a transformative signing and save our season.

What other top team brings in a player like him for big games? We should be moving away from this.

He isn't, I'm an absolute hater of Ugarte but he really isn't. I think that people are at the same time underrating Ugarte's technique because he is now not wanted and overrating Joao Neves technique because PSG are doing well. It's a sort of repeat of what people did last summer with Ugarte compared to our players.

Maybe he can become a RWB..

This genuinely made me laugh. I bet someone on the CAF eventually recommends that too since we love generating alternate positions for players not good enough in the position we signed them for.

After keeper and striker, how can a serious issue through the spine of the team not slot in? Mistakes in his position lead to goals and/or decide games - that's why we got him in in the first place.. to prevent that from happening... and now he himself has become the exploit.
Keeper, striker, 10, wing backs are all more important at the minute.

And to that coaching and management.

For me Ugarte comes below all that.

No chance, striker and general lack of goals, keeper practically letting Sunday league goals in, wing backs creating literally nothing. That’s 3 areas, multiple positions more important than Ugarte.
You’re massively underestimating the value of having central midfielders who can actually receive and progress the football. I don’t blame you really, the club has done so as a collective for the past god knows how many years.

No I’m not that the main responsibility on his CM partner so that slot just be sorted out before Ugarte.

I can’t believe people don’t think having 2 stikers who don’t score, a keeper who causes the whole defence to panic and wing backs that offer nothing are not bigger issues that a defensive CM who generally does the job of 2 most games cause his partner has been either a slow out of form Casemiro, a knackered Eriksen or a young Mainoo who covers the ground like my nan.

Anyway it’s all subjective and we all see what we want to see.

luis enrique knew exactly what he was doing, replacing Ugarte with Neves. Im 100 percent sure he doesnt think they are similar players technically. Plus Neves is 4 years younger. In 4 years it wont even be worth comparing.

Casemiro has been better than him for a couple of months and has been our best CM in that period

Of course he knew and I said it the minute we were linked with him, I don't rate Ugarte but the issue wasn't technical, on that front he wasn't actually different to Neves. Neves is a better player but it's not due to their respective technical levels, it's because Neves is proactive with and without the ball, while Ugarte is a reactive player who generally chose to stall or pass the ball sideways even though he has shown on too few occasions for PSG that he was perfectly able to carry the ball or pass it as well as Fabian or Neves. Also on a sidenote Fabian had a similar issue before this season but he somehow went back to his old self during the Euros.

I think this is mostly correct, he just doesn't process the game quickly enough. You see it in his passing, he can strike an excellent pass out to the wings, but he generally needs time and space to look up, assess his options, think about his options, think about the technique he is going to use then play the pass. It just takes too long for him to get to that point and is key to why he will generally always take the safest, obvious option.

He’s been better than the absolute rubbish he was previously serving up for about a year up to about a month ago. He’s been able to provide some good moments going forwards but his actual CM work is still not good enough.

As I said hes been better than Ugarte. So both have not been good enough

You didn’t say he was better than Ugarte but glad you agree
If you rate a player who was pretty much a disgrace for a year because he’s had some decent performances over a month or so fair enough. I’d happily put real money on who’s had the better season.

Did I say anywhere I rated him? Or did I say he was better than Ugarte and both were not good enough?

If you rate a player bombed out of PSG for not having any technical quality on the ball then good for you

How do you know he bombed out cause of that? That’s your opinion.

What’s the point of saying he’s been better for a month, pointless comment really.

Typically, you fix the spine/core of your team and then the limbs - the limbs don't matter so much if the torso can't do its numerous jobs correctly.

Keeper is a role we take for granted, but we've seen how important they are by way of the CL semis - we've won big trophies with great keepers and lost out on trophies with awful ones - keepers aren't a problem until they are... silent partner, like not knowing you have hypertension. Or something.

CB's, midfield (DM, CM, AM) and then forward.

I'm aware of our problems elsewhere, but you're absolutely fecked if you have exploits through your centre. You can mitigate for everything else, or fix them in stages. The centre doesn't allow for that as it is a pure co-dependency; one shit CM drags everything around him down. One bad keeper can destabilise an entire backline; one bad #9 completely bottlenecks the attack, etc. etc. fixing the central core is always a matter of the utmost urgency, which is why it's panic stations when it goes bad. Like, real panic stations, not the bemoaning stuff of a weak flank.

Because the manager said so when he dropped him

I really wish we would sort out the midfield, we have been so many years without a true midfield player who can control a game. The continued neglect of this aspect kills me - Ugarte is a good honest lad but not clever or technical enough.

Because the manager said so when he dropped him
Of course he did.

FYI, Ugarte has the 3rd most MoMs and a higher overall average rating than 3 players on the Cafe, 2 of those are Evans and Heaven!

As I said he’s levels have slipped over the last month or so he’s been nowhere near the top 3 issues in the team like others have said.

Yes he did and he isn’t good enough period

Surely he played himself out of the final today. Casemiro has been the better player for a couple of months now and the way Ugarte lost the ball and then didn't run back for the second goal is just unacceptable.

But you’re focusing on Ugarte as being the main issue in our midfield when he’s had some absolute dross playing next to him for most of it and generally covering the ground of 2 midfielders against 3 man midfields a lot of the time.

Do you not think replacing Casemiro, Eriksen and /or Mainoo is more of a priority in CM than replacing Ugarte?

Liverpool have been amazing in the last 6-8yrs playing a fairly average midfield cause the defence, strikers and full backs have all been elite.

I’ll still stick by my comments, GK, ST and WBs (in this formation), plus the midfielders mentioned above need to be sorted before Ugarte.
