Can he come good OR worth selling him for around 30-35M.

I really wish he can adjust to the league as he got a big heart to give it all when he plays.

I thought he played well in the 2nd half against Leeds. Gives us more physicality in the middle and was tidy with his passing. I expect a good season from him.

I’d say it’s a bit ominous that we are apparently targeting a defensive midfielder. He’s been pretty underwhelming so far.

Why was he bought for such a large fee when everyone was highlighting his flaws before the transfer?

Not writing him off but he does need to show more. He was excellent in that game at Anfield and showed flashes of being a good player at times but we need more from him.

Not sure him and Bruno are a great combo though.

One of those players where its hard to know where his personal shortcoming end and the general shortcomings of the team begin. He had games where he looked good and gave us some tigerish energy in the middle of the pitch. He had others where he couldn't pass it 12 yards. I hope this season we at least we see his true level, by seeing him playing in a stable team.

Didn’t watch the game but I saw a couple of comments online suggesting he played well - but I note no comments in this player performance thread?

The one YouTube highlight of him on Sky showed him winning the ball in final third, nutmeg a man and through ball to Amad for (?wrongly called) offside goal. Is that as good as it got?

Honestly, and this coming from a big critic of the guy, he played really well.

He had a few good moments but he commits to challenges far too high up the pitch consistently. He simply doesn’t have the athleticism to chase the ball the way he does. He was at least steadier with the ball which was good to see.

Didn't you get the memo? You're only allowed to comment on negative performances in this forum.

I liked his performance. Yes some mistimed challenges. But over all very good performance.

I like this video it shows his importance.

Hopefully he can up his game as I think him and Mainoo could work very well together.

I think they definitely can and have already. 3 of our best performances last season came with both in midfield away at Anfield, City and at the Emirates in the FA cup. Anfield in particular I thought they were exceptional together.

He was very good, probably our best player personally and they’ve combined pretty well with Mainoo in the middle. The offside was legit though, sadly, that was a beautiful team goal.

The Caf has already decided he's a bad player so you won't see much in the way of positive comments.
He was fine yesterday, him and Mainoo allowed us to dominate West Ham in the first half.

Good to hear the positive stuff. I still have high hopes for him - albeit maybe irrationally. He’s only 24!

He was fantastic last night, yes it was pre season, but he has it in his locker to be a great player for us. Hopefully he’s up to speed with the prem now.

Played the dirt work role very well and him and Mainoo seemed to be on the same wave length except for the goal. He is definitely a better passer than some give him credit for and his aggression is important to the system. Thought he was excellent.

I was thinking about this yesterday because he seemed far more at ease in a way I hadn't seen for ages. Namely, since Ronald Araújo and Nico de la Cruz got injured for the NT and his passing got instantly poorer in that setting.

Instead of four decent and mobile options in different directions he suddenly had two. I noticed late in the season his exchanges with Dorgu were a car crash/bag of nerves, and had a gut feel he had done better with Casemiro rather than Bruno alongside him (for starters Casemiro being an option = Bruno is another further up) and had a better understanding with Licha behind him than the chopping and changing thereafter.

In a nutshell, he is OK if you give him options, but too limited if his options are obvious and the oppo can act accordingly. With Cunha and a more settled Dorgu and no Bruno as the predictable go-to pass he looked far more comfortable.

Maybe it was just WHU not being at the races, but I refer back to the NT evidence, which is basic common sense: more and better options makes passing easier.

It’s interesting that you mention ease as I think a lot of our recent issues with the midfield has been about providing options rather than personnel. This is more in relation to United of course as I’ve not watched Uruguay in a while.

I think some fans underestimate the difficulty that can come with trying to understand a new system and then the difficulty playing it with with a constantly rotating cast. Also when incorporating players new to the club like Dorgu.

I agree that his passing range isn’t in the world class range but his not a pivot and expectations that he will pay as such from deep will disappoint some. For me his at his best when breaking up the opposition play and playing what’s in front of him.
This benefits him as it allows him to come onto the ball into space and with options as you say make a pass easier.

I think Amorim was bang on about him. His biggest issue is confidence. When he's feeling it and is willing to pass over longer distances then he is a very decent midfielder.

I also think he covers ground better than a lot of people seem to think. His starting position just needs some work.

I understand why many are concerned, but all in all, his debut season was fine - not a disaster and no evidence that he just isnt up to it. Patchy and a bit indifferent at times, in a really poor team - but I think also his better moments were enough to think he could come good. Big season for him and if no improvement then yeah, look at moving on, but I'm quietly optimistic for him. He joined late, then lost the manager who signed him, it was tricky circumstances to get up to PL speed.

Broke up play incredibly well but actually looked more composed on the ball which was great to see.

Shoehorning Bruno into CM will be foolish of Amorim.

Play Mainoo/Ugarte in the middle, Bruno and Cunha as the CAM's and I guess Mbuemo will end up playing as the CF.

The problem is our back 5 sitting so deep ! We need at least one of the 3 CD’s to join misfiled to move things forward !! In a proper system Ugarte is a very useful player !!!!

Very good game from him, and even this ended up being a good bit of play but... if our South American lads want to just stop doing that two-footed stamp tackle thing at their earliest convenience, that'd be lovely.
