Also interesting to see if things change. If we have a comfortable lead at the top by then (doubtful), then it makes sense not to spend £20m+ for 6 months of Guehi. He doesn't move the needle in any potential CL run either.

If we're trailing or in a dogged title race, then maybe we'll change our stance on an early buy. Though on the flip side, another 6 months of Guehi is more valuable to Palace if they're still in European contention.

Several sources have linked Guehi with Real Madrid, including the Telegraph, as noted in our own Christinas "Presss Gossip" thread last Wednesday. He fits the current Madrid policy of signing end of contract players to avoid large transfer fees and, as the reigning England centre half, is definitely talented enough to improve their suspect defence.

Depends if he is interested in other clubs and signing him in January is what guarantees you are the club who gets him. He's definitely better than a centre back you would get for £20m next summer.

Madrid were supposedly wanting to sign Konate on a free next summer which is one of the reasons Liverpool were wanting to secure Guehi. If both are available on a free I would take Guehi over Konate any day of the week.

I think you'd be in the minority on that one. On his bad days Konate can be worse than Guehi but his ceiling is miles higher, and he delivered in most of our games last season.

I don't personally think Konate has a higher ceiling but that is a matter of opinion, I would certainly prefer the player who almost never has bad days as I mostly want my defenders to just do their job. Liverpool have been free scoring in recent years which can cover up for defensive frailties but that is not something you can count on forever. From a Manchester United perspective I would much rather you extend Konate than sign Guehi.

Yeah 100%. I hope we get Guehi but if him going to Madrid on a free means we get to keep (and extend) Konaté I'd be all for that. Injuries aside, he's pretty much impossible for us to improve on for a realistic fee.
 
Predictbly, everybody wants him on a free :lol:



Loved the idea of him as a long term Maguire successor but it feels like Harry may well stick around a while longer and I'm fine with that

I'd try for him regardless. He could play on the left of the 3 and upgrade Shaw/Licha

He‘s probably one of the main opposition should Upamecano not extend his contract or if they manage to move Kim.
 
I realise Guehi to Liverpool is still the most likely scenario but considering their recent downfall, I think it may be worth us making a cheeky offer. He would solve a position we need to improve.
 
We have Shaw, Licha and Heaven for LCB. Unless we planning to move one or more of them, I doubt we go for him

We should be moving Shaw and Martinez on, definitely Martinez as he's too injury prone to be relied upon.

Our main aim should be European football next season, Shaw at a push would be fine as a squad player.

Guehi on a free is no brainer.
 
Would Real Madrid not take a serious look at him if he's on a free next summer?

Fits their recent transfer model. Not sure why they seem to be constantly linked with Konate when he's chucking in awful performances on a weekly basis currently.

Also amazed Chelsea didn't try to get him back in the summer for the price he was going for.

Couldn't agree more. Get Guehi in if possible. Martinez/Shaw should be moved on this summer.

I would love it if we go for Guehi. But somehow get a feeling, we are still not shrewd operators when it comes to recruitment
 
Poor City how are they ever supposed to cope with some defensive injuries without having to immediately sign someone new :(
 
I think City will go hard after him with the Gvardiol news. He'll cost a massive windfall - Palace will make a big demand to let him go, plus they'll have to match whatever wages+signing on bonus Guehi could get by waiting until the summer and I imagine that package is very significant given the clubs competing for his signature.

Its a no-brainer in one sense (quality PL-proven CB who plays on the left) but I'm not totally convinced of the broader fit for a team like City. He's spent years playing in teams with 40% possession, low defensive lines, and often as part of a three. Vieira's team had a bit more of the ball and was a bit more on the front foot, but they still weren't a possession dominant team by any stretch. This incarnation of City has 60% of the ball and tends to push its fullbacks quite high, leaving two defenders to cover a high line. I wouldn't be surprised if in the long term he is a backup/squad option for them.

I do wonder where Liverpool stands and whether they still might get in the mix. They need homegrown players desperately, there aren't many that are good enough for them, and Guehi is one of the few at a position of need. It would be kind of stupid not to go after him.

Ake can't play three games a week according to St Pep. They recalled a 19 year old kid from Watford today to be on the bench on Wednesday.

If Guehi signs this window he is starting pretty much every game straight away.

From the journo tweet think 30m + bonuses to get up to the fee Liverpool wanted to pay would get him this window.
 
Going to Bayern on a free in the summer if they can’t extend Upa (or sell Kim).
That’s obviously just a guess.

Had to look who Khusanov was, thought he was a youngster. Turns out just another 40m signing from a year ago.

Must be good being city when you can just sign replacements for all your injured players. And this is why pep shouldn’t be credited as much as he is. When he loses players during the season with no transfer window he struggles. We seen that when Rodri got injured…
 
The PL should just scrap the January transfer window, we'd see how the likes of Pep would manage then.
 
To be fair, didn't Man Utd badly struggle when Roy Keane picked up his cruciate injury? Didn't they finish way off the pace that season?

Losing a Rodri or a Keane is a monumental blow.

United finished a point behind Arsenal but it was the only year in 6 that they didn't win the league. You're obviously right though that missing world class players for a prolonged period massively hinders a team and with Rodri he's had a lot more setbacks after the major injury, basically since the Euros final 18 months ago he hasn't really strung a run of games together.
