Marcus Rashford | 2026/27 Performances

Does it though? Like what are you talking about? You’re telling me you’ve never worked around lazy colleagues? Does it make you give up too?

There’s absolutely no chance Rashford being there will affect the spirit from last season - Cunha, Amad, Sesko, Mbeumo all being in the first team now and being such hard workers changes that.

People just making shit up. It’s not ideal he’s staying here on the wages he’s on, but feck me it doesn’t mean the team will capsize

If you're running your arse off and a lad on twice/three times your wage jogs onto the pitch and walks around the yeah, you'd be fecked off. That leads to frustration, arguments and bad morale. It's a team sport and if you have a bad apple stinking up the pitch and training then yes it will cause problems.

Just like it causes problems in normal day to day work environments.

If Rashford decides to bring the right attitude this season then he'll definitely mend wounds with the fans. But I'm not holding my breath. Hope he proves me wrong.

I don't really agree with the "soldiered on" point. Who exactly are we talking about? Rashford left because he'd fallen out of favour with Amorim and the relationship had clearly broken down. Meanwhile, most of the other attacking players from that period have either been sold or are on their way out - Garnacho, Antony, Hojlund, Sancho and potentially Zirkzee. So I'm not sure there's this group of attackers who battled through the Amorim era that Rashford would now somehow be disrespecting by getting minutes.

The reality is that hardly any of those players improved under Amorim and the football was awful. Amad is probably the one exception you could make a case for, and even he spent a lot of that period being used at wing-back. By the end, Amorim's attack was largely made up of the players he'd brought in himself.

I also don't really buy that Rashford simply "downed tools". He wanted to play football and, once it became obvious he wasn't going to get that under Amorim, he wanted to leave. That's not to say he handled everything correctly, because he clearly didn't. There were legitimate questions about his professionalism and, if Carrick does reintegrate him, that side of things absolutely has to change. From what I understand, though, he's largely conducted himself professionally throughout his career.

I also think the lack of leadership around him over the last few years gets overlooked. It shouldn't be used as an excuse because ultimately Rashford is responsible for his own behaviour, but where were the senior characters pulling him aside and keeping him grounded? This is a player who, when he was flying, was mixing it with some of the best attackers around. He's also one of the most scrutinised English footballers around, whether he's playing well or badly. With that profile comes an even greater responsibility to behave professionally.

Personally, I'd back Carrick to manage that situation properly. Rashford still has to earn his place like everybody else, but if Carrick believes he can contribute, I don't see why we should automatically shut the door on him because things went badly under the previous manager. The environment at United has been pretty toxic for a while and Rashford clearly hasn't looked happy for a long time. We're already starting to see a different atmosphere under Carrick, so if Rashford comes back into a better team, with clearer leadership and a manager who understands the club, I'd rather judge him on what he does from that point onwards.

I appreciate your take on what went down with his exit, but I simply don't share it.
As for the rest, IIRC, he was not part of the squad the got us 3rd place last season, yet got a nice bonus thank to that.
It's not really similar, but hope the consequences are not the same as when we brought A. Sanchez in when Rashford and Martial were rotating well enough on the left wing...
The die has been cast anyways, so can only hope it goes well and that Carrick works his magic.

How he responds to a setback will be interesting. For all the head pointing he’s seemed routinely so easily blown off course by criticism or being under pressure or scrutiny. There’s always been a considerable fragility there.

If fans start to get on his back or some of the pundits begin to point out some not so desirable traits in his game, is he going to be able to handle it? He’s one of the more experienced members of the team on paper, but in reality he’s probably still one of the least mature in terms of what criticism or any kind of attention that deviates from sycophancy, will do to him.

If he is back, but doesn't get regular playing time which loses him his England spot that's when it could go pear shaped.

This is precisely it. When the going got tough, he hid and didn't use that as an opportunity to fight. He sat the tough times out and is now back in the squad. Just don't don't need these types of players add his huge wage bill. Just remove him, move on.
The going has been tough for his entire career at Utd. Constant different managers, untold amounts of abuse, being pushed to play through serious injury, playing in some really poor Utd teams.

Yet he stood up countless times, one of our most consistent big game goalscorers, top scorer since Sir Alex retired and very close to the top 10 of all time.

He was essentially positioned as a leper and so he said maybe it's time for him to have a new challenge.

Not that he's perfect but he's nowhere near what some on here make it sound like.

Also we've tried very, very hard to "remove him" that hasn't happened because the club chose to put him on a huge contract.

?? What on earth is your problem? I am hardly being negative, see my post right before yours? Energy vampire??

Ugh, whatever. Forget this noise, I'll leave you to it.
Its just depressing, not you specifically...

I guess my post might fall into the 'energy vampire' category, but it is based on watching Rashford play a lot of games without any intensity off-the-ball. I still naively think we're going to win the league this season, so I'm not letting my scepticism around Rashford's work rate dampen my positivity!
Agreed, if Rashford hasn't come back to set things straight then i don't see him causing any unrest, he'll just get maligned and end up elsewhere... we have many more options nowadays ;)

1. Got that contract under completely different management
2. We have very publicly tried to get it off our books

It's a none issue. He also got that contract after scoring 30 goals. If any of our current attackers score 30 goals then we will very likely move them very close to that level of salary pretty quickly. Good thing to strive for.

Yep. If Rashford doesn't execute the manager's instructions in his first few appearances then Carrick could easily do what he did with Ugarte last season and just barely use him (without going full Amorim and slagging him off in press conferences). He would be an expensive bench warmer, but that's not Carrick's problem.

I am super against him coming back and still hope to see him move on before the window shuts.

However, purely from a football perspective, you could do worse than having Rashford come on against tired legs. He’s always been electric so him coming on when we need a goal isn’t the end of the world.

None of that is relevant. If a 350k player is walking around putting feck all effort in then it'll piss players off. Especially if putting zero effort in leads to dropped points. Even more so when that player will be training with the group every day.

I fecking hope we would not repeat past errors and offer daft contracts based on a small purple patch of form.

It was an insane contract to offer him at the time, as discussed at some length on here when it was issued. Either way talking about Rashford is boring as feck, done to death and I'd rather do anything else than continue in here.

Ultimately it's up to Rashford to attempt to mend bridges and until the season starts we won't know if he's prepared to do that.

He will have his uses. If you want to strip everything else away. How you’ve described is probably the most sensible way to use him. I agree that limiting his exposure and gametime is going to be key. You really don’t want to have him on the pitch for 90 minutes, getting visibly irritated by the audible irritation of supporters at his diminishing effort. You want him out there for a limited amount of time.

It's 100% relevent. It won't piss any players off.

If a wide player, say Thompson suddenly scores 22, 21, 5 and 30 goals across the next 4 seasons then they will probably get a massive contract.

Someone deciding to comment on something then saying it's really boring to talk about is very boring.

Would you not expect the squad we have now to act appropriately if they do get pissed off? As in speak to him about what the new expectations are and what will happen if he doesn’t follow them.

All the best most successful teams have a leadership group that deal with these issues themselves. If ours can’t then we need to ask questions about that as well.

That's right. Was he not valued at 90M+ or something when PSG was allegedly in for him, couple years back? And now Barca woudln't even pay measly 25M for him. And the whole "that's because his salary is high" is complete horseshit. If his salary was not high, the price for a decent attacker should be 40-50M+, even the one his age.

Unfortunately, there's absolutely nothing good about him coming back. Alas, his oversized ego and to some extent greed, and United's inability to have any spine whatsoever is very likely to cause major problems for us in the coming season. There's no place for him at United, anymore. If Carrick decides or is forced to start him in games, we are f...ed
And yet some believe everything will be so different now, a new player/person and, more importantly, a much better footballer. I hope we sell him and move on for good. No need to jeapardize what we have been building

Those people need to watch/remember this. And it's not like it was the only one while he was at Barca...

He looks like he absolutely hates it here.
He definitely doesn't look enthused, can't blame him though, it really is a marriage of convenience. We want him gone and he wants to be gone, that's the bottom line, and he won't be fooling anyone if he tries to look overly giddy.

It's still weird a bit off seeing his moody mug among the other guys, who are much more relaxed and smiley. Wonder what Cunha is thinking (that must be a bit awkward with the shirt number and everything).

I've watched that as suggested, what am I supposed to take away from it?
You can take away from it whatever you like.

As an example, however, you can remember that this was not the only case, he was missing open goals left and right during his marquee season at Barca. Because Barca is Barca and they play in La Liga, they were creating tons of chances so overall his stats still looked pretty great.

But when he comes back to PL, where there may be only 1-2 chances per game and does crap like this, fans/media/etc won't be as forgiving. And that assumes he will even try as hard / do as well as he did at Barca... which is a big assumption, likely not realistic

It would sure as hell make me want to have a raise.
We all want a raise. Shite behaviour and poor professionalism if you’d ever consider giving up or throwing your toys out the pram to get it

Nah, it’s more like your senior colleague who was once the go to now not giving a shit and collecting twice your wage. They’re biding their time til retirement - you’ve just got to shrug your shoulders. It doesn’t affect you if you just crack on.

Besides we’re not taking about a completely useless lump here, Rashford will without a shadow of a doubt be able to contribute more than Hojlund, Zirkzee, Sancho. Like I say, he just can not be relied on to start or play long periods, so as long as he realises that I think all will be sound.

Marcus won’t budge on his wages and no club will pay his wages. He will play for United and Carrick will get something out of him. And once that happens all that history will be a distant memory.

He might get some big goals which will make things more rosy, but unless he commits himself fully and puts a shift in for every game he won’t be a starter or be a long-term United player. Up to him to make it happen.

Have you ever managed a team of people? It can absolutely effect things. I've seen it countless times where your worst employee slacking off has a negative effect on the morale of the staff who put the effort in. That's why it's imperative poor performers get a kick up the arse or a kick out the door.

Of course, we don't really have a great idea what Rashford is like behind the scenes and what effect it may have on the rest of the squad. But it's a legitimate thing to be wary of.

This thread is going to be fun when he misses his first sitter of the season.

You can blame him, he could take a pay cut to move.

A proper confidence player who doesn't like tough love, is what it looks from where I'm sat at at least. Needs to be coddled and managed properly if he stays, which looks very likely.

So far Carras looks like a very good manager, being a United legend, having also played with him should act as an advantage too. On paper he could be very valuable this season, different skillset to Dorgu and Cunha, also frees up Cunha to deputise at Striker along with Mbeumo so we don't need to sign backup there. Focus all the funds for a LB and CM.

Imagine his fierce supporter and the PR machine and the circus he'll bring

To be honest i never trully know what began first, him downing tools or amorim singling him out. Both are wrong though in the eyes of the club. So in not sure if we should reintegrate him

For his faults, Amorim was the first guy to have to balls to confront Rashford on his nonsense and actually do something about it. His work rate has been a problem for years and at successive clubs.

You really don’t have to dig very deep into some of the criticisms Barecelona fans had of him; poor pressing, lack of Intensity, little interest in defensive with. And that was a guy supposedly busting his balls for a permanent contract. The idea he’s going to come back here and suddenly be a changed man is pie in the sky

How was he singled out?

I think everyone can live with him missing a sitter. His alibi attempts to win a header and refusal to track back is what will get people to the edge if he does it again

I've come round to him being integrated, mainly due to a lack of choice over the fact.

I won't complain if he doesn't always perform like a £300k a week player as we decided to give him that but if he isn't tracking back and working hard, he needs to be dropped it's that simple, we can't carry players that don't work hard.

Yeah, he did some good stuff but I saw those comments as well. We'll just keep him because we have to until January or next summer. Then if there's no clubs interested keep for another season until his contract runs out in 2028. Same with loaning Onana out until 2028. Mount's contract expiring that year as well.

I meant you can't blame him for not looking overly enthused.

We'd be fooling ourselves if we try to pretend Amorim didn't massively improve the culture around the place, just because he was out of his depth in terms of winning EPL matches. He did improve the culture, and a big reason for that was getting characters like Rashford and Garnacho gone.

There's not much we can do now, but at the first opportunity, he needs to be gone. For his camp, it may actually be wise lowering his wage demands if he wants to keep having a decent career. Running down your contract to leave for free isn't always wise, especially if your reputation is tanking alongside it. He should just ask Sancho.

He downed tools way before Amorim.

Remember even RR having to start a very raw Elanga over him a food few times, and repeatedly saying in pressers that this is the biggest club in the world, you have to embrace the challenge with enthusiasm which Elanga did (with very little quality). He downed them for EtH too. He may have done for Ole even but I don't remember that clearly.

I 100% blame the club for putting him on a pedestal and making him think he was much more than he actually is - I remember the photoshoot they had where everyone else was standing but they had Rashford slouched and manspreading on some chair with some man united sheet? Unoriginal by the way because they copied Alan Iverson.

I know he has his supporters, but downing tools is not hard to spot when games are watched by 10s of thousands in the stadia and televised all over the world. There was an instance where a move we made didn't go exactly how he wanted and he just gave up on the move because he was annoyed, turned out the ball was still alive and we missed the chance with the crowd incensed.
He had his chance here repeatedly and squandered it.
