Marcus Rashford - Barcelona “we don’t want him” | High salt content warning

Saying what we all know.
26m for Rashford is hilariously poor.

Is he 1/3rd of the player of the 3 we signed in the summer, or everyone else going for that fee? Very obviously not.

Yes the wages, but still.

If the consensus is that he's a cancer that under no circumstances can be allowed to poison the good vibes in our squad (I disagree but that's another conversation entirely), that weakens our hand. Or to quote a philosopher, we "have no hand". The logical conclusion is to take a "loss"* on the transfer fee and move on.

He's going to the World Cup, so there's no leverage on this front.

*It's not a loss, he's an academy player

This angle of Rashfords free kick is insane. Possibly the best one of his career? Did he hit the valve on the ball?

No loan fee, they cover his full salary and can take him permanently for 26m.

Edit: Rashford Salary is approximately €18m, and they paid that in full, so the club didn't place 0 value on him
They're paying him 14m this year and told him he needs to go down to 10 if he wants to stay

Realistically he can make that money back in endorsements by playing for a title winning Barcelona side as opposed to finding a less prestigious club that would be willing to match his United salary. The top players make far more off the field than on it these days and if he is being well asvised he will factor that in.

Ouch, bet you regret this post now? :wenger:

I don't. I still think he's not worth his salary but he's good enough as a squad player for Barcelona.

Good goal though, wasn't expecting a lot from us this game (or season) and it couldn't get much worse than it has already been. :(

As for Manchester United they shouldn't let Barcelona get him for a discounted price, the free previously agreed was a fair one.

He'd be mad not to agree. The weather. The city. The club. Money isn't everything.
Well "their" media claim he's happy enough with that

They still don't want to pay United 30m though

I’m ok if he stays in Barca.

Do people think hes gonna come back, give us consistent top performances , dig deep if things aren’t going well and won’t turn on the club/fans if he gets any grief or criticism?

Not interested in seeing him walk around , maybe get a goal , cup his ears to our fans as if we are lucky to have him and act like he is better than old Trafford.

It’s not all his fault but I think both player and club are better off seperating.

So by your rationale, if this was good value for the club already, why not continue this way? Just loan him for free again. That’s what Barca want. Why are we asking for money then?

You know the answer to this. Because there is no value for the club. We loaned him just to put him on the window hoping someone will pay for him. It would cost us more than Rashford’s annual salary per year to replace him. It already does in fact.

We replaced him with Cunha. We paid 63.5m for 5 years for Cunha (amortised at 12.7 per year) plus 150k weekly salary (7.8m annually in salary). That’s 20.5m per year. Cunha is currently costing us more than Rashford is costing Barca.
My point is, as a one time deal for summer 2025, to loan Rashford out and get someone to pay his massive salary in full is a good deal for the club now, summer 2026 is totally different, because now, Rashford might attract interest and we've chance to get a fee for him.

As for comparison between Cunha and Rashford, the difference is Rashford decided he does not fancy it at United anymore, and the club handed him a massive contract 12 months before he decided he does not to be at the club, so it is obvious the club's options are limited, getting Cunha became a necessity literally because we had to replace Rashford.
They're paying him 14m this year and told him he needs to go down to 10 if he wants to stay
Well, as long as United paid 0 salary to Rashford is the point I am making, and I do not think Barca see him as an option in the club next season, because it seems they do not want to pay the very low transfer fee in the option, so even if he accepts the 10m, Barca will probably not pay the fee

Then we will have a group of good clubs fighting for him.

I'm fairly certain he has no desire to come back, but if he did I wouldn't be averse. It's one less signing we need to make this summer.

The notion of him being a virus in the dressing room is overblown I think. He was certainly acting unprofessional on and off the pitch too often but he needed to get his head straight, I think that's happened now.

At the end of the day he was booted out of the club by the worst manager we've ever had (who almost drove Mainoo out as well) so on that basis alone I'm open minded about a return.

He is overpaid for certain, but even worst case scenario he will cost us £30m over the next two years. If you minus the salary of any new signing that's an incremental of £15-20m. Then you have the actual cost of a new signing which would be at least £30-40m for anyone decent. Plus he can play as centre forward. I honestly don't think the economics are that bad.

But all said - I don't think he wants to come back so it's kind of moot.

INEOS don’t want the optics of a ‘looks like ha can’t be bothered’ player sitting on the bench earning £300k per week. That salary will always be the sticking point for any options

Does he sit on the bench though? An in form Rashford would be a starter, especially since Mbeumo and Amad have been off the boil for months.

I don't think any pl manager would accept that level of laziness.

He's been shit for years. The odd purple patch when he could be bothered doesn't count for anything in the grand scheme of things.

This. He has already shown a distain to the fans and the club with unacceptable performances and getting paid more in 2 weeks than most of us will earn in our lifetime.

If it was just one terrible manager he clashed with and he really wanted to come back then maybe.
But his attitude was gone before.

When people talk about bad apples in the dressing room I don't know this applies to Rashford because if it did then surely the players in the dressing room would be giving Rashford the Garnacho treatment? Instead basically the whole team he played with for United are in the comments of his title post showing love. Bruno is like a proud dad every time Rashford does anything of note.

I like that he keeps up with them as well

What makes you think Mainoo is trouble? Seems a really level headed lad?

I mean maybe Butt doesn’t mention them because he didn’t see them as players with poor attitudes?

Just the way he was under Amorim. I have the same feeling with him that I had with the likes of Garnacho, Rashford and others over the last few years. All of them turned out to be true. Entitled beyond belief, but will roll out the big PR offensive when they get what they want or are back in the team. The antics of him, his family and friends under Amorim has been quickly overlooked by fans because they didn't like Amorim and the Mainoo drama was an opportunity to pile on Amorim. It was the same under Jose when he went to war with the likes of Pogba and Martial etc. The fans sided with the players and the happy clapping commenced when they were free of Jose, but those poor attitudes never went away and it was allowed to spread through the squad and with younger players.

Regardless of thoughts on a coach, the club should never allow players to dictate to them, as they have done once again. In the end they eventually got it right with these other players, after years of poor attitude and worse performances on the pitch, but they missed the early warning signs and didn't show any sort of authority over these players when they had the chance. I think it all ties together with what Butt is talking about. The club seemingly has no backbone and won't stand up to players without a coach having to do it first. Even with Greenwood they seemingly wanted to keep him around until the noise became too much. Thankfully fans and media forced their hands. All the club seems to care about is not losing talented players or not receiving their fully realised market value, rather than setting standards on behaviour and conduct.

This makes no sense. And do you think Amorim chose to pick on these players?

Rashford's poor behaviour/attitude goes back a number of years. ETH had issues, and his attitude was really pathetic at times under Ole. The club and fans are just way too slow to pick up on these things, but there is a reason the likes of him and Garnacho now play football elsewhere, when they were still good enough to be in our squad.

Wow! That’s some serious projecting.

I saw a player completely frozen out by an absolutely god awful manager myself. The difference between Mourinho and Amorim couldn’t be much be more stark, Mourinho was one of the most successful managers on the planet.

So you know better than the players about Mainoo and Rashford. Got it.

Seems like you’ve decided Mainoo is ‘trouble’ just based on some kind of gut feeling?

Often how it goes, axes to grind largely based on not much but 'vibes'

Funny though how the opinion of the worst manager in modern United history supersedes everybody elses at the club who's worked with said player

I agree but then if the environment allows that behaviour then there will always be players who abuse it, same as any work place, does not mean that in the correct environment their behaviour would not be much better. When Rashford was dumped it was at a time when the team and the environment was seriously dysfunctional, and yet at both Villa and Barca he has gone on to be a very productive player, why? is that due to the environment? the times we had Mourinho and Ole, and the team environment was stable Rashford was one of the best players in the team if not the league, I think we can be too quick to write off a player as a bad egg. We are supposedly looking at Aurélien Tchouaméni in the summer who has just punched his captain bad egg?

Thing with Rashford, it is galling to think Barca will get him for peanuts, or any other team would TBH, he clearly is a brilliant footballer at times, I would risk having him back but his wages are a bigger issue than his attitude IMO, attitude can always be corrected and he can be marginalised again if noting changes.

Next season we are going to need many more players, we cannot buy a player of Rashford's qualities for the same price we will sell him for, and this season we could have used a left winger/2nd striker, the issue is which Rashford you get, because if you get the good one even if inconsistent he is very much worth having and we will be lucky to find anyone better in those positions without spending big money.

Rashford needed to go when he went, no doubt, will he come back or should he come back I would also say no, but I can see why he could come back and would not want to write him off if he does before he has even kicked a ball.

When I look back at his United career, from the start, he has never been what you would call a season-to-season consistent producer, often having prolonged drops in his form from one year to the next. Ultimately, his attitude dropped when he could have dug deep and turned into a United legend.

Here is a brief rundown of his stats (PL, then LaLiga)

2015/16: 11 apps, 5 goals, 2 assists
2016/17: 32 apps, 5 goals, 2 assists
2017/18: 35 apps, 7 goals, 5 assists
2018/19: 33 apps, 10 goals, 7 assists
2019/20: 31 apps, 17 goals, 9 assists
2020/21: 37 apps, 11 goals, 13 assists
2021/22: 25 apps, 4 goals, 2 assists
2022/23: 35 apps, 17 goals, 6 assists
2023/24: 33 apps, 7 goals, 3 assists
2024/25: 15 apps, 4 goals, 1 assist (UNITED)
2024/25: 10 apps, 2 goals, 3 assists (VILLA)
2025/26: 30 apps, 8 goals, 9 assists (BARCA)*

* Denotes current season in Spain

Totals - league appearances 327, goals 97 & 62 assists

United should get the agreed fee from Barcelona, it would be fair all around and I suppose that everybody would be satisfied with that outcome. A reduction in salary - albeit still to a very high wage - and his choice of club, city / environment, should keep the player quiet for a while at least. United need him off the books and the money going in other areas.

People just hold unto their beliefs regardless of whatever happens. Like you say, how come the Barcelona team don't want him out? A team of winners don't seem to me like a bunch to accept this "toxic" Rashford often talked about in here.

A lot of fans keep saying he wanted out but my recollection was that his time was up, the club and fans wanted a separation, and he went along with it. None of us actually know how he feels about it or what motivated what.... although rumours often go unchallenged on here (like did he actually say he only wanted Barca for example?)
Those fans tend to hold their view regardless, and like to reiterate it ad infinitum.

Hopefully he gets his move and we get to truly move on from this, both happy, both content..... Hopefully.

You can still like someone despite them being a bad influence at work. Garnacho was clearly a little prick, Rashford just has the wrong mentality.

He's a bad apple in the sense that he sets the wrong standards in regards to his professionalism and on the pitch effort.

If you're building a high workrate team that will run through walls for success you don't hang on to low effort employees. If you're already a top team it's easier to carry such players.

Nothing to add there really. I think you hit the nail on the head. Every team has roleplayers who skate by through some extra cloud based on experience or history and/or the bit of extra natural ability to "do the job". That doesn't mean they re a bad influence, they re just not a positive influence if you need to move into a new stage. I would also argue it might be easier to find some extra motivation to stay with a club like Barça than us, whether its for more guaranteed success, or just living under the Spanish sun. That's why I appreciate the hell out of players like Bruno.

I dont think anyone can argue with you here, the only caveat i'd give is that the whole Utd hierarchy had the wrong mentality and the standards across the club were poor. Under the right setup he's clearly a top player and on his day is unstoppable.

I wouldnt go back with him as i think its best for both him and the club to move on, but i dont think its as simple as just him being a bad apple with poor mentality, its much broader imo.
