Marcus Rashford - Barcelona Watch | Athletic: Progress made for permanent deal

Have you watched much of either? Just for reference is this is how we judge players now purely on goals, nothing else? Oh and only in the league too, CL goals don't count, assists don't count, cup games goals don't count.

I'm not sure bringing someone's overall game into the conversation helps Rashford though. He is goals and his contributions largely end there.

He's definitely better than Antony but he still looks the same player whenever I watch the odd Barca game. It makes me appreciate our team of actual hard workers even more.

There's only like 5 players in Europe with more assists than him this season.

You're not wrong. I was just wondering if this is how we're judging players now 5 beats 4 so he's the better player or having the better season. If so Arsenal have a player called OG and he's giving Amad a run for his money this season.

Seems this thread has a large amount of people who don't actually watch the games but give their opinions on players. And that's not me saying bring him back because where we are now it would be stupid to do so. Amad, Cunha, Mbeumo and Dorgu are a really solid base to build off of.

Still out of his 8 league assists only 3 are from open play. He's not even top 10 in la liga for chance creation per 90, whilst playing for Barca who thump teams given the variances in quality.

I'm not buying he's back to his best or even near, it doesn't pass the eye test and the stats don't suggest it either. Given his effort he'd need to be levels above this to consider bringing him back.

"Not even in the top 10 for chances created this season" is a harsh way of saying he's 13th despite having drastically less minutes than everyone above him apart from Pedri.

He's played well for most of the season and Barca fans seem to mostly agree.

I don't think there is any point in worrying about bringing him back considering he doesn't want to play for Man Utd.

Rashford is a good footballer though.

Yea bloody shame so many people don't realize that a goal contribution every 90 and leading the side in goal involvements in the CL this season for a rotational player isn't actually a sign of being any good!

/s
He was playing regularly for most of the first half of the season due to injuries to their entire frontline so this is a really disingenuous comment.

He’s been the same inconsistent player as always only he’s been playing in a much better attacking side in a far worse league. Maybe working slightly harder for Barca which should rightly wind up United fans tbf.

The absolute dearth of reasonable opinions in this thread is weird.

He’s got 4 league goals in 20 appearances.
Antony has 5 in 17 appearances. Tells you everything you need to know. Antony who was massively out of his depth in the prem is out performing Rashford in the same league playing for a team which is significantly weaker than Rashford’s. The reach by some of you fans to raise Rashford to a level he’s clearly not at is funny.
How many minutes does he have compared to Antony?
Hes got a goal every 90 minutes so your 20 appearances is absolute bullshit of a stat. And I’m guessing you know that or you’re just daft enough to think appearances means something. It someone has 20 appearances and they only have a minute each appearance is 4 goals bad?
You do realize he is scoring in the champions league right?

I'd take him back as a rotational piece at LW/ST. His wages are atrocious, but it takes away most of our need for an extra winger down the left side and he's better than Zirkzee up top.

But it all hinges on who will be our manager next season.

If Rashford goes 5 games in a row in Barcelona without seeing the pitch, nobody gives a feck

If Rashford misses one match in Manchester, all the media talk about for the next week is Rashford, Rashford, Rashford

Much easier to score in the champions league when the teams are open and give you space and you have 60% of the ball. Much harder to break premier league defense when you have the ball 40% of the time, you are expected to track back and track the opposition runners and then quickly counter.

Also much difficult to score of a couple of chance you get the whole game against the teams in the league.

Rashford is an average premier league player who can shine in the odd season, odd games. Now that the defenders in the league have figured him out, he isn't all that.

Once he loses his pace, his game is gone. Spain and Italy will suit him fine if he plays with the top teams there. If he was such an amazing player, he would be a natural starter for Barcelona. His game time just shows that he has better players above him and didn't deserve the 300k salary United paid for him to be the top man.

Except for all the assists, I guess.

Wasn't that one of the main issues people had with him though that he just relied on the counter. If anything you've got that wrong way round Rashford would thrive in a counter attacking team. Also when he played a Prem team this year he scored twice.

Genuinely don't understand that part.

Hard to argue pace is a big factor in his game but I think that goes for most prem wingers/players outside of a select few. Also it's not like he's being kept out of the team by bums, his competition is a Ballon d'or contender. Also agree he didn't deserve 300k p/w but the wage structure was ruined way before that, we gave Sancho 300k p/w, Mount over 200k p/w, Case 350k p/w, Varane similar. Unfortunately at the time his contract was in line with are biggest earners, Ineos have at least done well in that regard getting quality players for relatively fair p/w fee's.

When a Spanish said there's meat on that empanada, you better check it.

Don't we read that every couple of weeks? It seems they've 'decided' to buy him about 8 times since he joined on loan. It's a nothing source trying to generate content by pretending a nothing article is a news story.

'Plan to'

It's like treating every rumour where a club is alleged to be 'preparing bid' as breaking news.

'Breaking news - club considers preparing to think about planning discussions around possibility of readying a bit for someone'

OMG THAT'S HUGE!

It's neither news, nor is anything breaking.

30m plus 30m saved in wages should cover a new left winger on a more reasonable salary.

Not a bad outcome compared to the alternative which could have been us having to pay half his wages while he played out his contract elsewhere. Which could have happened quite easily.

Meh. Chelsea wanted to buy Sancho too. Let's see if he accepts the contract they offer him. Will get excited then.

Article says it won't be activated until June.

Also says they wanted to negotiate the fee and possibly even attempt another loan. However, Deco is worried they won't attract anyone else for a similar price and that we won't budge further, and Rashford has also, allegedly, agreed to a wage cut.

Looks a decent deal for all involved.

Hmm. Fair enough. Would be good start to to the summer if it happens.

Win win, more good news, put a bow on it and lets wrap this up!

The nerds over at r/barca have the journo whose story this is listed as 'Tier 4 - very unreliable'.

There is a severe lack of quotes in the article.

They've basically outlined how and why the deal might go ahead and presented it as fact.

It does begin with "won't be activated until June", so they're covering their bases and just say "plans changed" if it doesn't happen.

It's sport

Next they'll mention how Rashford wants to play for them so bad he agreed to PAY Barcelona 15m a year in wages

There are way too many who can’t see reason or middle ground with him. Both sides. I’m glad he’s doing well and I hope he earns that permanent move (pay up Barca). Wage is going to be a sticky point of course. But to put the stats into a bit of context, didn’t Ferran also have a crazy good season last year - like a goal involvement every 80 mins or less? I think Flicks Barca is just very attacking so they all generate very good numbers. Not to detract from Rashford though - sometimes a clean break is just best for all parties. I hope he’s at the World Cup and does well there as well.

Had a decisive role in Lewandowski's opener today, but without Raphinha (and Pedri, needs to be added) Barca remain half the team they can be.
Still with the number of games and Barca's usual rate of injuries he will get his share of games, at least under Flick, who rates him and whose system is any attacking player's best friend.

I see so many similarities in this thread and the Mainoo one. The hate and anger, the perception of them as a person as being an individual with ‘attitude’. The hyperbole over their personal lives and bad performances vs downplaying good ones.

There’re other trends but I honestly can’t be bothered to list them as I don’t think they will be considered as some people seem unwilling to consider changing opinions.

Glad Mainoo still here and hope for the best outcome for Marcus and the club.

Is it the most obvious thing in the world to predict that broke Barcelona are just going to try to loan Rashford for another season without paying to sign him permanently?

I havent watched enough Barca games to make a proper judgement but from what I read his numbers look decent (10 goals, 13 assists). With their ongoing financial juggling, are they actually gonna sign him permanently? Honestly, I just dont want another summer saga if he returns. We have been through this cycle too many times. The will-he wont-he leaves drama, the questions about attitude, the distraction during pre season. If Barca wants him and he wants to stay there, lets just get it done quickly. £26m pure profit on our books and everyone moves on.

I doubt anyone has compared the Rashford situation with Mainoo. The latter has remained professional at all times and the former didn’t

The similarities I pointed out were in how posters were expressing themselves in relation to 2 academy products with similar stories rather than the actions of the individuals. I believe reaction to both at times were overly negative and without enough context.

Don’t agree. Rashford supplied plenty of context making it known that he wanted out, through his words and actions.

Mainoo on the other hand was being questioned whether he fit into Amorims system. He always remained professional bap the question about suitability divided fans.
