Marcus Rashford | to redeem or not?

He's been the best forward on our books for years now so that's not surprising. Present players included.
That's always been a big issue for me. Rashford absolutely has the quality to play a big part in a title winning squad but he can't be your go to guy season after season. The fact that throughout all his time here we were unable to buy even good forwards who can share the load with him is laughable. If it wasn't veterans like Ronaldo or Cavani who were certainly good enough but had just 1 or 2 yrs left at the top level, it was a long list of flops or average players. Højlund, Antony, Sancho, Zirkzee, Weghorst, Dan James etc. Just look at that. Terrible.

Finding a new left winger who can come in and hit the ground running like he did at Barcelona won't be easy. The few who are at least as good as him at the peak of his powers (the Vinicius, Kvaratsheklia, Diaz, Raphinha, Dembele tier) are unattainable for us. I think the club will gamble with a young left winger and hope that Cunha and Dorgu can rotate there. That's already a huge problem because that's a long way from being good enough and i don't think we're ready to really invest in a top level winger this summer.

The funny thing is, that if he played like this in the pl this season and someone wanted to buy him he would cost 80+ million €. Absolute mindblowing that now you guys have to hope to even get that small amount in question.
Blows my mind, really.
He hasn't played anywhere near and €80m player. No matter what league he's in. Hes had a few really good goals/moments though.

10 players going for incredible fees to or within the pl:
  • Alexander Isak (Newcastle to Liverpool, 2025/26): ~€145m-€150m
  • Florian Wirtz (Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool, 2025/26): ~€125m-€130m (inc. add-ons)
  • Enzo Fernández (Benfica to Chelsea, 2023): €121m
  • Jack Grealish (Aston Villa to Man City, 2021): €117.5m
  • Declan Rice (West Ham to Arsenal, 2023): €116.6m
  • Moisés Caicedo (Brighton to Chelsea, 2023): €116m
  • Romelu Lukaku (Inter to Chelsea, 2021): €113m
  • Hugo Ekitiké (PSG to Liverpool, 2025/26): ~€95m
  • Paul Pogba (Juventus to Man Utd, 2016): €105m
  • Antony (Ajax to Man Utd, 2022): ~€95m-€100

Pretty sure he is not last place in this constellation^^

They’re balking at paying £25m for him.

Poor effort.
They're balking at the total package, and it's largely because of their financial situation and the priorities of signing a new CB and CF

Nah. Sometimes things don't work out. He was on the market for two straight windows and the only offers United got were loans

He's 29 and on colossal wages, and the club who owns his playing rights wants him gone

Maybe I exaggerated a bit to make my point. But honestly even with huge wages, you will get no better player for a similar price. Not even close.
Attitude might be a problem, but haven´t seen any problems in Barcelona at all.

I am not saying hes suddenly top 3 world or something, but if you check the wingers in the pl right today, you wont find many.....

Browsing online the general take from
Barca fans is 'Thanks but no thanks'.

They're happy with what he's achieved but they seem to have strong issues with his questionable workrate and overall technical ability in possession.

I would be surprised if Rashford makes a permanent move to Barca. I think he'll have to lower his wages and United would have to lower the fee they've put on his head too.

Still, he's certainly done enough to get a good move elsewhere. Providing he's open to one.

29 years old at the end of the year on massive wages, and club doesn't want him. He was coming off a mediocre season and a half for United before the loans started

There was never really a question over his general ability. He was always capable of producing great moments and he has the tools to be a great asset for any club.

His problem is that he struggles to put his talents to his use consistently enough. Then when you factor in issues with work rate, it's difficult to build a top team with him as an automatic starter. So he's best used as a squad player. And there's very few clubs willing to spend that kind of money and those kind of wages on a squad player.

Has this been the loan spell Rash needed in 2016/17? Think he comes back a better player, but I don't know if that ship has sailed.

Other peoples mistakes in transfers doesn't mean rashford is worth 80m

He's 50m at most

That’s the bottom line, unfortunately. We’ve painted ourselves into a corner by giving the guy the sort of contract a club should reserve for players you can build a team around. And he’s far too many flaws to be given that status.

I’m fairly sure a lot of his problems with United were down to off field issues. So a move away from those distractions is obviously the best thing for his career. This season is probably the best version of Rashford. Will it be enough to get a starting place at an elite club? I doubt it.

That's cute. We only want them to pay what was agreed. 30m is nothing these days.

We have to look at the optics as well. If we give in to rashford and barca and reduce the 30m fee then we'll look weak as hell

It's two fold, we give in to barcas demands, we look weak to all other clubs and will hamper our negotiations for both buying and selling

If we stay strong with barca and rashford forces it and we the cave to the lower fee then our players will see that if a club comes in for them they just need replicate what rashford has done which means we our have submitted to player power, something the club has tried to eradicate in the last few seasons.

We need to stand strong and if that means rashford playing in the reserves for the rest of his contract, then so be it.

United need to show a back bone and tell the world, club or player, we will not be bullied by anyone.

It's kind of sad that this squad is crying out for a left-sided forward, and yet it seems obvious that bringing back Rashford would be a mistake. Not great how it turned out for one of the best players coming out of the academy in recent years.

Hope for all involved that Barca are able/willing to fork out that transfer fee. Its frustrating to have these players out on loan instead of getting some closure.

We really shouldn't budge on the fee. €30m is more than fair for a player like Rashford, and Barca can easily afford it if they really want him. If wages are an issue then Rashford should be willing to go down a bit to get his dream move.

What choice do you think we have really?

Do you think any club is gonna match his wages? I don’t.

I think he likely will only lower his wage demands for a permanent move to Barcelona.

I don’t see us in a good bargaining position at all. Barca will eventually get him on under 200 k /week and for something like 15m euro. Are we really going to pretend to Rashford and Barca that we’re prepared to take him and his 300k /week back? Not a chance budget cut Jim will be having any of that.

Pretty conclusively No to that. He's good enough to play an important role off the bench, not good enough to be a starter

If it isn't Barcelona, ideally he should try to get a move to Bayern or PSG. Not sure how well he'd do in Italy at a big club, wouldn't be manchester but he'd likely be signed to be a starter so scrutiny and expectations wouldn't be far off. That said Serie A might suit him though. Malen looks like Ronaldo just by being able to run pretty fast

Doesn't work like that though does it. Nobody would or should be paying anywhere near 80m for Rashford.

Italy is on the cards if the Barcelona move doesn't happen.

Yes, Rashford's behaviour after Ten Hag's first season was poor, with a couple of incidents that were genuinely indefensible. But it's also fair to say we let Amorim weaken our position with him completely by just bombing him out of the squad.

Now the club is stuck. If Carrick gets the job, he'd probably be banking on reintegrating Rashford; they've got a previous relationship, the squad is generally fond of him, and it wouldn't be a hard sell in the dressing room. The problem is the senior management team. They backed Amorim publicly throughout that whole saga, so walking it back now would mean openly admitting they got it wrong again, and I don't think they're willing to do that.

I just don’t see a chance in hell that Jim would accept his wages.
He’s finally getting Cas off his wage budget, he’s not gonna add 300k /week back on.
So even if Carrick wanted it, I’ll 99% certain Jim will ensure it’s a huge no from them.

Dare I say this, he's got it good at the moment. A bit of a less physical league, less limelight to contend with and winning trophies, so why would he want to come back to all the extra stress?

No matter who the manager is, it's best for all parties to move on and not have those kind of distractions.

Well I'm happy for him. Fantastic goal in El Classico that wins them the title. Well done. Was not biggest fan of him and his workrate but given some of the other characters we've had to deal with before and after, he's far from worst.

Happy for him, he needed to get away and we needed to get rid, hope he gets perm transfer now.

Good for him. happy he's doing well.. Great free kick in El Classico.

Barca just cough up the 30m, your getting a bargain there at that price

I don't think anyone disagrees with this. The problem is that still relies on Barca being willing to offer a fee we are happy with and wages that Rashford is happy with. That's the only obstacle here.

Should have included a clause, win the league buy Rashford

Why would Barca needlessly have accepted the clause? I'm sure we would have preferred an obligation clause and we probably did table it, but our position was weaker than theirs.

I wonder if Bayern would consider him. If they’re looking at Gordon, then surely he’s on their minds. Obviously different stratosphere of wages, but for the fees i’ve seen touted for Gordon, the overall financial package may not be that different.

If he has his sights on the CL, I reckon they’re a better bet.

Great goal. Can’t help but think he’d be class if he came back here again, but we all know what he can be like too. Will need to consider a very similar winger for squad depth anyway

Bayern want Gordon for the same reason they bought Diaz, the same reason they bought Mane, they are as good off the ball as they are on it. Gordon is a limited player (much more so than Diaz is and Mane was) but he will diligently track his runner for 90mins and test them the other way in return, usually resulting in getting some joy given his workrate is so high. He is a nightmare for a coach who wants to push a FB on because the risk/reward isn't there. Rashford is just not that player.

He's on 350K and has zero work rate. We don't need similar and he'd be awful here. Also would create an imbalance in the dressing room when the laziest player is the best paid player.

Mhm, this is true.

We'll see how it plays out, but I think he's done enough for us to get him off our books to someone. I have a feeling he won't want to lose the career momentum he's built, so will compromise on wages wherever he ends up.

Think he'll either end up back here or in serie A, he'd be a shining light for any of the top clubs in Italy.

If Milan really were to sell Leao he'd be an ideal replacement for them.
