I never actually followed the story at the time but I assume you are talking about the trip to Belfast?

Was it actually a bender or a few drinks in a nightclub?

A bender for me is Jack Graelish territory, getting filmed blacked out drunk in the middle of the afternoon.

At one point Emery was benching Watkins for him, he's definitely not 1st choice for Barca but he's on the plane for what he's done at them 2 clubs. Tuchel's clearly not picked on status or else Palmer and Foden would be on the plane too.

Think he played 1 full, 90min game for them across European and League games. Started less than half their league games.

Either way neither club has fully trusted in him really.

Both used him in a similar fashion really and I think England will.

It's worked out in terms of getting him on the plane but I don't think that's down to the two clubs or managers. They both used him sparingly.

If you’d told me a year ago he’d be off to the World Cup while Palmer and Foden would be staying home I’d have definitely been shocked. Fair play to him though. That being said I wasn’t overly impressed with his statement which definitely did have bitter undertones.

Would love anyone to explain exactly how he was supposed to thank United for the last 18 months in getting him to the world Cup

We'll have to wait for his inevitable book and media tour in 5 or 6 years to explain what on earth happened at United for a local boy to absolutely withdraw all effort for his last couple of seasons here.

He's well known to have top tier PR, but even they'll do amazingly, even with years to think about it, to word it in a way that has people feeling sympathy for him.

They dropped their leading goal scorer for their biggest European game in god knows how long, pretty safe to say Emery at least trusted him. Think the lack of game time at Villa was down to he was lacking match fitness at the start of the loan and he picked up a injury towards the end that ruled him out for a few games.

Barca it's a different story he's brought in as a back up and he did play his role to good effect, covered when Raphinha was out injured and contributed in a league win and cup win.

If it's not down to Flick and Emery who is it down too? He wasn't getting game time at United, he went to Villa got back into the England team and then went to Barca and got into the WC squad. Seems pretty obvious why he thanked them.

Not many players get a call up and put out a statement like he did. It’s an obvious dig, you’d need to be incredibly naive to think otherwise

I suppose it’s the way of world in some ways now but why wouldn’t he SMS/whatsapp his thanks to those guys? I find it a little hard to believe he, his camp or both didn’t do that for a headline.

It’s another artefact for the circus around him unfortunately.

Maybe Bruno could come out with a statement saying something like:

“I want to thank Rueben Amorim for helping the club get rid of negative and bad attitude players (Rashford & Sancho), shite goalkeepers (Onana), poor strikers (Rasmus) and for Michael Carrick coming to replace the shite football of Amorim and helping us to achieve 3rd place and me to get loads of assists and now awards….”

Wouldn’t say this is necessarily worthy of thanks but there is a counterpoint to this notion the club have only treated him badly and deserve nothing from him. The club have helped him significantly in the last 18months by acknowledging it’s not working and getting him good loans to rediscover his game. They could have insisted he stays where nobody is happy and try to win his place back, they could also have insisted on sale only, but they didn’t, they let him get his dream move to the cheapskates who it seems won’t even spend the low agreed fee to buy him. There is also the small matter of the club developing him for 15yrs, giving him this platform and believing in him and committing to him so much they gave him the astronomical contract. His England debut that set him on the international path was off the back of United development and performances, and his call up now is a culmination of everything, which includes the club.

Anyway, he didn’t and doesn’t need to say any of the above. He’s entitled to thank whoever he pleases and I don’t see a problem with it. I don’t see any problem with him having a sly dig at the club either to be honest if he feels aggrieved, how many times are we told to not bottle up emotions. I personally wouldn’t use social media but such is life.

I hope he performs at the World Cup because the performance of the national team now takes precedence over everything.

It says nothing other than he was motivated to post thanks to the relevant people, just like the fact some are motivated to post criticism doesn't actually speak to them as a person. There could be many reasons for why they do right? Maybe they are generally negative? Bitter over Rashford for reasons? Or maybe they just feel like writing a post they'll forget about in minutes?

It's actually interesting watching people still double down after the 180 he has just done. The majority of Redcafe claimed he was finished at the top level, turns out he's not, and he's shown it, and apparently it hurts them...

Just give credit where it's due and keep it moving, it's all win win as far as I'm concerned...

Yeah he was highly disrespectful to the club and his behaviour/attitude were terrible for a long time. Good riddance to any player that thinks they are bigger than the club.

He has actually been pretty underwhelming for Barcelona considering the wage he is on, playing in a piss poor league, surrounded by superstars.

It’s 2026, players and people use social media for everything.

Elliot Anderson could’ve certainly txt his own fecking mum to tell her they are going to the WC.

Pretty much everyone craves attention.
 
Good on him, thanking the team's and professionals that helped him over the last season and a bit, great to see him being humble enough to thank those that did help him..

When/if he goes I don't know who the cafe and the toxic United 'fans' will use as their scapegoat next....we've had Maguire, McTominay, Garnacho, Rashford, some have tried with Bruno, maybe it'll be Mainoo or Amad.....

Bloody hell. That one passed me by. Had to google. Brutal for him. To keep playing as well as he has over the last few weeks is incredible. Speaks volumes about his strength of character. Will be gutted if he ends up at a different PL club.

If he was up for it, I'd still have him back. Would be perfect in rotation with Sesko, Cunha, Mbuemo. But the instagram post during the week showed he hasn't a notion of coming back to United. I'd have Hojlund back too.

As others have pointed out, he could not train the next day.

But I'd like to focus on the last sentence because while Grealish does seem to love a good bender and people love to bash him for it, he seemingly only does it in the off season. Or at least, he hasn't been caught out drinking when he had to train in the morning. From a club's perspective, Rashford's behaviour is far more problematic than Grealish's, even if there's less alcohol involved. It's deeply unprofessional and disrespectful to miss out on work, because you were out drinking the night before. It shows you either have no control, or do not give a feck any more.

His call-up isn’t a Charlie Bucket finding a golden ticket moment.

I mean in this same cycle Tuchel has dropped high profile, and highly paid, players who made it ahead of him at the last Euros. He wasn't in the England picture anymore prior to his loans
