Marcus Rashford | to redeem or not?

hold on, i thought he said he had to get 2 buses to training

"Player tribune interview" 2 years ago:

"Imagine being 5, 6, 7 years old and taking four different buses across town to get to training at The Cliff. That’s not an exaggeration. Ask my mum. Somebody had to take off work to go with me because nobody had a car in our family. Nobody even had a license. In them early days, it was two buses into town, then we had to walk through the city to get to the other bus out of town to get to Salford. Even in the pouring rain. Nothing really good to eat. Training for hours with my mum sat there waiting for me, not knowing a thing about football, just doing it out of love. Then the same back home. Just to chase my dream of playing for United. And that’s not me moaning. Not at all. I loved every second of it."
I wouldn't be automatically trusting "The Football Tweet". Is that kid even Rashford? And can you find where he talks about getting lifts?

The day after?

Could have been to keep him away from training until the story blew over. No idea though, as I never followed the story.

«I never followed the story, but i’m making up random excuses for him»

I was simply speculating as to a possible reason why he missed training, relax.

Did he not stay in Belfast that night he was drinking here?

He was out getting shitfaced in Belfast the day before training, spent the night in a Belfast hotel and flew home the same day as training on a private jet, in no condition to train. That’s about the gist of it.

Fair enough.

Which circus happened this season?
Amorim's? Also at some point a part of the fanbase turned against youth players for no actual reasons and started making up things about their character but it can go with the Amorim circus.

Controversial opinion, but I hope Carrick can convince him to come back and sign a reduced wage extension. I feel Rashford has unfinished business here.
Nah.

I think he's probably a better player than most of our options, but he's just become too greedy to be better for the team.

Like the Diallo assist, chances are he'd have shot instead of crossing it for Mbuemo.
Actually, it wouldn't have gotten that far, he wouldn't have passed it back to Mount in the first place!

All the evidence is the hierarchy at Utd don't want him at the club and looking at his social media, he knows that... He's available for €30m and probably finds clubs who will pay that, or worse case scenario another loan with a fee and his wages off your books.

Not really, I’m a huge fan too and he’s 28 now and he’s matured during spells at Villa and Barcelona.

We know he’s not going to work like other players do at pressing and defensive tasks but he also solves the back up number 9 position too, so why not bring him back, if Barcelona don’t pay £26m call their bluff and bring him back.

Amorim basically fell out with him from week three and ran him out of the squad, had he kept him he might of won the Europa League and still be in a job now so thank God he said that he would rather have his 57 year old Goal keeping coach on the bench.

Personally I don’t see us replacing Rashford for £25m that we hope to get and if he scores 15-20 PL goals next season and scores 10 CL goals then there’s no issue paying him his £325k per week?

Carrick would definitely love him back, he knows him better than anyone.

This is an interesting opinion when I've seen multiple people critizise Rashford for not shooting enough. Like that goal he scored against Madrid, it was the Barca players who convinced him to shoot it instead of whatever else he planned to do.

why not bring him back
Because we've painstakingly...at considerable financial loss got rid of most of the players in our squad who fall into the category of lazy/egotistical/unprofessional and (fairly or not) bring a media circus to every game.

Amorim rightfully deserved some criticism because of his stubbornness. But nothing happened under Carrick.

So they’re broke for Rashford but seem to be moving quite aggressively for Gordon?

He has unfinished business at every club he pays for. The business of working hard for his team when not in possession. That’s why Barcelona (and every other club) aren’t biting our hands off to sign him for £30m. Which is peanuts for a player who’s been as productive, on the ball, as he has this season.

They just don't rate him that highly to sign him permanently , they would chance their Luck to get him on subsidised loan again if it happens thats great otherwise its not a Big deal for them .

Rashy is better than Gordon on almost all metrics, and don't think Gordon would be much cheaper in transfer wee. Maybe he has lower wages. I don't really mind whatever situation.

If not Barcelona another club will pick him, if not for his wages I'd take him back under Carrick too. On the other side, Mount is also getting paid disproportionately and that doesn't seem to huge of a problem either.

But “metrics” are bullshit and always have been. Fans up until 5 minutes ago understood that. These days we just cherry pick stats call them “metrics” and pretend bang average players are ballers.

Just read the praise Garnacho got in his thread for “87% passing accuracy”. All these metrics are completely meaningless. Zirkzee’s goals per minute metric makes him a top player

Fortunately clubs still make decisions on players based on extensive scouting and watching them play over a period of time - and don’t google their metrics. Honestly had it up to here with stats and metrics. Like judging the quality of a book by citing number of words. “Great story, solid forty-thousander. Long words on most pages. Solid number of chapters. Great metrics”

It misses the point and it seems to have been invented as an excuse to not watch players and form an actual opinion. Player could stand on side and not pass to anyone not standing right next to him and the inevitable “accuracy” percentage of that contribution will have people insisting until they’re blue in the face that stat means sod all.

The fact they’d take Gordon over Rashford and find money for him only surprises those that view the game as a series of metrics

Whether Metrics, or eye-test, or output, or stats. Rashford has been levels above Gordon in the last 1.5 seasons.

Nonsense. There’s a reason why Barcelona aren’t stumping up cash for him. There’s a reason Villa didn’t. There’s a reason we wanted him out.

There’s a reason Newcastle want to keep Gordon and a reason why other clubs will want to take him - and pay much more than what Rashford will eventually go for - if he goes at all.

And that reason isn’t because those clubs have forgot to look up the stats. Clubs observe players over a long period of time and make their decisions. Alien today when we have to say things like “5 in 12” and “84%” to make an argument

People think scouts sit there and tally up aerial balls won % on because they’re too old to ask Google. Why waste airfare when you can see he’s a 17 on shot strength on football manager

Seems like you don't understand metrics. All the stats you quoted adequately explain their exact situations and that's all they do.

If your analysis is good metric = all round excellent player that's a you issue. They only aggregate events you see with your eyes.

Rashford is a bigger goal threat and has better passing than Gordon. Gordon however is clearly the better dribbler, largely because Rashford runs likes he's on a fixed track.

Rashford is not a good team player, so it doesn't matter, any way. One of the worst work rates/defensive ability for an attacking player you will find across the top 5 leagues.

And the stats (excluding assists) show they're quite close, actually, and in Champions League, then Gordon is outperforming him, assists (again) excluded. Despite playing for a significantly weaker team.

Big deal. There are loads of kids all over the country who did all that but didn't make it to be pros.

He wants to talk about hardships, there are regular people working normal jobs with salaries that are barely enough who put in more effort in their jobs than Rashford had at time out on the pitch for us at times.

You are handicapping your own argument.

"Hojlund is as good as a forward as Ronaldo, if you exclude goals and assists. Look at how often he wrestles defenders."

For your information, of the 10 goals Gordon scored in the CL, 5 were penalties.
3 penalties out of his 6 league goals this season.

It's no comparison really, I will definitely give you that he has better work-rate than Rashford.

Well, I didn't say goals and assists, did I? I said assists. And being a forward isn't just about G+A. Dribbling, link-up, movement, overlaps, work rate and more. I'm not even advocating for Gordon being a top player, but I think it's ridiculously obvious why a team prefers Gordon over Rashford. It's not just about individual ability.

Fair, they are still goals he scored.

You’re suggesting clubs sign players based on more than looking at that table at the bottom of their Wikipedia page? Madness!

And this shows that you are not really meaning to discuss.. you were mentioning output before and then take a player that has taken an obscene number of penalties to a player that took none.

Rashford's output, for you I should then specify (without penalties), is in a completely different stratosphere to Gordon's for a good 1.5 years.

Wouldn't say Gordon is a better dribbler, link-up player or has better movement at all. He plays for a more counter attacking side, where he has much more space to work with than Rashford. Rashford does play with better team mates than Gordon does but in more congested spaces, in a slower league.

However even during the 24/25 season (both for United and Villa) he was outperforming Gordon in all competitions. This time, with or without penalties and with Gordon playing 1300 minutes more. It is no comparison really, Gordon is levels below.

Completely different stratosphere? What the hell are you talking about  You're talking like Rashford has Salah like numbers in the last 1.5 years

Rashford has 5 PL goals and 3 assists in the 24/25 season, 8 goals and 7 assists for Barcelona in the 25/26 season

Gordon has 5 goals and 5 assists in the 24/25 season, 3 goals and 2 assists for Newcastle in the 25/26 season.

Penalties excluded for both; So 23 goals and assists for Rashford and 15 for Gordon, Rashford having played in a significantly weaker league where Antony thrives. Then there is Champions League this year; Gordon has 5 goals and 2 assists, Rashford has 5 goals and 3 assists. Quite unbelievable that you're actually trying to make it sound like it's easier for Gordon to get better numbers too. Rashford plays for Barcelona in La Liga ffs

Can you show me the stratospheric difference in output?

If you want to glaze over Rashford, be my guest. All of us have seen his performances. There is a reason why Villa don't want him, we don't want him and Barcelona don't want him despite being available for €30m and him willing to take a paycut.

Gordon is obviously not a better footballer than Rashford. Works harder? Sure. But at all of the other actual footbally stuff, Rashford is a comfortably better player.

If you blatantly lie, you can make up a bunch of reasons sure.

24/25
Rashford has 20g/a in 2440 minutes (0.74 g/a per 90) vs Gordon has 15g/a in 2910 minutes (0,46 g/a per 90). This includes penalties, Rashford one penalty, Gordon 3 penalties.

25/26
Rashford has 25 g/a in 2387 minutes (0.94 g/a per 90) vs Gordon has 19 g/a in 2776 minutes (0,62 g/a per 90). This includes penalties, Rashfrod 0 penalties, Gordon 8 penalties.

That is different stratosphere. Without penalties the picture becomes even much clearer. Sure Rashford being a sub also favours him, but he is much more productive than Gordon.

That Salah comment was dumb and unneccessary, fact of the matter however is that Rashford has generally been held to a much higher standard than other players. I don't even want to try and argue he is world class, he is clearly not on Raphinha or Yamal's level, and would be a good squad player for Barcelona unless they can find even better. The even better however is not Gordon.

If they go for Gordon, it will likely be because it makes more financial sense for them, or they just want to scare United that they have more options.

Genuinely insane, I know a lot of people (and especially here on Redcafe) dislike Rashford but lets be guided here.
