Marcus Rashford | to redeem or not?

Surely he’s got to realise that he’s 40mil and no one wants him, teams aren’t clambering for him and he’s cheap, in today’s market.

Barca could have got him for 27mil and worked with him last year.. chose not too, surely that tells him something?

Hopefully it’s a kick up the backside for him and not a massive confidence kick, the fans are generally not on side so he has some grovelling to do,

If he is not sold, let’s see if he has it in him.

"Okie dokie, I'll go and have fun in the reserves."

We are then left paying his wages and with very little backup in attack. Press stories every week about him also.
If we purely go by numbers, we have two left-sided attackers in Cunha and Dorgu, two right-sided attackers in Amad and Mbeumo, and similarly two centre-forwards in Sesko and Zirkzee, with Lacey and the new guy signed from Spurs as further backups. Sure, there is a question of quality, but why would you want to disrupt the team that was built on certain values by bringing back someone who was deemed not good enough for the same?

Further, does he want to rot in the reserves and give up on a career that could potentially bring him much more financially over the years for few extra millions for next two years?

We have 3 attacking players who we can rely on for over 10 goals. If we can't sign someone to add a fourth then yes.

Rashford didn't disrupt the England camp, didn't disrupt the Barca camp, didn't disrupt the Villa camp.

Ironic that the only place he was massively disruptive was at the most dysfunctional big club on the planet. I don't believe he is blameless but neither is the club. But yes if we decide we are going to treat him like a commodity to throw away then he very well might turn around say he's quite happy to sit in the reserves and collect our money.

The idea that we have all the power in this situation is what's brought us to this point.

He’s never shown any inclination to fight outside of small, perfunctory bursts. Honestly, ever since the publicity over his free school meals campaign he’s been absolutely insufferable on the pitch.

When you look at Ferguson’s endeavours to keep the feet of young players on the ground during his tenure, Rashford is exactly what can happen when you don’t. He was at award ceremonies, winning adulation, becoming the nation’s sweetheart. You could tell how much it pissed him off having to go onto the pitch each week and work hard. So he didn’t. He wasn’t even folding it in he just…stopped.

Young player, who gets far too much adulation far too soon, big paycheques, too many distractions away from football too early, surrounded by the wrong people. That is how you get someone going from £250,000 a week and one of the most promising young stars in European football to someone that absolutely nobody wants to touch. What is more impressive than this, I think, is the whole PR industry that many people even on this board seem to buy into where we have to pretend all of this is representative of a career that’s gone brilliantly

Could someone just quickly list Rashford's journey from hero to villain. I have more of an understanding of the dislike aimed at Sancho and Garnacho. Obviously I'm just uninformed here! So see it as a case of educating me.

What I know is that Rashford is on huge wages, has attitude problems and said he wants/wanted to play for Barca. What else?

Lot of puff PR pieces, coupled with lack of effort visibly on the pitch (potentially also driven by having to play with dross that ETH got), and then Amorim identifying him publicly as a problem for the squad.

Laziest player I've seen at united.

Would be for anyone that was once tagged a wunderkind. And that's why odds are that this doesn't go very well for us or for him. Feel a bit bad for him tbh

Strange if true that there are PL clubs we wouldn't sell him to.

It's an odd strategy to refuse to weaken your rivals.

Was amazingly good at a very early age. Was felt by many to not get the chances he deserved by Mourinho. Became a key player under OGS, where he enjoyed a couple of very good seasons, tempered with some injury trouble. Something of a national hero due to his charity work. Then had a career year under EtH and got rewarded with a long-term contract on superstar wages. Declined markedly the next season, and then even more the one after, to the extent that Amorim publicly froze him out and he got loaned to Aston Villa mid-season. By that time there had also been several disciplinary instances, showing up late, partying after losing at home to City etc etc. By that point, even his most ardent defenders had fallen silent on this forum. Very few was sad to see him go.

As a player, he's really much the same as he was when he broke through - runs in behind, runs at defenders, cuts in and finishes. The issue is he's mostly not good enough at that to get by on it alone, and he hasn't diversified and developed. At the age he's reached now, he probably isn't going to either. Also there's not enough offensive impact to justify his Mbappe-like defensive effort. When you also bring attitude problems to the training ground and dressing room, this is not a great package.

For my part I stuck with him longer than most, but in the end you just have to face reality. I now hope he doesn't reappear in the squad. I'd rather we paid him to sit at home.

The smart money is no-one seems to be interested, we vaguely come round to the idea maybe he'll realise time is short and he might as well make the best of it here - with both sides talking the right PR.

A couple of decent sub appearances.

Then off on loan to Valencia or Inter Milan or someone late August.

He built and made the bed he’s laying in. His effort levels and commitment have let him down. Could have easily addressed this. Chose not to. Now he’s 28 and should be at peak of his powers and in terms of how in demand he is yet it’s more aligned with a 35 year old scouring for a new club.

Even if we could get £40m that’s pure profit plus his massive £300k+ wages off the books for the next 2 years would be huge for us.

There is only one destination if that prophecy is going to be fulfilled. If he has the slightest bit of pride, that is not going to happen.

Barcelona just signed a third winger today. I wonder how that makes Rashford feel?

I hope he gets to play football and enjoy it, wherever that might be.

Quite a few... in December 24 he said he is ready for a new challenge, clearly not United.

Mainly, on the pitch, he did not try hard enough for the team and his team mates. There are plenty of examples of him not trying, tracking or caring.

So a mix of attitude problems, wage, not giving his all to the team.

I think players can have high wages and attitude problem but fans are forgiving if the player is giving his all on the pitch, Garnacho was supported by match going fans till the end.

I wouldn't be surprised if he comes on as a sub that he is boo'ed at OT.

Would be interesting to see the reaction if Shea Lacey loses his bench spot for Rashford. I suspect OT would not like that at all.

I'm ambivalent towards Rashford. Gave us a few good years but tailed off at the end. I just don't see the point in bringing him back, especially with the media circus that surrounds him.

It's time we moved on.

Never understood why so many discount the idea his problem simply stems from a massive ego. If he had a different background, wasn’t a product of the club, maybe had a different passport, I don’t think there would be any question that this is a player with an exceptionally arrogant attitude. We would not be watching an Italian or a French player with the same level of talent play with the same lack of application, and not come to a consensus that this was a very cocky and conceited player that didn’t think he was responsible for contributing to the work.

Strip everything else we know about the background of the player and his academy credentials. It’s a young player who was given massive adulation and a huge contract, who has largely since taken to the field and phoned in the vast majority of his performances. It is a textbook example of a player losing their focus losing their head and thinking they are much better than they are because of all the adulation and money they received, prematurely.

Writing was on the wall when Ole felt obliged to issue an apology for suggesting that football was the most important thing to focus on, referencing his extracurricular activities outside the game. He basically became what Ferguson was determined to stop the likes of Giggs and Beckham from becoming

A few questions:

A. Who is your most reviled person in history if you had to choose: 1. Fabrizio Romano, 2. Gianni Infantino, 3, Marcus Rashford?

B. Do you like anyone, apart from maybe Jermaine Jenas (and Mason Mount if he’d been healed by Marcus Rashford)?

C. If you were banned from writing about Marcus Rashford for a year - what would you write about?

For me the most frustating part is we refuse to match our competitors on wages and cite a wage structure, then turn around and keep this guy as our highest earner getting 325K. Its either hypocrisy or incompetency. Or maybe both.

What about the rumours of offers from Turkey - a few players have gone there over recent seasons and received high wages - Oshimen Salah etc

Maybe it isn’t a place he wants to go to at 28 as his ego says Barca PSG Bayern but I fear with his low out of possession work rate (which has always been an issue ever since he came into the team) it’s Newcastle , Turkey or a subsidised loan with caveated obligation to buy in Italy

I fear he rejects any offers that are made and ends up on loan (Sancho style) later in the window or worse still in January after a period being in the squad but not getting much game time so he operates as a media focus/circus

Not at all, he was given this contract by the previous regime.

I think the vilification of Rashford is a bit over the top. Yes Amorim at the time saw that Rashford did not work in his system, and him going to the US for NBA was silly, but so did Cas. But Amorim system was based on a high pressure system and going man to man, which exploits Rashford laziness. However, Carrick has us mainly in a zonal 4-4-2 mid block, which suits Rashford a lot better. I know a lot see that high pressure is a modern system, but Carrick far simpler system yielded great results as we take less risk. I think Rashford can get back to his best under that.

Well this regime are the ones keeping him/being unable to get rid of him.

Well there is maybe 6-8 clubs in the world (outside of Arabs/Chinese) who could afford his stupid wages. And none of those clubs is braindead enough to buy him. And of course, as his ego and overall personality is weird, he will rather collect the 325k and sit it out, than tackle a fresh start at another cool CL club for let´s say 180k - cause if he would, he would have plenty opportunities and the transfer fee itself would not be a big problem.

If we can not get rid of him, I think Carrick should try to make it work from the very best, meaning a starter. Get him back to his back, give him confidence. Some early weeks goals and some loving from the crowd could do wonders. Sound silly but a back up role behind Dorgu or whatever will 100% not work for him. Give him the chance at the very beginning, if he does not show the effort and intensitivy we want, he can still drop him for good.

Being unable to sell him isn't down through choice. Giving him away to Barca (especially when a deal had already been agreed) or any other club serves us poorer long term when we're trying to to undo the reputational damage of poor negotiators from previous regimes. The player also has a say in this, otherwise we'd have sold him to Villa or somewhere in the Middle East.

I’d like to ask a few others this too hahahaha. Even bringing him up in other threads when it’s not even necessary.

it could work. i grew up in a small village. there were another two families who were also blessed with three sons of a similar age, like ours was. the 9 of us would spend a lot of time together playing football at the local field. one of the boys’ mums went off with another bloke, leaving the dad and 3 boys behind. everyone thought that marriage was over and the boys would have to continue on life’s path without a mother.

she came back with her tail tucked between her legs about three months later. yeah it was awkward to just ignore it and have no one ever mention it again. there was an unease at any village fetes or events for a while but they’re still together now about 25 years on. probably not happily together, but they are together.

I fear after a positive start he will inevitably start sulking and slacking after only a few games, at which point the fans will turn on him and send him spiralling out of control. Not worth the risk. Take a hit on his price and move on

I don't mind him wanting to play for Barca. For me it's him downing tools and just resigning from playing football early under Amorim. Second thing are his "attempted tackles", he is dogshit defensively. Thirdly, he is on massive wages and should be 3rd choice left winger behind Dorgu and Cunha, what is a ridiculous situation itself. I don't want Carrick to be using Rashford just because it would look stupid to keep him on the bench, and I am 100% this will happen often. 4th reason, his presence demands a certain way of playing football which takes toll and IMO not worth it, he can only play well in counter attacking style and we've been managing that without him recently.

I’m so happy for your ‘friend’. If Rim can come back, Rash can too!
