Martial’s injury record...

In the interest of fact-checking, does anyone have the actual figures? I’ve read a lot of jabs at him this season for having the temerity to get injured, and of course, it is being now used to draw some sort of connection to an apparent attitude issue. My thinking was that he didn’t really have a bad injury record with us, but it seems a growing consensus that he is ‘always injured’.

Anyway, does anyone have the stats please?

I think the myth "he's always injured" is due to him missing important games suddenly due to injury or illness whatever, especially the games when we need him the most to step up.

Eg. There's that fine run of games with Martial being our keyest player, where many in the caf even called it The Martial show or something (season 17/18 and 18/19 ?) and we were racking up good points... and then suddenly he's out and team capitulated started losing points, felt like ages waiting for him to return, when he did, felt like it took a long while to get back in form.

Not sure this is the full stats. I believe he's actually had 7 individual injuries last season.

Thank you very much. I was of the opinion that he was labelled ‘injury prone’ on here with little warrant. He’s in a small group of players who attract a certain type of coverage, and a good run or whatever only serves to quiet the noise temporarily, but he’s one of those who gets this suspicion of poor attitude/professionalism or something like that all the time. Things like this just stick after a while. I’ve read so often this season that we can’t rely on him because he’s always injured, and it’s like everyone’s saying it now. Despite it not being true.

Two things jump at you there:

1) His random "rests" prior to us signing Alexis and injury as soon as that signing was looking like a shambles. I wonder how much of that has nothing to do with actual injuries and all to do with context.

2) He has missed 17 games in Ole's one year. That's a fecktonne of games and, as you say, coincided with key periods in his tenure: the tipping point between "Ole at the wheel" chants and our form nosediving and the start to this season slap bang when we let go of both Sanchez and Lukaku, leaving us up shit creek.

He's had Christmas off the past two years. Let's see if it happens again

Anyone know how many games Jones has actually played/been eligible for out of the max amount of games he's been at the club? Easily has to be -50% doesn't it?

The Athletic wrote an article about him, it reads

"Jones has missed 1,129 days of football because of injuries and illness, according to figures provided to The Athletic by PremierInjuries.com, and perhaps the most striking detail is the number of different medical reasons for what amounts to over three years of absenteeism. Knee, hamstring, calf, hip, toe, foot, ankle, thigh, shin, groin, shoulder, pelvis, back — Jones has had the lot, sometimes on several occasions. There have been 39 injuries in total. He has averaged below 30 games a season throughout his career and, at this level, it can make a huge difference to a footballer’s performance levels when the next injury never seems far away."

So around 4 years missed and he's been here almost 10. Can't blame him. I blame the club for renewing.
