It's interesting that she does not specify or define the "bad behaviour" that went against her "moral values" - I have nothing against former players dishing dirt on other ex-players, but to publish this kind of nonsense whilst both are still playing is a bit weird.

Hampton is recalled. She is selected ahead of her. Earps sulks. Retires from international football at short notice. Writes a book in which she attacks Hampton. Not a good look, really.

I think what Mary Earps has done here is rather cruel and will sour her relationships with fans and with people in the game.

Hampton did have troubles as a young player and was left out of both England's and Aston Villa's squad for a time. In Villa's case, Carla Ward talked about an "incident in training" as the trigger for taking action. It was, according to the stories around at the time, part of a history of ongoing troubles with Villa and with the England women's and girls' teams.

Some combination of physical and emotional issues that sent her into a crisis at some point perhaps? At any rate Wiegman talked about Hannah having, "something she needs to do personally” and that they all had a plan to give her space to do that.

I'm not sure on the back story but the smoke (though no one was talking about what the fire was) was enough that when Emma Hayes took her to Chelsea a lot of people were surprised.

Wiegman is clearly someone who believes that players (and people) can get better and that Hampton did. Better, not just as a footballer, but as a teammate. Wiegman is focused on squad unity, I really don't she'd risk that unless she thought that she'd seen change.

Mary Earps comes across as a sore loser intent on spoiling things for a player who obviously went through a crisis at some point. Mary's form was patchy in her final season with us. Her form got worse when she left us. She wasn't the player she was. Maybe that's all it took for her to ignore that perhaps Hampton wasn't the player or the woman she'd been when she first entered the squad.
 
Hampton was dropped in 2022, reintegrated in 2023, and became first choice in 2025.

The fact is she'd been back in the squad, without issue, for a good two years when Earps quit.

Whatever she'd done was well in the past, and Earps just comes across as incredibly sour, when she could have just said something like "I've played my part and don't want to be sat on the bench, so it's time for someone else to have a go."

Pretty poor from Earp's. She's done her best to get people to turn on her after all the love she received.

She should concentrate on her own form which has been patchy for awhile.
 
I really don’t get what Earps is trying to achieve with these comments.

Hampton was excellent in the Euros so it shows that Sarinas decision was the correct one.

Just comes across incredibly bitter
 
Nobody was likely to buy her book without her making some scandalous claims and having people talk about it being available. Both United and England very quickly moved on and never looked back after replacing her, where would the interest come from? A lot of people do this to sell some books and shes no different.
 
This Earps thing isn’t dying down at all, couple of articles on the Beeb and few in other publications. Seems really ill-advised to release the book at this time.

That's because Earps herself is doing the rounds on media platforms. I presume these were planned in adavance as part of the promotion of the book, but it's turned into a media tour of Earps defending herself against 'the narrative'.

One of the things she repeatedly stressed , for example, is that people have only seen a tiny tidbit about her retirement there's a huge chapter of book dedicated to just that.

You have to wonder about who she has to advse her. Elite football has seen quite a few narcissisticly skewed personalities with shoddy self awareness, and my impression is tvat keepers are more extreme than any other position maybe except for strikers. There was no secret really that a lot of players as well as coaches thought our Schmikes was a big, self centred, blinkered tit much of the time, yet he was well enough advised that he never blew that cover in public like this, as far as I’m aware, anyway.

To me, Mary Earps is a hero for Man Utd and England, vased on her football performances which where at the best of times fabulous. I feared when she announced her exit from us, but it showed in her play that she was already on a downward slope, and with Phallon we have come out brilliantly well, Sir Alex managed to shift and replace star players at the right time several times, but never really with keepers, so the Club deserves credit for that passage.
 
Earps to Phallon might be the best ‘keeper change we’ve done across the entire club, when replacing someone at their peak or close to it. Generally speaking, especially the men’s side it’s been a clown show where we drop off a cliff after a good one (most after Schmeichel, Onana after De Gea for example). We lost Earps towards the top and replaced her with Phallon, who is a revelation. Good work by the club
