Absolutely agree with you and I was about to say the same thing.
He has loads of natural talent and skill and can become a top player.
But I am beginning to question his character and his desire to improve.
Hope I am proved wrong.
Stephen Howson said yesterday that Cavani has done a lot of extra work with him and he's been really receptive to the advice. I know people usually question Howson's insider info but he named Rio Ferdinand as the source and he is a guest on Rio's Five podcast so it's not likely to be bullshit

The winner he scored was 100% Cavani goal if i ever saw one. No better striker to learn from when it comes to movement and positioning. With Mason's finishing combined with movement, he'd become deadly.

This guy’s natural position is striker. He had a goal per game ratio in his latter seasons in the youth teams. His finishing is by far the best at United, he’s bulked up massively and while he isn’t the quickest, he’s still fast and extremely explosive with the ball at his feet, be in when he’s shooting or running at defenders. If we can’t get Haaland, then get Sancho and a cheap backup striker, and move this lad upfront.

He has had alot of chances to play centrally and not done much in nearly all of those games.

Either he gets a whole couple of months to try make that his position or we stick to him as a right hand sided forward.

Usually a big defender of his but thought he was very poor tonight.

That was genuinely a 1/10 performance from him. Had the touch of an elephant and did nothing the entire match.

Seemed to really struggle today. Had little moments where he showed some ability but overall felt his performance was quite poor today. Hopefully gets another chance up top soon.

Really poor game after some decent form. Still seems to lack confidence at the moment.

Looked like the occasion got to him. Struggle to remember Mason making so many bad decisions in the same game. He'll wanna forget this match fast.

Remembering him slamming goals in through defenders legs, thinking, he meant that. Obviously needs more work running at defenders. Get him on the fifa skill diet.

I want to see VDB in his position, because his off the ball movement was really good to see, picking up pockets wide and central and playing a give & go. I think VDB is more snappier in his play which bodes well higher up the pitch.

"Look" at him and you'll see the same thing at our other strikers.

Tony and Edi were the same as Mason - they don't get any service what so ever.

Our midfield is so poor and the other forwards aren't creative enough.

He's still comfortable in possession of the ball and does link up things to a decent standard when he comes deep but his movement and positioning without the ball in the final 3rd tonight was, frankly, dreadful.

He may have hit goals for fun in the reserves but this is a completely different ball game. Numerous players have had their roles changed once they've been consistently played at a higher level and I think Greenwood could be another as I just don't see him as and out and out forward. Again his movement isn't good enough. He doesn't seem willing to throw himself into the danger areas week in, week out. Lacking pure scoring instinct.

Nonsense, frankly. He's got a goalscorer's instincts through and through. He just didn't play as well today as he has recently, and was also struggling to get any ball without dropping too deep to be dangerous.

In so many other games this season he's been really unlucky not to score. If he had the seven or eight extra goals he so easily could have, you wouldn't be saying any of the above. It's knee-jerk.

Nah, I dont see it with Greenwood as a leading man. Wide forward is his best bet.

Probably the worst game I've ever seen him have, every second touch was a tackle and just ran into the oppo when trying to dribble past them

Talented lad for sure and tidy in possession, his off the ball movement isn’t great though and needs a lot of work, plenty of time though for the lad!

I am firmly of the opinion he's not an out and out striker and I would be somewhat surprised if he develops into one. I just don't see it - where is the evidence it suits him? Tonight was simply a bad night irrespective of the positions he took up, so it's not so much about this game but I don't see what people are looking at beyond some good finishes that suggests a number 9. Wide forwards have to finish too, it's not automatic that high proficiency means playing centrally.

We have to be careful not to try and force something that isn't likely as it has ramifications beyond Greenwood, we have to shape the squad with this in mind.

I don't really care which attacking position he plays from, but to suggest he doesn't have goalscoring instincts is wrong. Especially so soon after that goal against Brighton.

Yeah played well recently but was shit today. Happens with young players. Took too long on the ball/couldn't make his mind up with what he wanted to do and nothing came off for him. Still works hard at least, but he'll have better games.

IMO his movement and instincts are that of a central player, not a wide player. His dribbling and touch and style is good playing centrally and being a box player. He's not a creative player at all, he's a decent dribbler but not when it comes to dribbling like a winger should to get past players, and he doesn't have good movement as a winger. Rashford has great movement as a wide player, but he doesn't as a central striker. I'd be shocked if he developed into anything as a wide player but think he'll be a world class striker. Just takes time to learn that position and be able to handle it properly. Very rare for young players to come in and be able to play as a central striker to such a high level like Haaland has managed to do.

It's as if the ball was always going his way when he tried to dribbler players and that he lost his mojo and can't get away from them now. Obviously as a striker he won't be 1v1 as often but I'd hope for some better movement up front into channels too. You can't criticise him too much though with a midfield display like that he wasn't in the game much because of that..

Talented for sure, but apart from a few attributes not all that. His moves aren't that great most of the time, defenders have it quite easy with him apart from when he's facing them and doing step-overs. He'd shine more else where where he'd have a few looks on goal every match, but we need much more from our forwards in this set up. He's 'just' a finisher, not the new Rooney, Rashford, or van Persie, and that's no issue. In the right set-up, he'll shine.

Coaching staff needs to correct the way he receives the ball. His first touch is genuinely horrendous on so many occasions, either bobbles up or goes far away from him when receiving simple passes. Really fecks us over when he's the forward outlet.

Had some decent pieces of okay but didn't get a sniff of goal, the #9 role is a fairly thankless role at United these days.

We don't really play with wingers that are expected to dribble to the byline and whip in a cross or beat their man that often. Beating the defender is secondary to being able to find space in-between the full back to make a run or simply working a position to shoot - which he is pretty good at. Most of his goals have some from a good piece of play where he has worked space from a wider position and got his shot away - albeit teams now understand his strength. If that is one of his strengths why are we so keen to say he should move away from those positions to one where he is sat on 2 or 3 central defenders, often back to goal?

He needs to work on his runs and positioning generally, is it really position specific? That's a skill that can be developed and often is for young players.

I think he'd be considered a little more creative if the numerous opportunities he's provided from pretty impressive crosses had been taken, but alas we lack natural targets and we've fluffed them. He certainly has the technique on the ball. You're right that he's currently more of a goal scorer than a creator but I see enough to think he can develop this, at least to some extent.

I don't see the hold up play, the heading ability, the willingness to run channels, that many goals scored indicative of somebody that loves being in the box. You might say he hasn't had the chance, but it's also why I ask..where is the evidence he's going to be a striker? I look at somebody like Hughill, there is no doubt that if he makes it here he will be a striker, there is no other possibility. With Greenwood given his overall skillset, it's at least a massive question mark.

Really woeful, did nothing of note and should have been subbed for Cavani a lot earlier.

A game to forget, service wasn't good but he did himself no favours. The one thing he's usually dependable on is getting the basics right but not even that today unfortuantely.

These are the kind of teams Mason should be putting to the sword if he’s serious about playing striker for us. They are very ordinary. There was no real support for him. Rashford Bruno and Pogba were just doing their own thing. Feck it. Everyone just looked wrecked tonight. Result in the bag and move on

He’s been training with Martial for too long. Looks very glum at the moment, very little going right for him. Long spells of the match were he’s not involved. I think he’d be better in a 442 setup with a partner but I’m old school.

Seems to have lost his mojo a bit this year. I remember when Foden & Greenwood were picked for the England game had Greenwood the better player. Unfortunately that has changed at the moment as it appears just seems to get better and better.

I can't help thinking Ole just can't get the best out of him. Dread to think if Pep had him would make Ole look and probably is just a average manager .
