Unpopular opinion time..

I think he should be our first choice Striker this season.

May be harsh on Martial but I think Greenwood’s potential is on another scale. Lucky to have such a talent and we should get the most from it
Although I would have no issue playing Greenwood as our striker, I don't think the time is right.

We have a certain style of football now which is reliant a lot on Martial's hold up play and ability to link up the attack and midfield similar to how Firmino does at Liverpool. Martial's strength and receiving the ball under pressure is undervalued a lot due to his other outstanding attributes such as dribbling and close control.

I think for now Martial is perfect for what we're trying to achieve.

Expecting a quieter season from him after his breakthrough season last year. Hope we keep patience with him, still expecting him to get some crucial goals - would be happy if he bagged around 12-15 goals.

For an 18 year old he's unbelievable.
It’s super super possible because second season syndrome is a real thing for young players. Look at Sterling, Rashford, Martial etc as examples. But honestly, Greenwood’s finishing is that potent that so long as he gets chance, he’ll get another 15-20 goal season easily. Only way I see him not doing that is:
1. He doesn’t get game time (owing to injury or selection); or
2. Our general play turns to dog shit.

Even with teams “finding him out” a bit and the above caveat, I think he’ll still have another really good season. Guys a bit of a phenom.

His ability to go left or right, and rocket it in from anywhere, must be terrifying to play against. I think he’s best playing withdrawn (RW) for another season while he bulks up and becomes a stronger man. Getting the ball with your back to the goal in the adults league is something that takes a while to get comfortable with and get used to (at any level). Let’s not forget he’s still a boy.

If he keeps on going as he is, he’s a future golden boot winner.

Hopefully all this talk of a new winger to replace him properly fires him up for next season.

Love that answer about his dad's reaction. No surprise Mason's attitude is top class.

He doesn't seem like a future golden boot winner. That seems too good to be true.

He seems like such a level headed kid. Very impressive and focussed! Family is such a key thing for a footballer- compare Mason’s stability to someone like Ravel Morrison’s- quite sad when you think about it

Hopefully, but at the moment he doesn’t seem to have that instinct to get into the six yard box for tap ins etc, like Rashford does from the left. His xG was quite low last season and he way overperformed it because his shooting from range and angles is so good, but to get to golden boot type level he needs to be getting into more goal scoring positions.

I’m pretty certain that will come with age and experience.

Without doubt this kid will be a number 9. He has been throughout his youth, every aspect and strength within his game is suited to the no 9 position. I agree that currently we want both Martial and Mason on the pitch at the same time, for that reason I agree he stays at RW.

What I suggested in the other thread was that this provides even more reason for us to push for Sancho and address the weakness at RW with a player who's made for that position, then let Greenwood rotate with both Martial as a striker and Sancho at RW. I'd feel more comfortable that Mason was getting experience in his desired position under those circumstances, rather than just leaving him at RW out of convenience or a lack of willing to purchase Sancho.
I thought he played as a 10 in his youth?

Yeah that’s true. Although some of his early goals, when he was up front, we more poacher-like. Europa League group stage and Sheff United spring to mind.

it could also be that, as he’s learning the ropes, he’s sticking to task more (as a right winger). He’s only 18 let’s not forget.

Nice more Ole bashing...
Just because its the champions league winning, baby faced but sometimes angry assassin, solskjaer, doesn't mean we have to lie and say he has the best coaches available around him. They may be good but there is probably better available.

Or we can just judge what’s in front of our own eyes rather than regurgitating crap the media wants us to believe. It’s clear that Ole has managed Mason Greenwood as well as any youngster around and under his tutorage Mason is growing from being a talent, to a top player. Oles man management and knowledge of the striker position indicate there are very few coaches who would of handled Greenwood better.

The poster I responded to said he couldn't see Greenwood winning the golden boot because we don’t have good enough coach’s, but I’m sorry that’s a load of rubbish. Greenwood has already displayed a goal scoring ability the likes of which I have rarely, if ever seen before on someone so young. Anyone finding blame in Ole at this point is seriously pushing an agenda.

Sure and in the spirit of your argument, there is probably world class coaching already going on. Maybe's mean nothing. Mckenna is one of the most highly rated coaches around. What makes him subpar compared to others? His coaching was crap until the right players arrived? Maybe that's how it's supposed to be. There's a reason Pep spends a bajilion pounds on players. Because the lesser players aren't good enough for his methods.

While the skys the limit for this kid, I'd be happy with a consolidation season for him. He'll have to put up with a lot more this season than before - the high expectations of supporters, being more closely watched by defenders, playing against CL quality teams instead of dross in the Europa League - everything going to be harder for him. Depending on how many starts he gets, 10 goals in the league along with another 5 in the cups would be a fine return in my opinion.

I agree with you. It's crazy to make a call like that for a very young player who will probably play under different coaches and setups in his career. It just felt a cheap jibe at Ole indeed.

I don't think he has the best physical, tactical, and psychological coaches to serve his cause.
If there is one area our coaches have really been great at is coaching strikers; Martial, Rashford and Greenwood have all surpassed expectations this season.

Very exited about him next season. No reason to rush him in a central position as long as he is doing good where he is at; lots of great strikers played quite a bit in wide roles.

RVP and Henry played a chunk of their careers on the wing, and their football benefited greatly from it once they moved to the center. If I was Mason I'd be happy wherever the coach puts me in attack and just learn as much as possible. If he plays his cards right, stays grounded and takes care of his body, he will easily play at the top for the next 17 years.

Because he came from the Manutd set up. Fans want coaches that have worked with Pep, Klopp etc.. whilst not knowing anything about our coaching staff.

Mckenna like you say is rated so highly as a coach, him and carrick both got the promotion under Jose as assistant too.

People keep talking about making players better, Pep might improve players but he isnt a magician, he needs the best players.

Obviously if you have 9 WC players you can fit 2 average players in the team and it will be fine.

It’s about getting game time, and it’s easier to develop on the wings, in the same way quite a few CBs get game time in the full back positions at the start of their careers (or at least used to, when FB was less crucial).

It’s a ridiculous post.

Supporters just can’t judge who is a good coach and who is not? Could you list the top 10 coaches in the world?

If you can’t, then you have no idea whether there are better coaches elsewhere, and neither do I.

Yes but who knows who is good and who is not? How can any fan even rate the coaches when none of them are present in any training session?

Good point, let's just keep on replacing our entire coaching staff every couple of years and see how we get on with that. Oh hang on...haven't we tried that already? Compared to where we were when Ole took over we have a much more balanced, harmonious team that actually plays some good attacking football. The glass is not always half empty.

"managers" rarely do the coaching on the pitch now anyway. Even as far back as Fergie, he let Meulensteen take training pretty much every day while he did other things.

While Ole might set the overrall plan and guide the team in what he wants to do, I doubt he's out there 24/7 on the pitch with the players.

What Ole can bring better than anybody is his knowledge of the club, his personal touch with the players and his positive demeanour making it a place players want to be.

We've seen that with VDB already, we probably weren't his first choice at the start but now he's very happy.

I'll go one step further to smash that pathetic logic.

Kieran Mckenna came from Tottenham a few years ago. He was a promising player who had to wrap up his career due to injury. So he carried on at Tottenham as a youth coach. He then caught the eye of Pocchettino. Who likes wonderful flowing style of football and most on here rate as a better coach than Ole. Guess what? Mckenna was highly rated by Poch. Mckenna learned a lot from Poch as well.

There are levels to this. He's highly rated and his tactics are only now coming to fruition. Amidst all the unrest at Old Trafford under Mourinho, another world class coach who rates Mckenna, training was never the problem at United.

Mckenna is a rising star. Now... would I still want more coaches for specific plays? Yes. I'd like a coach who specialises in defenders playing out from the back and linking up midfield. Mckenna might be that, but he's got the whole team to worry about.

Now imagine if McKenna's name was "continental". Noone would be complaining here.

The coaches were not great, they were simply adequate. Rashford and Martial both have never hit the heights under van Gaal, whom I otherwise diss. Martial especially has lost a yard of pace and can no longer be considered the speed demon that he used to be. The team has grown better, due in part to Solskjaer, but the strikers have been wearing the proverbial Emperor's clothes so far. They were found out by Copenhagen and Sevilla and they will be outclassed in the Champions League next season.
