He just needs to stay fit until the final, and then have a good pre season.

If we can inter change Bruno, Amad and Mount in the 10 position, with hopefully a new one, we would be better equiped.

Hpapy for him, but nevertheless, he needs more to prove me that the 70M was a good investment
Are you including wages in that 70m now?

But agreed, overall. Let’s hope he stays fit.

I've long despaired about this signing but he shut me up last night. Hope he builds on it

Buzzing for him to be honest. Hope he scores a worldie in the 97th minute winner to win you lot the Europa League.

These are Mason Mount's Premier League stats/rankings from 2020-21 and 2021-22 with Chelsea. In 2021-22 he scored 11 goals and had 10 assists in the Prem. He has weaknesses, sure, but if he can find full fitness consistently again, he's proven that he can be a very good player. If I saw us linked to a player with those kind of stats I'd normally be very excited.

Now we just need to make sure he eats his vegetables..

Across 20-22, Mount had a total of 33 GA in the league. Looks decent but it’s notable that 9/12 came against the bottom 6 in 20/21 and a further 15/21 against the bottom 6 in 21/22 (with 6 coming in 2 matches against 20th) Now, most players will stat pad to some extent but over 70% of your league contributions coming against the worst teams in the league is a concern.

Anyway, that’s the past. He scored two fantastic goals yesterday and needs to continue to impress. We will all be happy if this thread is full of comments about his magical pieces of skill and key contributions.

More of that as an inside 10 please. That was satisfying. Football aside, it also helps that Mount is blessed with one of the most important buffs a human can have - good looks.

I always thought he would have been a great signing if we got to see more of him, but I had basically written him off because of his injury record. What an absolute worldview he is. He showed with the last goal that he deserves the number even, Beckham would have been proud of that one.

Stay fit he's a key player, I think it might be that simple.

This is what I've always believed. I hope this isn't just a flash in the pan for him and that he can build something sustainable again.

I will be happy if he proves me wrong and becomes a key player for us, I have always thought he doesn't offer enough but has decent technical ability and good work rate but had become a walking yellow card. Perhaps he has been trying too hard to make an impression and rash with his tackling. He has been arriving in good spaces and getting on the end of good chances since his return which makes him a decent threat.

I would start him up top as a false 9 in the final because he knows how to get into spaces and will help us keep the ball rather than passes up top ending in loss of possession. It could help unsettle the CBs too.

I roll my eyes when someone mentions "turning a corner" after one performance, but last night felt like it could be just that... honestly it kind of needs to be.

His general play is good, he brings a liveliness when he comes on, but he needs to offer a goal threat when playing as a #10, I hope this gives him a bit more confidence in front of goal, which he has been missing.

Of course he needs to stay fit as well, that's the biggest factor

If he fixes his disappearing act for 20 minutes at a time and stays fit, I truly believe he can be a good player for us. Sometimes I don't even hear his name in a game, and he has been on the pitch for half an hour. It's not an easy feat to manage that.

I agree. One of Bruno's strongest qualities is his ability to do the killer pass early. A lot of players are capable of passing but they need time either to adapt their body or to make the decision in their mind. Bruno does it quicker than anyone I've seen recently.

This is also his undoing when playing deeper when he pressed and/or surrounded. He often tries to dribble out of trouble which is fine to fail further up the pitch but absolutely detrimental when in our own half. Mainoo is the best, in my opinion, from our current midfielders, in receiving deep and having the physicality to shield the ball if needed, to dribble out of trouble when possible, to pass when an option is available, and to cut the lines with a through ball when the opposition allows it.

Ideally, we'd have someone like a Bentancur or Joao Gomes from Wolves as that first received/shield in front of the defensive line, BUT in Amorim's system, he has now tried using one of the CBs as the receiver, moving in front of his CB partners, and with the WBs providing wide options, looks like we are less dependent on the central progression options.

What's your view on that? Considering our better CB options (De Ligt, Yoro, Martinez, Maguire, Heaven), do you see this as a viable option?
I think the backline has potential to develop into a strong part of the team. I think one more addition at CB would be ideal to help us progress as a team and create a strong foundation from the back where we can then have a clear and concise system of play. But imo it's about having a variety of weapons in those first two lines at CB and deeper midfield which will enable us to be alot more unpredictable in our build up phase, where the opposition cannot just pin down one or two players in the defensive line knowing there's a lack of vertical passing threat in deeper midfield.

And it's about having variety with and without the ball where both the CBs and the deeper midfielders will be required to do alot of the heavy lifting as far as controlling the game in-possession against extreme provocation due to the opponent's coordinated high pressing. And that then has to be backed up by a strong rest defense where defending spaces in isolation becomes a key requirement, especially in a higher line if the aim is to implement a more expansive brand of football. These two concepts need to come together if we want to see a more proactive system of play develop. Because the system mainly revolves around how you as a team are going to progress the ball forward through the thirds of the pitch. And therefore the CBs and deeper midfielders are absolutely crucial in executing the strategy due to the enormous risks they will face in-possession and out of possession in isolation when defending space in a higher line. Everything else from the goalkeeper to the fullbacks will then revolve around the CBs and deeper mids who will provide the foundation for the system of play to take hold and manifest itself on the pitch.

I honestly don't know alot about Bentacur or Joao Gomes but we could really do with a midfielder who has the ability to play as the first receiver in midfield whilst also having the ability to out duel opponent's out of possession. I think if we manage to sign a player of that ability, then I'm confident we'll see a noticeable improvement in our league form and also see a clear system of play develop. For me signing a midfielder of the requisite attributes mentioned above is very important and if we manage to aslo sign a CB like Ousmane Diomande or the lad at Bournemouth, Dean Huijsen. Then I would really look forward to the new season.

In the last 10 minutes against Lyon, I thought Mason mount looked like a footballer, but a football who was in a 5 a side training session. I then thought his job is not to make anything happen more to make sure that nothing happens.

Against Bilbao he looked like a smooth quality footballer.

Under Amorim, he's been trying to do a better job than under Ten Hag. There's a top quality footballer in there if he can stay injury free.

Not Branthwaite?

His positioning around the penalty box is excellent. He somehow slightly reminds me of Thomas Muller.

Never really rate him, but goodness gracious, that was one of the best cameo i’ve seen in years at United. Creative, creating chances, a bit of flair, full of energy, just having a presence to impact the play.
Just like what i want to see from a 10.

Branthwaite is a good player but I feel the Bournemouth CB, Dean Huijsen has more strings to his bow. Obviously he's still very young but those added attributes he has makes him a more appealing player for me. He seems to have a very well rounded game and I think he's a player I'd personally take a chance on for the reported release clause, which is said to be about 50m.

I agree on Huijsen, but I understand several clubs want him inc Real Madrid and Liverpool.

He was a weird signing at the time given the way we played and our need for a CM. Bizarrely the change of formation has made the signing far more astute, retrospectively. If he maintains his fitness, and that’s a big if, he really is suited to that position.

He wasn't a weird signing. At all. He was taking the place of McT and Fred who we sold for good money. A young hard worker with bags of experience who can score and assist. His fitness made all the naysayers look like they knew what they were on about. Nothing player, invisible etc. Pure muck. He's clearly been a quality player who since he came here can't get back to that because he's not been able to stay fit. If he stays fit not only is he a starter he's a leader and one of our more important players. Glad he's on a roll. Please don't get injured!

But McT and Fred were both central midfielders. Mount can do a job in central mid but his best position is where he is now playing, as a 10. It’s worked out well with the change of formation.

Of course it was if you factor in what we paid (add to that he was in his last year of his Chelsea contract) and what we needed and the formation the manager was playing at the time.

Also on the fee's we got for them two was peanuts compared to what we paid for Mount, especially Scott with hindsight to what he's doing at Napoli.

Saying all that genuinely hope nothing but the best for him and his fitness. A player of his quality and experience will be huge next season if he's fit, and unlike Eth's United he's clearly got a place in this team.

He's not one of these "been there, done it" type of players. The coaches and the manager keep commenting how determined his is to get back and make it at the club. A fantastic attitude. That's half the job if you have had some bad injuries. I'd love to see him have a run of games.

I still maintain that Mount is a better starting option than Garnacho. His movement off the balls is miles better, he isn't a turnover machine, and his pressing is elite. Plus I think Garnacho's direct style is far better suited coming off the bench and running at tired defenders.

And not that the PL really matters anymore this season, but tactically he's a way better fit playing against AWB who will pocket Garncho without breaking a sweat. AWB has also struggled with attackers who have smart movement off the ball. His tackling is world class but his run tracking is garbage.

He was an utterly atrocious signing for the fee we paid and salary we handed out.

Ten hag wanted him to play as a dual 8 with Bruno alongside casemiro which was mental

He was also coming off the worst period of his career in terms of injuries and form. Not to mention he only had a year left on his contract

With him and Bruno as 8's, we were worse that 1 man midfield Casemiro. Someone said above, this change of formation will suit him much better, if he stays fit and play like the other night.

Don’t disagree with any of that. He never made sense in that formation or system. He makes much more sense now, if he can stay healthy.

Ultimately we'd all still much rather see Amad, Cunha and Bruno fill those wide 10 positions than Mount. So he's still ultimately just a 55 million pound injury prone squad player, no matter which formation we play. I suspect Garnacho will be widely considered a better option when he learns to finish, which he has plenty of time to do given he's just 20.

Mount has been either poor or injured for 3 years straight. People are very, very optimistic if they think we're getting the best of Mount going forward, just because he finally had a couple of good cameos.

But if his Thursday performance becomes the norm then you'll hear no complaints from me.
