Don't think he's ever played as a regular CM for us.

You're thinking of him as a 10 I think. When ETH tried to play two of them in that role, leaving Casemiro as the lone CM.

Yes he did first season. We signed him with the mentality he could play as a deep CM/DM in our 4-2-3-1 like Eriksen did. Because Bruno plays all the time Mount played a bunch of games in CM. And he ran around winning the ball but didnt have much effect with the ball. He didnt create and wasnt that noticable probably why you dont remember.

Just looked it up, its 2 starts as a DM in a 4-2-3-1 in the premier league and 1 as a CM in a different formation. From looking at it, it might have been in a 4-1-4-1 game. So its less than I remembered - I'm thinking he also came off the bench in midfield as well as he had 9 overall subs in the league as well. In those 162 mins starting as a CM/DM in a 4-2-3-1 he averaged 4.4 tackles per 90 mins which is what I remembered from that time and that put him ahead of Casemiro and our other midfielders. But its obviously just 2 starts and then the other one probably in a 4-1-4-1

No that didn't happen. For starters it was a handful of games and Mount/Bruno both played as advanced midfielders and the chemistry was all off between the 3. Casemiro isloated. Was very quickly dropped and then Mount was out for ages with inhury.

Very different from playing as a regular CM as Eriksen, Ugarte, Mainoo, Casemiro and Bruno under Amorim did.

I'm not saying he's the answer there but it's simply a question of what position gets the best out of him. At this stage now I think it's clearly in a deeper role than his usual 10 or wide midfield role.

Yes it absolutely happened

https://www.whoscored.com/teams/32/archive/england-manchester-united?stageId=22076

Go down the bottom to squad list and you will see he had 2 starts (+? sub appearances coming on as a replacement for a midfielder) and another in CM in another formation

So you're saying he can't play there based on about 3 appearances from 2 to 3 years ago. That's assuming Whoscored even have it exactly right as to where on the pitch he actually featured between CM and ACM.

No, I'm just saying hes played there and didnt do much but what he did do was show a good attitude winning the ball

He also only started 2 matches in AM that season. So more in midfield than as a #10. So the feeling that he was unerwhelming when he signed was slightly more based on CM than AM although he didnt play a lot in either position

Really sad about his injuries.

Weirdly reminds me of Ledley King for Spurs. A player with great potential and just blighted by injuries.

Sadly I do think we need to just move him on. There is no point keeping injury prone players, no matter how good they are.

Thought he was injured again then.

If he can keep fit he'd be an amazing player to keep. That's a big if, but think it's worth another season

But he's never shown he can be amazing in a united shirt, so is he really worth keeping around for another season on those wages?

Ledley King was a game changer when he was on the field, can we say the same about Mount?

I like Mount and he works hard for team but only concern is his contribution levels when he is fit. I expected more of him to be honest.

Whether he's worth it or not is irrelevant, he has a contract that United will be paying whether he stays or is shown the door, same with Shaw

If he's shown the door that means we won't be paying him no? Not that it matters because the blokes broken and no one would be stupid enough to buy him. Can't believe he's been here for nearly 3 years and had about as many memorable moments in that time, truly one of are worse purchases.

Well the point I was addressing was that he's worth keeping around as can be an amazing player for us if he's fit, which I disagree with so I think it is relevant?

I don't see the club loaning him out as he's professional and we will most likely think he's going to get the best care possible here. He's a write off though. He'll stay till the final year of his contract and go on the cheap or on a free. Just one of those things. Excellent footballer and seems like a great guy it just never happened for him here. A bit like Hargreaves or something but obviously in a less successful era

Short answer: No, clearly not.

As for the Ledley King analogy (see above): Mount has (had) potential, sure. He showed that at Chelsea. But he's never been anywhere near Ledley King in terms of potential, he's not in that category.

What I like about Mount is that he is, one of the few, of our players who can keep the ball and be tidy with it. His injuries are a massive issue but if that could go away he could have been a big asset imo

Aside from the injuries, I would actually suggest that he is exactly what we need heading into next season.

Someone who you'd trust to do a decent job in any of the attacking positions. Works hard, tactically astute, seemingly happy to be a squad player, versatile.

Injuries and high wages pretty much ruin the whole thing, but we'll probably have to make the most of it.

Like Rashford, we're not going to find a buyer for Mount. His fitness record is a serious concern and I'd rather just see him kept off the pitch for the rest of the season and not risk another injury that would have him out of summer training, but if he can finally turn the corner on his fitness problems we'll have an outstanding squad player ready to serve whenever we're an attacking player or two short due to injury or suspension, which is virtually guaranteed to be the case over a 50+ game season we'll get to enjoy next season.

Who's going to buy him though?

Great player when fit, but if he was fit then he'd be playing for us. So not much chance of anyone else taking that gamble.

He's been the opposite though. In the attacking positions he has no end product so you cant count on him when he does play. His goals and assists from his appearances for us is shocking

7 goals and 2 assists in 29 starts, 35 subs. 65 games and less than 10 goal involvements

In another universe, Mount and Rashford are battling it out to be starting on England's LW for the World Cup.

In this universe, we're paying about £600,000/week for two players who have totaled about 800 minutes for us in the league this season.

Modern day Mark Bosnich and Jesper Blomqvist.

I don’t think he’s contributes much when he is actually fit . He’s good and tidy on the ball if you want him to play simple passes. But for the fee he’s a complete waste of money. He doesn’t really contribute attacking wise.
But we are stuck with him unfortunately . I think he’s the last of the “vastly overpaid” players once Sancho and Rashford leave this summer.

We're not, Barca are fortunately picking up Rashford's wage this year so just Mounts wage this campaign.

This gets repeated a lot on this forum but it's not really true is it. He can't really play well on the wing as he doesn't have the dynamism or end product and he'll never be an option upfront. He could possibly play as a 10 but he'd still be third choice in that position at best. I've said it before but for a £50 million signing who's amongst one of our highest paid players and is meant to be in his prime, the standards for him are on the floor.

I like him, he's the sort of player I always have time for but man what were we thinking when we bought him? 50m for a guy whose contract was up in the summer. If we'd waited, we'd have gotten him on a free, or figured out that his injury problems made him pretty much worthless.

He was an effective young talent in 2020 and 2021, scored a decent number of goals and established himself in the England team.

Wrecked by injury over 3 years , the manager likes him, I expect if he's fit we'll see a lot of him, there's a player there in the right system
Sorry pal but… name checks out. Very unlikely.

Sancho, Mount, Antony, Hoijlund, Onana. Apalling. How much did we waste on that little lot? $300k + ? I’m sure I’ve missed one or two

Man Utd 2:1 Brentford
Needs shifting. Just doesn’t offer anything for those big wages he is on.

He is looking like one of the worst signings in Utd history. He seems like a decent lad but I think it’s best to move him on in the summer. I would keep Zirkzee instead

We can't move him on. He's on £250k a week with UCL, but he's probably more like £100k a week player given his injuries. He's obviously not going to agree to lower his wage that much (or probably not at all) on a new contract with another team. So the only option is United subsidizes the difference. £150k a week gap for 2 years is £15M we'd have to pay him (roughly, of course).

So the question is, say we can get £20M fee for him. After the £15M payout we keep £5M, plus gets £12.5M in annual wages off the books for 2 years. Is that worth it? Honestly, it could be. Overall it'd be £30M in fees + saved wages. But it's not huge, and that's assuming you can find another club he'd prefer to be at over United to agree to the move.

Compare to someone like Zirkzee, who we might be able to get £30M in fee for still, plus save £6M in annual wages over two years. That'd be £42M in fees + saved wages. So we'd get more for Zirkzee than Mount effectively.

More likely Mount just plays out his contract here.

More likely indeed Mount sees out his contract, but another way to think about him is that if we believe we’re just a few players away from a PL and CL title run next season he’s a very decent option to have in the squad. But no, he is not a 250k/week footballer.

Interesting article on him recently in The Athletic. Disappointing signing but comes across as an absolute top guy for the work he’s done with sick kids.

His career is unfortunately going to be remembered for his body letting him down, not his mentality as a player or person.

We were stupid for signing him in the first place and he’s not the first talent who never really fulfilled it because he’s made of glass.

True. Very sad for him, and a big setback for us.

Going to be wild that he’s getting a pay rise since we’ve qualified for CL.

What stupid signing he was, he's going to be another expensive player who leaves on a free at the end of this contract. Mega wage and terrible injury record.

He was never going to play ahead of a man that plays every match.

Pray that Frankie Lamps can persuade Coventry to make him their statement signing for their PL campaign. I mean honestly it wouldn't be the worst move for Mase, if he could stay fit he would be playing for a coach that loves him and the team would be built around him.
