Mason Mount | 2026/27 Performances

If fit I would like us to have more players like Mount who can move the ball around quickly and show intelligent movement without the ball. This is how Spain dominate their opponents.
However I fear his current hype will end with us not buying another midfielder and Mount back in the treatment table in October.

Yeah, he’s a fabulous footballer.

He's not fabulous as a 10. He lacks the end product to be that rated that highly.

But that's why I've been saying for a while he should be dropped deeper. It removes the weakness from his game. Or at least shifts away from it.

He won't stay fit.

It wouldn't really surpise me if he is fit for a large portion of the season. We are playing more games but we also now have more bodies and options in midfield especially if we get another CM in. Mount doesn't need to be fit for every single game. Currently he's 4th choice CM (maybe 5th if we buy another CM);and 2nd/3rd choice CAM as Tielemans can play there and Lacey. As long as he can play his part like he did near the end of last season then he will provide a good contribution. Again, most clubs don't have a 4th choice let alone a 5th choice CM of his quality.

I hope we will still get another midfielder regardless, simply because of his fitness issue. But I can see Ineos using him as a reason to not sign another midfielder.
Whether Mount is considered as midfield option or not doesn't change a thing. We are after a completely different type of player to be most likely a backup for Santos.

Santos (+1) --- Tielemans (Mainoo/Mount)
We are in pretty good shape for the more advanced player in midfield two, it's the more defensive one backup that we're missing.

Did he not play in midfield in the last league game last season away at Brighton when we had already secured third place but they were playing for Europe? The game we won by 3 goals?

If he stays fit (big if I know), his ability is not really in doubt.

Tieleman's is equally good in a deeper playmaking role as he is further advanced. I agree we'll need a more aggressive player in deeper areas to help with tackling and transitions, but I do expect to see Tielemans used there too.

That's fine, but I don't realistically expect Tielemans will cover that much of defensive role over a season. In a backup scenario ("Phis Jones in midfield" type of case), sure, but those are hardly worth discussing.

Almost a quarter of his senior appearances have been in that position. We're not talking about emergency cover.

Banging the injury drum again? He missed 9 games last season to injuries, and all of them were just minor knocks, the last (and longest) one kept him out for a bit over a month.

I like him as a squad player, which is probably good for him to stay fit, the team will play in multiple competitions so him being available will be needed, I trust him when he is subbed on because he always comes on with full intensity and doesn't feck around.

Which is anomalous when you look at his overall time with us. Fans are absolutely right to be wary of viewing him as a reliable option.

For his sake (& for our benefit), I really hope he can remain fairly injury free this season. I can only imagine how frustrating it must have been for him. Seems a decent professional and hard worker as well.

Yet he played the equivalent of 11 full matches across the season? He was very likely compromised even when on the bench which is why his minutes were limited. Add to that his previous 2 seasons consisted of the equivalent of 7 full games and 6 the year before that, it is very bloody obvious why people keep "banging the injury drum".

Jeez, when you look into it it's brutal. Combined PL minutes from the last three seasons for Mount comes to 2152.

Sure, just seems odd to claim he's no doubt going to be injured when all of his injuries last season were minor knocks, and none kept him out for long.

When you're a squad player who plays primarily in the role one of the best players in the world plays who never happens to be injured or tire, that's what happens. We also found a midfield trio to be working in Casemiro, Mainoo and Bruno and Carrick was probably desperate to get top 4, so no point risking it by rotating Mount into a position he hasn't played much in.

Like I said above, all of his injuries were minor knocks who kept him out for a brief period, the longest was a bit over a month. Maybe there is hope for him. It is very positive that none of his injuries were of the kind he used to struggle with before, like his hamstring or the calf injury he had.

It's just basic probability. He's had some chronic injury issues and over the past three years he's spent more time injured than fit, so it's not odd to claim that at all. Pessimistic maybe, be grounded in reality and experience.

How about the fact that Bruno got injured, Mount stepped into play 1.5 games before getting injured himself? His whole time here he has played a pathetic amount of minutes and his reliability is awful.

It sucks for us and it sucks for him, but those are the facts. I feel sorry for the guy and I hope that he gets over his injury issues, but there is no way in hell he should be relied upon because the minute he goes down injured and is out for 3 months everyone will say how ridiculous it was for us to not mitigate this circumstance.

I think Mount is more likely to stay healthy as a CM, before he used to play winger/AM for us and under Ten Hag the system of one midfielder which all required him to very often sprint at full speed, both for attacking but especially to press the wing backs / CBs, which is when he is the most likely to get the muscle injuries of the past few seasons. In this 442 system that we play he will do far fewer high speed runs and it will be more about positioning. So hopefully this new position will suit his body a lot better

I agree, not average only in the sense that he is our only ‘deeper’ midfielder who makes a good passing decision more often than not - pretty sure that is Tieleman’s strong point too. In terms of providing genuine quality week in week out over the course of a season he’s not that player.

I don’t think he should be a starter here even without the injury concerns so I can see why some people would want to see the back of him especially given the wages.

He missed just 9 games because we barely had any games scheduled due to no Europe and domestic cup games.

It was a "good" season for him injury wise because he was only unavailable for 23% of games. Usually it's over 50%.

The key is though he was barely playing any minutes when available, which is a massive help to him not getting injured again, because you know the moment he is asked to play he'll be sidelined again. In a world where we play two games a week and he has actual regular game time when available, his body will be breaking down more often.

Average player? Absolutely not.

When fit and on form he is quality.
He's a Connor Gallagher whose decent on the half turn. If he was fit and on form there would still be 20 better players than him in the league either as a central midfielder or a 10.

Andrey Santos ?

He needs to give us, the Manchester United fans, a big, big season. That should be all the motivation he needs.

He has the experience, intelligence and ability to play as an advanced, deep lying, or box-to-box midfielder.

Mason Mount needs to get on with it, or he should get shipped out.

I'm not sure if he has the character to be that first XI player.

Of course, it's all about fitness. So he needs to get an stay fit. He is on massive wages and has done v v little at Manchester United. Either he is good to Christmas or he can go imo. We cut too many players, far too much slack.

Like Rashford, his wages will mean he will be here until his contract expires. No club with any sense would take on an overpaid player that can't go two months before breaking down. We just have to hope that he can offer something to the team when he is fit, and that is something that hasn't happened since he has arrived.

His body is likely broken. I'm sure he'd love to give us all a great season, but if his hip issue is a permanent thing, then hoping his fitness and subsequent appearance numbers will magically improve, is not really based in objective reality.

I'm also quite sure the club would've already tried getting rid of him, if there were any takers naive enough to speculate on his fitness. Unfortunately it's far too obvious that he's not a reliable investment for anyone and therefore he'll stay. He's basically Phil Jones. I wouldn't even be surprised if he also retired shortly after his contract with United expires.

People on here are re-writing his story. Yes he's been injured a lot but plenty on here didn't rate him at Chelsea, hated when he played for England, we're gutted when we signed him. Look how many good ratings he's had when he's actually been fit, most games he's started he's been anonymous. A couple of pre-season friendlies and the last game of the season against a 75 year old Brighton midfield don't change anything

I am not sure the club would have tried too hard in getting rid of him. Fans do not consider it, but the clubs really do consider the human element and fact that they are dealing with a human being who is trying his best but his body is failing him and would not rush to discard him like a piece of meat. Instead the club would be doing what they can to get him on the pitch and also helping to look after his mental wellbeing.

He will likely be here until his contract is up, unless a club shows interest and he manages to stay fit but desires more regular action. You mention Phil Jones and you saw how the club stood by him and kept him on the books, despite fans complained about what a waste of space and money he was. This was because the club, while not a charity, feel a duty of care to its employees and know all of the information behind the scenes and know the human being involved and the level of contribution that these players may have that we do not see off the pitch.

Bruno got injured when Mount was fit....Mount lasted 1.5 games as his replacement before getting injured himself. The fact he missed 9 games officially is carried by many factors outside of just him actually being fully fit and his fitness was super unreliable when he was called upon. He has played the equivalent of around 24 full matches in his 3 seasons here. It should not need explaining why people talk about his injuries nor why no one in their right mind would consider him reliable from a fitness stand point.

While I agree with you, we're talking about Ineos here. They didn't show a lot of duty of care for all the employees they booted out.

On top of that Berrada's on record saying any player has two years to prove himself and unless they do that, they should be sold. His words, not mine.

I realised that as I was typing, to be honest. I can't say the same for INEOS as our previous management because INEOS and Jim certainly seem more ruthless and less caring about the human beings behind the employees.

Totally agree, a nothing player who if fit, big if, runs around a bit without doing a great deal. Arguably one of the worst transfers, if not the worst, in our history and yes I'm including Sancho and Antony in that conversation.

What's worse is his re-emergence in pre-season will likely see us not invest further into our midfield for this campaign that I feel will be hugely detrimental to us. I'd love him to prove me wrong, stay fit and contribute, but I never got it at Chelsea nor England.

A "nothing player"? Come on. I didn't really want him when we bought him because I didn't see the need for him (with plenty of other needs in the squad, but that's been the story for a couple of decades), but he's always obviously been a classy player and he's always worked hard. If it weren't for the injuries, he's a manager's dream, and that's the reason they all speak highly of him.

That being said, we cannot rely on him staying fit. As with a couple of others, unfortunately.
