(CNN) — Police in the New Zealand city of Christchurch have urged people to stay off the streets as they respond to a reported mass shooting.

Armed police have been deployed after receiving reports of shots fired in the city center at 1:40 p.m. Friday local time. Authorities described it as a "serious ongoing firearms incident."
Police have not confirmed deaths or injuries yet.

According to New Zealand news site TVNZ, the incident took place at a mosque.

Video shared online and not verified by CNN purportedly shows a gunman walking into the mosque and opening fire.

Links got removed, but the description sounds horrifying.

RIP the victims. Is islamophobia even a thing in NZ?

Sounds like he was a regular in an 8chan nazi community? Don't much know about 4chan/8chan.

Video was the craziest thing I've ever seen. He treated it like a videogame.

Posting a link to reddit which has a direct link to a man massacring innocent people... in a thread titled Youtube fame gone too far, almost seems like you're implying this has some correlation to Pewdiepie himself
I think the wide variation of people who are pushing "subscribe to pewdiepie", is interesting. I have seen many say he is a symbol of the authentic independent internet unlike the corporate T-Series. And I have seen many say that it is important for the west to keep its status against an army of fast-breeding Indians who are overtaking them, and the youtube subscription battle, of all things, is a part of that.
The shooter is a 8channer who obviously liked the humour of referencing this kids' meme before killing dozens. At the same time, I wouldn't be surprised if he has seen or has in his head that second argument too. And I think P's history, with the "gas the Jews" and the n-word on stream, has definitely endeared him to the right on the internet as an edgy free-speech guy and not just a juvenile kids' entertainer, which is another reason why the shooter referenced him when he was starting. His manifesto is about a murdered Swedish girl, and his gun has the 14 words and references to the crusades, I thought it was interesting that he ended up with Pewdiepie as his pep talk.

A neat secondary thing, mostly a coincidence, and something I realised after I made the post, is that Ben Shapiro, who was an inspiration for a Canadian mosque shooter, is a guest of P and another involved in pushing that meme.

Anyway I'm moving this to the main thread now.

I’ve found the 8chan conversation where he posted that he was about to attack. People literally wished him “godspeed”.

fecking hell

If this doesn't destroy the site it will bring a whole of newfags. Either way prepare for the storm. I think it might be good if 8ch gets taken down, would force us to start working IRL

Honestly, I said just yesterday on here that I think the internet is full of bitter people and getting worse. Imagine that combined with fecked beliefs and passionate hatred, and finding others that are the same. It's a breeding ground for more hate and egging each other on. That, and now a platform to show it to each other.

From the comments on there, I’d have to agree with you. People literally rejoicing what that video showed. Unbelievable.

I’ve said for at least a year now, I’m convinced that ultimately social media has done more harm than good.

As a side note... you can get AR’s and hi capacity magazines in New Zealand?

I spent time watching one of those boards before another shooting (can't remember which one) and it's just not healthy. You have to hope those guys aren't going to form a big mass, otherwise, like ISIS, everyone will be a victim of their nihlist violence.

It's a growing movement worldwide, probably in response to the minority of Islamic extremism which gets airtime.
RIP.
I don't ever want to see that video so hopefully it's deleted for good.
And they feel empowered by Trump and others who've gathered steam. Someone from NZ in the Reddit news thread said, while it's a pretty quiet place, they noticed some come out the woodwork when Trump came in to power.

It certainly gave a voice to racists in Britain who felt like they were being pushed down.

Can only imagine it had the same effect on the hardcore too.

This is really fecked up :(. Casualties are high because they timed the shooting during Friday prayer, just after the imam finished the sermon :(.

Someone on Reddit said last time something happened the gun laws changed. I wonder if they'll want to be seen as proactive in comparison to the US and make them even more strict.

Tragic.

I don't understand the "subscribe to Pewdiepie" nonsense. Apparently the shooter said it as he cowardly gunned down innocent people.

What the feck does it mean?

Jesus. I made a big mistake and watched the video of his live stream. Don't fecking do it. I feel sick, I think I'm going to throw up. What was I thinking? :houllier::(
I seen it too and it's fecking horrible.

Innocent people being killed is obviously awful but there's a particularly gut wrenching moment as he exits the mosque that I don't think I'll forget any time soon.

I don't think New Zealand will just use thoughts and prayers, especially considering what Australia did about guns. It really likes to be a nice, friendly and safe place (though the laws restricting the buying of properties by foreigners aren't friendly).

I read the shooter may be an Australian.

Pewdiepie is a YouTuber with most number of subscribers on YouTube currently in competition with an Indian Music brand TSeries who are hot on his heels for most subscribers . Pewdiepie has been encouraging the rest of his subscriber to get new people hence the subscribe to Pewdiepie reference to increase his subscriber count . This is truly a weird thing to say at that moment .

About the incident it is very disturbing and horrible incident . I hope they catch the shooter and the accomplices . It is really heartbreaking to see all the encouragement he received before he started to go on this shooting spree . The anonymity of sitting behind a keyboard and typing their hearts out really show the true extent all the hate around us has reached .

He’s Australian according to his manifesto

The whole stream is a fecking meme show. It's completely crazy and yeah it's all over 8chan and most people there seem to think it's hilarious. :houllier::mad:
I don't know much about this, but is there any time in history when total irony co-exists with total sincere violence like this? I can't think of anything. The subscribe to pdp at the start of the vid really stuck out to me partly for that reason.
The crusaders he is inspired by, and ISIS today - both extremely violent, but did any of them talk feel the need to spread memes while murdering? Maybe some occupying armies who have total superiority over the locals could do something like this.

It’s like some people’s brains can’t handle the Internet. Everything is free for ridicule and they can’t separate real life from fake and lose empathy and go cold.

Kids I teach are like that. Everything that happens is a goddamn meme to them.

The Nazis specialised in both, and particularly relished irony ('Arbeit macht frei' is just one example of many).

The Bangladeshi cricket team was right near that mosque when the attack started. Escaped across the square when they heard shots.

I visited 8chan. I'd never heard of it until now. It is literally a cesspool of racism and anger and rage and xenophobia and moral repugnance. It's like reading a KKK manifesto. People are genuinely rejoicing the coward's act and calling him a hero. And everything is a fecking meme. It's so tragically bizarre and repugnant.

Incomprehensible. It's sad that human beings think and act this way. Sites like 8chan normalize and encourage such behaviour so it's likely only going to get worse.

Well I've just seen the screenshots of his post before he went on this shooting. It's very distressing.
