Moore's timing & positioning was simply immaculate

thats not the pitch from that game:lol:
Nothing is! Moore's tackle is from the 1970 WC game against Brazil & Best's pirouette is from the game against England 2 years later (the pitch is from the same game, if I'm not mistaken) :)

But yeah, looks surprisingly decent compared to the mole-infested potato field that they've played at.

Not Baggio's best game but he was pulling the strings, and Del Piero was excellent without necessarily being influential throughout the match - ended the match with 2 assists and a goal.

Not a comp but some excellent quality footage with plenty of relatively unknown greats - Szymaniak, Rahn, Juskowiak, Van der Hart and Wilkes etc. Seeler was a class above the rest though. Might make a comp or two later.

Szymaniak was rather impressive too, a proper B2B presence with decent ball playing abilities (explains all those WORLD CLASS ratings if you get what I mean :wenger:) and Rahn was eerily similar to Libuda in his playing style - extremely direct, pacy and always threatening on the ball. The Dutch weren't at the races though. Germany played some neat football and some decent one touch football at times. Juskowiak, as a right footed LCB, caught the eye too.

This was reminiscent of the FA Cup final where Tom Finney's Preston lost to West Bromwich — while the star of the team was fantastic, the rest of his teammates looked like absolute amateurs (which was partly true for Finney's crew). It was quite surprising to watch, since the last game that I've just watched the game against England where Northern Ireland looked like a well-cohesive team that had actual strategy that included plays without George Best. Well, this performance was painful to watch.

Best was incredible though.

Absolutely insane.....league debut and he is pretty much running the show alongside Xavi, like a season pro veteran in his early 30s at peak of his powers. Sensational footballer.

Brilliant. It's so easy to lose track of how different, relatively more vertical and more exciting Barca was in the 08/09 season and Spain in the Euros 08 before the full blown tiki taka nonsense.

A snippet from the Kicker magazine

Horst Szymaniak was a technically outstanding left half who was very good at precise long passes but at the same time was a specialist tackler (his tackling was known as ‘Schimmi tackle’), impressing with his stamina and commitment. At a time when most players were either offensive or defensive specialists, Szymaniak was considered a complete midfielder because he was a specialist for both offense and defense. Ever since his debut for Germany in November 1956 aged 22, Szymaniak was a starter for the national team. Astonishingly, when Szymaniak left Germany in 1961 to play in Italy, Sepp Herberger didn’t drop him from the national team but continued to call him up, such was Herberger's esteem of Szymaniak.

"Football is played eleven against eleven but as I went off four opponents then it's eleven against seven." - Faas Wilkes

"I admired two players; one was Alfredo Di Stefano, who knew all about how to open spaces up on the pitch. The other was Faas Wilkes, a great dribbler." - Johan Cruijff

Not Sammer's finest game and well no shame in that given that it was against Baggio of all people. Nonetheless, he played a great assist for Dortmund's opener.

An interesting performance — somehow Eusébio, who isn't having his best game, still managed to score three goals (an older Cristiano is quite famous for those paradoxical performances). Footage quality is just insane for 1965

Wasn't too long ago that someone was questioning whether Baggio would have been able to smoothly transition into the modern game with the decline of the classic #10 role.

Really doubt that would have been the case though. It didn't matter if he played alongside a conventional centre forward (Schillachi), or on the left of a forward trio, in the hole behind 2 CFs (Ravanelli & Vialli), in a forward duo in a 4-4-2 (along Savicevic or Weah) or the right in a forward trio (Kolyvanov & Andersson), he really knew how to tailor his playing style and his movement on the pitch to maximize his talents and those of this teammates.

Never really appreciated the tactical nous of Baggio's and perhaps I've been guilty of underrating his playmaking prowess and decision making. On the other hand, I do think I've overrated his dribbling ability, or at least the frequency with which he utilized it.

Classic Savicevic - sublime ball control, dribbling and incisiveness, with the propensity to occasionally drift out of games. His movement off the ball, esp on the counter was brilliant though, and Parma's defense struggled to cope with that.

I just love him so much! Sexy knees indeed.

Inter were down to 10 men after the first 10 minutes — Ferri decided to literally kick Allofs' ass and got sent off, but that didn't stop them. Rummenigge worked his ass off defensively & scored 2 brilliantly taken goals near the end of the game, winning it for nerazzuri.

That Köln side was quite impressive, by the way — Schumacher, Littbarski, Allofs... they also got a bit unlucky by hitting the post twice, but they should've done better with the numerical advantage anyway.

@Joga Bonito I know you're a fan :)

Such a lovely player who combined wonderful flair & impressive grit. I loved how many times he & Rummenigge actually battled directly one another.

Was surprised to see the lack of compilations on this guy. He was playing in a relatively higher defensive line as opposed to that European Cup QF game against Milan where he was much more deeper.

And they compare him with TAA. Pfft....

He was 21 here playing as a RWB, mind you.

Beckham who?

Seriously though, an insane performance by Bobby Charlton — he ran around in a true box-to-box fashion (one of the most energetic performances that I've seen of him) and he set up three (3!!) goals from corners. In the words of the man himself:
Sir Bobby said:
Well, corners are easy, you know — nobody's challenging you!

Amazing ball control and balance on that excuse of a pitch  . Some of his passes were  too and the unmistakable graft to go along with it all. Sheer class as always.

How did Mackay get on in this fixture btw?

Absolutely bloody brilliant. Scored a fantastic free kick to put Derby 1:0 up, then they've scored again after another one of his free kicks. Generally he played in a sweeper/CB role and was weirdly impressive for a defender of a team that conceded 4 goals. Top notch passing and one of his tackles on Fitzpatrick was world-class, I have no idea how he managed to cover all that space & even retain control of the ball after the tackle. All that at 36 years old & while being clearly overweight (he himself admits it in their discussion with Sir Bobby, but even without it it's quite visible).

I have to say, he's one of the most impressive players from my latest 60's binge. I knew that he was very good, but didn't expect him to stand out in every game, oozing confidence, making crunching tackles & passing the ball around with surprising accuracy. He's obviously a more defensive player by nature but based on those head to head games you really wouldn't think that he's a lesser player than, say, Charlton himself.

Amazing. Just a shame how there's so little full match footage of him, although there's a fair bit of the 45-60 min highlight footage lying about. Perhaps I should check out more of them.

Not the best Keano game you will ever see but one short spell of dominance secured a famous comeback, reckon this was the game where Keano ended the Vieira debate. Funnily though if you take game as a whole you could probably argue that both Scholes and Fletcher(was absolutely brilliant) had better games.
Bergkamp was class for Arsenal alongside Vieira, Henry was quiet.

Such an entertaining nutter  . Taking the mickey out of the opposition with his dribbling, throwing tantrums and those outside of the boot passes .

Oh he was playing without shin pads and with low socks @Jim Beam
