I've not been up to Old Trafford often since I've moved away, but now I'm at the point I want to take my daughter along for the first time (probably to a preseason game). It's going to be a very long day for her and I'm sure she's going to struggle a bit with tiredness throughout the day.

The last few times I've been I've used official match day parking, but if I remember correctly, both times I was stuck for nearly an hour after the game trying to get out of the car park. Is this still the normal experience? Way way back I paid on the day to park in one of the office car parks on the quays and walked over the bridge and I'm sure something like that is still possible, but I'm not sure if that walk for an already knackered six year old would be too much.

Any thoughts?

Pretty much.

The further you park away from the ground the easier it is. We park on the industrial estates East of the ground which is quicker to get away via the M60 than is was when we used to park near the Tollgate.

We park here, have done since getting our ST 20 years ago (hopefully the link works) it's £5 and 15 minutes from the stadium.

Depending what direction you're heading to after the game, you can go through to the TC then straight onto the motorway.

I used to park up in the industrial estate, all the roads have got American sounding names (fifth street, etc). It’s quiet even on match day but you have to pay RingGo parking. Short walk to the ground.

THat's exactly where we park. Stop at the Six Trees so the little man can play pool before the game. With the football this season I'm not sure which part of the day he prefers

Trafford Centre or Parkway park and ride are my usual ones, free parking and a cheap tram family ticket.

Quick to get to OT on the tram, and if you’re leaving a few minutes early it’s a quick tram back as well. Easy to get back onto M60 from there depending on where you’re going back to.

Depending on which way you’re coming from, you could park in Altrincham and catch the tram. It’s what we do and other than queuing for the tram on the way back, you’re normally fine for traffic.

On a related note...

Taking in a six year old on a hot day, I'd normally expect to take a small rucksack with me for all the things they might need. Never needed to take a bag into Old Trafford before. What are the rules? Can I even take a childrens water bottle?

Are the rules different for a friendly instead of a premier league match?

You need a clear bag.
Unlikely they'll let you take in a water bottle.

Edit to this, you can take a bottle with the top removed.

They might be more relaxed for a friendly & generally more lenient for kids, but officially there is a certain size of bag that's allowed in - check online for details

You can take a water bottle but they might take the lid off you

If you are heading down south after the game (noticed your location) then I'd recommend parking off the A56/Chester Road as it's straight onto the M60 from there. There is free parking about 20/25 minute walk away on Davyhulme Road but there's also car parks closer towards the stadium on Chester Road and near the OT Cricket Stadium (not official car parks though), then it's less walking for your daughter.
