Camavinga's quality was never in question, no? It's his availability and injury record that mean to him not being that fancied.

Anyway don't want to detract too much from the subject of the thread being Mateus Fernandes.

INEOS have been far from perfect, but most of their mistakes were made early on, they have also done quite a lot of good, they built a new training complex, which the Glazers had neglected since they arrived in 2004, they made a lot of questionable cutbacks but the finances are now starting to improve, many poor players on high wages have now left the club and more and continuing to do so.

The summer transfer window was a huge success, all the signings have been good, the club managed to get 3rd place and a vital CL spot for the extra income to allow for more team improvements.

They are starting to do most things right.
Ineos has been a mix of some great decisions and some spectacular feck ups of epic proportions (Amorim, Ashworth, going full austerity on workers who are often on minimum wage etc). All I am saying is that we can't sort every issue with predictable overpriced talent everyone know about. The money is simply not there. We need to trust our guts more and think out of the box. The most frustrating thing is that when we put our minds to it we had shown that we can. Lammens and Dorgu had been excellent signings

For him, coming to United where he can play at the highest level will mean he will have a chance to be with Portuguese NT that's is stacked in CM

Why are you so convinced we won’t be trying to make signings like that too? Last summer we signed some “predictable overpriced talent everyone know about“ as well as some “out of the box” signings. It seems to be a very deliberate ploy - mixing lower risk, more proven signings for higher fees along with lesser known talents. We obviously don’t want to spend big on every player and are actively looking for value in the market in some areas.

Also worth remembering that some of the best signings in our history have been pretty obvious, well known PL talent bought for big fees. If they turn out to be good who the hell cares if they were well known or cost a bit.

Good noise so far. He is good already, think people sometimes forget that he is only 21 and will going to improve further. I think the plan was trying for the most prove ones in Anderson and Tchuoameni. Those two are the most proven but also difficult to get too. United plan is to see if we can sneak in Anderson head and convince him, once that is not the case, we step away. Fernandes I think is a must now. After, Scott would be great too or an outlier from French league. Fernandes and Scott has all the ingredients too succeed in the future. They are both at the curse of explode to become a very good and have chance to be world class in a few years. Camavinga is also would be a good speculation if we can make sure our medical department can ease and improve his availability. The talents is there no question.

If we were doing that then we would be bidding right now to get those players. It would act as a leverage against clubs who are asking silly money for the likes of Fernandes and Scott. This is not just about transfers but also how we operate. We're so damn slow. Even the Ederson deal has yet to be completed, Meanwhile we're still 'preparing a bid' for Fernandes whatever that means. Not to forget that silly 'we want Eliot Anderson' propaganda that dragged for months only to end up with an egg on our face as we learnt that we can't even afford him. That's naive and amateur

Regarding the past SAF implemented a mix of transfer strategies which included cheap punts (ex Johnsen, Ole, Schmeichel, Vidic, Evra etc), old short term fixes (Larson, Owen, Goram etc), solid PL talent that offered value (Carrick, Valencia, Young etc) and the occasional breaking the bank for a young talent whom he was dead cert that they'll turn up amazing (Rio, Keane, Rooney). The highlighted part is key here. For example he humiliated Leeds for spending 18m on Rio Ferdinand because he wasn't sure the potential justified the fee. Few years later he had no problem eating ample humble pie by spending almost double to get him out of Leeds. That's because he had confirmed that he's going to be elite.

I very much doubt that SAF would entertain breaking the bank for the likes of Maguire and AWB as we did as much as I doubt he'd spend 80m for the likes of Scott and Fernandes who are good but who are nowhere near to a Rio, a Rooney or a Keano.

Get a grip man, it’s June FFS and the PL transfer window hasn’t even opened yet. Is this your first transfer window? Things take time. Signings happen over the course of the whole summer. That is perfectly normal for all clubs, and you can never properly judge a window until it’s closed.

You’re also falling into the trap of using hindsight when comparing previous signings to prospective ones. It’s easy to look back and pick out he success stories and say this signing was a dead cert or that one was guaranteed. But all signings are a risk. None are guaranteed to work.

It still early days but you can notice signs of concern even at this point. If things change then my opinion will change as well. Please note that this is a forum not a court of law. We're in a virtual version of discussing football in a pub.

PS: It was evident from day 1 that the likes of Ronaldo, Rooney, Rio and Keane were going to be a massive success. An 18 year old Ronaldo decimated our defense in a friendly game to a point that our own defenders went begging to SAF to sign him up

No, I really don’t. We’re prioritizing CMs, which I find reassuring because that’s our most obvious weakness. We also seem to be targeting CMs who are mobile, physically well suited to the league, and technically proficient. Again, I find that fairly reassuring. It also seems like we’ll address other areas of weakness at some stage in the window. So no, i’m not remotely concerned in mid June. If we haven’t reinforced the squad sufficiently come late August, then I’ll be a little concerned.

Yeah if we could get Camavinga for like £30M-40M that would be a steal, but you know RM is going to look for double that from PL teams even with his shitty injury record

I prefer Anderson to Fernandes but not if is 65M compared to 130million (rough figures).

If we get Ederson, Fernandes and somebody like Scott that would be a brilliant window for the midfield.

But Fernandes and Scott have also both shown themselves to be physically capable of competing in the PL.
One has been relegated in consecutive seasons, the other plays for Bournemouth. This is Manchester United a huge step up.
Not to mention Vitinha only managed to excel once he left the physically demanding PL for a piss poor one team league.
Good point.

His quality is in question actually. He's far too inconsistent and hasn't really improved as a player since 5 years ago. Yes, the injuries are by far the main issue and the easiest explanation for the former, but still

See the "Pizza charts are lying liars who lie" axiom from my previous post

To me, this is a real X/Twitter way of arguing someone isn’t a top footballer. Crap players win trophies too, it isn’t indicative of much at all.

I couldn’t give the slightest toss about the relegation thing - football is a team game and he played for two poor teams. Keane was relegated with Forest and it didn’t make a damn bit of difference to how he did with us.

You never know if any player will cope with the pressure here, but knowing they can cope physically with the league removes one element of risk at least.

Camavinga hasn’t progressed as he should have. Rather stay away from him. He looks like a Spurs kinda player

I don’t get the Camavinga love at all myself, completely wrong trajectory and fairly injury prone. Would take him on a free and that’s it I think.

Would be very happy if we get him , looks a quality player with a high ceiling.

Excelled in a poor team this season , of course as we know too well that does not automatically transfer when a player comes from a smaller club to a massive club. It is as much about attitude and the character traits to be able to handle that transition. These are things we don't really know if they have them until they start playing for us.

I guess interest from other clubs may cool now its clear that the desperate position Westr Ham were in has eased, at least in the short term. Reason being I think some clubs might have thought a real steal was possible in terms of cost, whereas now its becoming obvious the price he will probably go for isn't quite in the "so low its worth a punt" level anymore and only those who are really interested will step forward.

I have been a fan of him since he was at Rennes, would still like to add alongside this guy after World Cup

I thought (regardless of wealth) he was limited to injection cap of 15m?
