Mateus Fernandes | Spurs player

Surely, it will depend on who goes after him and how much they offer. I don't think West Ham will make a loss on their original outlay either, but if they get relegated they might be pressured to sell and he is one of the few valuable players they have who can be sacrificed to make up for the drop in revenue They will need some money to re-invest in the squad too. I'm also guessing, with suitors from the EPL, Fernandes will not want to spend a year in the Championship, so if West Ham start playing too much hardball they may end up with a rebellious player too. They will want to avoid that.

My guess It could be somewhere in the 50-70m range IMO.
Yeah would definitely consider that a quality price, when Anderson inevitably confirms he is joining City we simply have to make this guy our big signing this summer.

Fernandes and a DM who can pass well would be perfect. Like Mainoo he would stand out as someone who has time not be ball - something we sorely lack.

Mateus is a decent player but I hope that the club would do some serious HW before signing him. Unlike most CM linked he's not a no 6/no 8 hybrid. He's more of a no 8 and no 10 hybrid which makes him the most attacking minded of the lot. That comes with perks for example a better long passing rate and a better dribble rate then the rest. However it also come with weaknesses as well. If we're determined to play him in the midfield base then him out of the lot will need a top quality no 6 the most. This is not about him not putting a shift in cause he did. His defensive contributions are off the charts. It's about him thinking and acting more like an attacking minded player then the rest. That means that someone needs to be at his back mopping and making sure that he doesn't over commit. That shouldn't deter us. Scholes was far more attacking minded that Mateus was and he turned up becoming the best deep playing playmaker the EPL had ever seen. But for that to happen he needed Keane. Mateus will need an experienced DM at his back.
I think your concerns are justified because we made the same error with DVB, we bought him as a Bruno back up who could reportedly play 8 and 6 but he failed at any of the roles so correct profiling is paramount. However, age will eventually catch up with Bruno and chances are high that we could find it impossible or too expensive to replace Bruno like for like and end up transitioning to a 4-3-3 so a player like him - who can hold his own in CM but has attacking and technical abilities make him a unique profile for whom you need to pounce on the opportunity to sign. We need 3 CMs, we should sign the needed DM, no negotiations on that, but he has to be one of the 3 and if need be then we scout the continent or South America for a cheaper 3rd midfield signing.

West Ham bought him for 42m and we think we're just going to cruise in and poach him on the cheap.
Love the redcafe optimism.
He was signed for £38m + 4m in add ons, unless they were appearance fees I can't see them being achieved if they get relegated.

I think he will be something along the lines of £50m rising to £60m if they get relegated.

Is it just me that thinks Fernandes is a better player than Anderson?
It could be.
I cannot really say as I do not watch West Ham or Forest on a regular basis but I will definitely watch the Hammers last two games.

As soon as/if they get relegated I’m sure there will be reports of West Ham demanding £80m for him. I don’t know where all these optimistic prices of £40m are coming from. There’s never been any evidence of a release clause.

You can just see it coming.

If there's no relegation clause West Ham can realistically charge what they want. We'd have to rely on Fernandes kicking up a fuss to leave. Combine that with the fact he's going to the World Cup, this could end up dragging out till the end of the window and that's the last thing we need

We did the same mistake with Mason Mount as well. I understand the club's POV. We're increasingly having to play against teams with a 6-7 defensive minded players in a low block. That requires United to be able to commit loads of bodies forward who are able to exploit every little space given to them. A stereotypical no 6 is pretty useless in such circumstances. However it's also true that 6 attacking minded players are pretty useless if they are constantly being out muscled and pushed in their own half. Hence why a balance needs to be reached. Finding the right balance was one of the things SAF was amazing in and he wasn't scared of putting Pogba on the bench and Cleverley on the pitch to achieve that.

Quite frankly I would go for Mateus Fernandes. He's a young hardworking no 8 whose skillset and versatility allows him to cover the no 10 role and even the left flank if needed. What like any other player he comes with his set of weaknesses that needs to be mitigated. A tchouameni/Berge, Mateus and Bruno CM would be elite. It brings the right balance between workrate, pace, height, experience, technique and passing ability. It also prepares us for the future as Mainoo would transition as a no 8 and Mateus as a no 10.

It's worth mentioning that Roy Keane (as far as I can recall) is the only player in P.L history that has been sold from a relegated team at a really high transfer fee (at the time of transfer). Only 3 players have ever been sold for over £40 million - and I dont even count Mitrovic as he was sold to the middle East.

So it's Romeo Lavia at £58 million and Raphinha at £55 million to Barcelona - and I would claim that they were more sought after than Mateus Fernandes was. So I would say a realistic price if he goes down is just short of £50 million. You also need to take into account that West Ham need to raise a LOT of money if they get relegated, they are not in a position of strength in a negotiation - especially if we are the only big club who are interested in him

There isn't going to be a bidding war on the transfer if West Ham goes down, which looks likely.
He'll then have a release clause, and clubs will offer different wage structures and roles in their project.

Perfectly reasonable to say that United has a decent chance at getting him either way.
For example, at PSG he would be 4th choice, while at United he would be part of a group aiming to establish the pecking order.

Being a big fan of Bruno is also an advantage for the team. United has a good history with Portugese players as well.

What's this based on?

I hope he's the real deal and not another Schneiderlin. Hard to tell with midfielders - you get away with a lot at smaller clubs.

Not take the time to verify it, but based on the amount of people making the claim, i assume it to be correct.

Going by memory, people mentioned a release around 40-45 million if they get relegated.

I can do a checkup on the claim when i am home again, if you want.

Mateus Fernandes himself has already been sold after relegation for quite a lot of money. I would be surprised if they look to make very minimal profit on him but I don't know any in depth analysis of their financial situation. Either way I can't imagine they need to fire sale for cheap enough to rip themselves off.

Nah thats ok just wanted to know whether you have seen any thing credible because I don't think I have , And considering West Ham paid Like 38 m for him even if any Clause exists I don't believe it would 40-45 m.

His agent is big bad Mendes, right? So anyone thinking this won’t be a transfer with all sorts of shenanigans that benefit Mendes, hasn’t really followed Mendes and his antics. For example, a common mistake people make on here is thinking PSG got Joao Neves for cheap or that he was available to anyone but oil clubs once PSG got involved. The reality was they paid for him in a lump sum (no real club would entertain that) plus they gave Benfica Renato Sanches for 12 months so they could at least tide over without spending anything.

PSG are said to be after Fernandes, if they are, it’s likely game over for everyone but City unless the player makes it clear he wants to go elsewhere.

I really hope we’re at the table and prepared to pay a fair price for him because you can bet other clubs will be. I don’t know what our current relationship is with Mendes, but he’ll surely have a big role to play in where this client goes. *We* definitely don’t want him going to the World Cup and shining.

Probably already quoted but Athletic confirmed PSG interest.

It's very rare for us to get away with a sensible fee.
And bearing in mind people seem to think he's a rotational mid, not the vital Casemiro starter replacement, it's how much money we actually have to spend.

A starter probably is 80m and this fella 50-60m. And suddenly that's an insane amount.

Then we'll have people reckoning we'll get 150m in sales, when it'll probably be about 50m by the time Barce skank us for Rashford and other deals become loans etc.

Along the lines of 'why can we never have the good things' thoughts...why is it that certain clubs get to hoard all the best technical midfielders? First it used to be City and now it's PSG.

Bloody PSG get Neves ahead of us and are now after his the next most similar player.

Athletic confirm, no relegation release clause. 15% sell on fee for Southampton. West Ham expect to make an profit on him. Plus lots of interest from european clubs.

Because we seem to have strange aversion to technical players in general its just more pronounced in midfield , we tend not go all out for them and give up quite easily when faced with any competition .

So at bare minmum, they will expect above £55m. I think £65-70m is going to be a reasonable fee, all things considered.

Mitrovic was at Fulham and forced his exit, they finished midtable.
Maddison to Spurs, Ake to City spring to mind who were at least £40m, there might be others.
Lavia was a high fee as it was Chelsea vs Pool bidding each other up. I think Fernandes is more sought after than Lavia though, I think a lot of clubs want him so I agree with the reasoning. I can't see him being less than £60m. I guess we might use Collyer as a sweetener given he wants gametime and has done well in the Championship. or maybe they want Onana

In the end I'll give INEOS some credit where it's due: recent signings haven't been stupid at the moment of signing. Unlike the previous regime.

If a player who has played a lot in a team that literally got relegated is going for absurd fees a sensible option is just to walk away.

He's not perfect, so if PSG price us out then that's totally fine. Other than them, no one in Europe will have the funds to get close to prices people are talking about.

I think the fact he started his career further forward is always a good plus point. Technical game a bit more refined and has some understanding of working in tighter spaces
