Mateus Fernandes | Spurs player

Mitrovic was at Fulham and forced his exit, they finished midtable.
Maddison to Spurs, Ake to City spring to mind who were at least £40m, there might be others.
Lavia was a high fee as it was Chelsea vs Pool bidding each other up. I think Fernandes is more sought after than Lavia though, I think a lot of clubs want him so I agree with the reasoning. I can't see him being less than £60m. I guess we might use Collyer as a sweetener given he wants gametime and has done well in the Championship. or maybe they want Onana

Both Ake and Maddison were reported as £40 million. Lavia was wanted by many clubs after a great season - and he was just 19 at the time. 2 of the 4 best teams in the P.L made offers for him - so yeah, he was highly desired.

We need to use that as our trump card, will be so fecked off if we lose out PSG for another Portuguese midfielder. Prioritise this guy over absolutely anyone else because Tchouameni is dragging feet

Every team will be interested. He is very good hence I would push to make him the first signing

I would like him but I don't see it as it'd be a 60m fee to compete with Mainoo basically. Yes we need competition there but there are other big clubs that he could have a more straightforward path, either transitioning in for an older player to take over, while both him and Mainoo are young.

So unless we get a manager like Luis Enrique long term who knows how to make the 2 work together in tandem, then I'd guess they'll just compete for the same spot. Not a very attractive role for someone like him IMO.

He's going to be around £65mil. West Ham have to pay Southampton 15% and make a profit. They would have to give Southampton £9.75mil. Dropping their amount down to £55mil. Giving them around £13mil profit.

If they sold him for £55mil. Southampton get £8.25mil. West Ham make a 4.75mil profit.

That's why I think he will go more towards £65mil. Especially given the amount of interest in him.

Think the main thing United can offer is a genuine shot at the first team. Those positions are completely up for grabs.

But them going down puts them in a weak position. Lets see

What’s wrong with having options? Fernandes can also play as a 6. We also have to start thinking long term. Once Bruno’s power starts to decrease, we will most likely have to go 2 8s and 1 6 route.

These clause work on profit they make, 15% of the profit, not on total fee.

If we move to a 433 after Bruno, there'll be space to accommodate them both.

Eh I think he has a better shot at it elsewhere if we're being honest. Say we compete with Arsenal - his competition for a starting spot is Zubimendi. Nothing special, not a long term starter, not necessarily really young with big potential. Just a body.

At United, he's competing with Mainoo. United academy product, 21 year old top talent who is our present and future (as Casemiro likes describing him). If he's looking this year, next year, 3 or 5 years down the line, the situation is the same. He's competing with Mainoo. The exception to that is if we change our system post Bruno and we do a midfield 3 with Mainoo, this Fernandes, and a deeper midfielder like Baleba or Tchouameni or Anderson. But you aren't putting Mateus, Mainoo and Bruno as your midfield 3 successfully unless you've got Luis Enrique as manager if we're honest

If he's doing to become expensive then we spoke move on. I'm not convinced about him to be honest.

That's a big if though. And a big question of when. "After Bruno"... He's 31 and at his peak right now. If we compare him to somebody like Modric, Modric played his best football after 30 and only declined in late 30s. I honestly don't think there's anything to suggest Bruno is anywhere close to declining, he's a freak athlete and I would sooner guess he has a Modric type career arc where he keeps this level for another 3/4/5 years rather than him decline now.

As of now and for the immediate future, Bruno is our best player.

These clause work on profit they make, 15% of the profit, not on total fee.

Even then based on amortisation they still need to make £30m to break even. I’m sure even based on their financial losses and the interest in him. They will try to milk as much money as they can get. I can see him costing £60m plus.

If United are spending £60 m on him than be rest assured He would be given more than fair chance to establish himself in the first team and then its upto him to Prove his worth .

And if he doesnt even fancy his chances against Mainoo then I don't believe he is right player for us anyway .

Zubimendi is not his competition, he's primarily a deeper lying midfielder. Fernandes is more of box to box type. At Arsenal, his competition would be Rice, who he sure isn't getting past any time soon, given how important Rice is their style. Plus they have also Lewis-Skelly and Merino in the squad, who had credit in the bank.

United meanwhile have 1 midfielder in the squad (assuming Ugarte leaves, as seems likely) and that midfielder is talented but hardly the complete player. And no-one else. Even if United buy 2 more midfielders, they're no more proven at United than he.

Well, we never sign this kind of midfielder anyways. Being technical, press resistant is an afterthought for us.

I don’t see him going to Arsenal. PSG could be a real threat, considering the number of Portuguese players they have.

Moreso I don't think the club will drop that much money on someone in Mainoos role, who is earmarked to be our long term starter there.

I know some weirdos don't like Mainoo. But it's not living in reality to think we'll spend massive money on someone who we would expect would bench Mainoo. Not really how you build a team. The club sees him as a long term key player, so the #1 priority is on his partner and then #2 is on depth who can partner either one of Mainoo or that partner. So for every midfielder we are linked with, the #1 question should be: can he partner Mainoo? If that's a no, I doubt we'll sign them.

I think 60m is reasonable for him. Still very young… can improve and become one of the best.

I still think we'll get him but now feel West Ham are going to make us bend over backwards. Overall ~60m I'm happy, but hopefully not an 80m transfer. But in a window where Anderson's going to go for 100m+ who knows?

I don't think Arsenal / PSG are willing to pay >60m for him either.

If United can get this guy for a decent fee, it would be the perfect first signing. Could act as a good benchmark when negotiating for other midfielders later in the window.

£60m upfront is a big fee, that's basically Semenyo and Mbuemo levels and they are premium positions. I think it's ok if that's the total with add ons and we're around £50m upfront but not as a flat fee.

I'm going to stick my neck out. He is going to be top 5 CM in the world pretty soon with his next move.

We really need to start trusting our scouts and buck the trend of waiting until they prove themselves in the PL before buying them.

I really want us to sign Fernandes, but I feel West ham are going to be looking for £70-75m now.

What about the 25m release clause we keep hearing about if he they go down ?

Wasn't the reason we started buying proven PL talent exactly because we kept on buying players from other leagues which we scouted and our success rate was terrible?

How many dozens of players do you think the wider scouting team recommend?

Never heard of £25m. Its obviously bs when Southampton have a 15% sell on.

I highly doubt that. Our signings under ten Hag were mainly his recommendations.

A lot more than we hear about.
