Have felt for the last few weeks this was just waiting until July started to make an official move. Likely due to new financial year. Expecting we'll know one way or the other where he's going in the next 1-2 weeks.

Really? I've not seen every tweet so its possible I missed it but since hell froze over with that Spurs ITK 6 days ago sounds like Spurs have been matching West Hams valuation for 6 days now, since then its gone a little quiet on Spurs end. As I said I could be wrong.

Wheeler said Sunday we're locked in talks with West Ham, Times said we're in talks but refusing to match the 80mil and Ornstein said today we're still in talks with West Ham.

We don't actually have to wait until tomorrow to make a bid, do we? It's when the deal is closed that matter for financial reporting not when the bid is submitted.
 
If we assume Mazraoui and Dalot are capable of covering both full-back positions, Dorgu can comfortably play in three different roles, and Mount can deputise for Bruno while also providing energy as a No. 8 for the final 15–20 minutes or against lower-table opposition, then our absolute minimum requirement this summer is still two midfielders.

Even then that wouldn’t be enough to make us genuine contenders. We’d simply be covering the bare essentials rather than building a complete squad.

We need to sell in a best case scenario Zirkzee, Rashford, Vitek and a couple of academy graduates if we want 3 quality midfielders. I can realistically see us operating with a transfer budget somewhere between £150–250 million, depending on how many deals we actually get over the line and on what terms.

This is exactly why I don’t think we can afford to overpay for Fernandes—or anyone else, for that matter. An ideal deal would be around £65–70 million guaranteed, spread over at least three years, with sensible performance-related add-ons.

That still represents a substantial investment while leaving enough flexibility to strengthen other key areas of the squad.

To focus solely on the transfer fee gives us only half of the deal. The payment structure, installments, add-ons and cash flow can be just as important as the final price. Get the structure right and you might be able to sign three top players instead of two. Get it wrong, and you end up limiting your own options for the rest of the window.
 
I wonder what our game is here, it keeps being reported that Spurs are willing to offer more money than us so we could end up wasting all this time for nothing and look daft. That said if they are willing to give West Ham what they want why haven’t they made an offer yet? Hopefully reaches a conclusion soon one way or another, it’s getting very boring now.
 
Very boring saga for sure. Maybe the most boring in recent memory which is funny because he's such a cracking player potentially. Everyone is totally jaded with the media, even the reliable ones milking the daylights out of it without there being any actual news for nearly 2 months. The club is moving at a snails place and after everything we may still lose out to spurs. Kinda takes almost any of the remaining excitement out of it

It just isn’t a saga and that’s….not a bad thing? It still seems quite obvious we’re signing him. I don’t really need it to be a drama. People have tried to make it into one.
 
We might have to pay top dollar if we want him as Spurs seem determined to back De Zerbi and are minted at the moment. It seems like Fernandes is open to joining either club, so we’ll need to match Spurs at least.
 
He better be worth it after all this fuss. I’m not seeing much in the player as many as most of the Caf are and certainly not at that price

I'm presuming we would be looking at players in italy - France etc>

If we match the bid, he's coming here no problem. Spurs I think will be happy with either of Tonali or Fernandes. Tonali will probably be more expensive of the two and it's unclear if Newcastle will even sell.

I feel the Anderson tax has added 20% to every single player. Diomande went from 100m -> 130m -> 150m now. But given we have all of one midfielder right now, I think we need to pay the tax unless Vivell really knocks it out of the park with a Camara or Boudadi or Stiller type signing.

We may but its highly unlikely and Luckhurst knows shit about what United are planning and he works for Sun not Telegraph.

Don't think it makes much difference - there was always a significant chance we weren't going to be able to sell him for a good fee and he'd go on loan anyway. With the WC insurance covering his wages, we're basically in the same financial position now as we would have been then. We'll still spend big on CM.

You never know, I think we'd have got something out of the Turkish clubs.

I think we're worse off with the injury than even him going out on loan. Going out on loan meant loan fee (which would have offset his depreciation in transfer value) and wages covered, the injury means wages covered and we have the take the depreciation in transfer value on the chin.

Bouadi is going to be 80M and for that price Lille still expect the buyer to loan him back to them for a season so I don't see that as an option for us. I am keen on Stiller who would certainly be affordable and I think is underrated due to the terrible success rate of Bundesliga imports lately although Sesko should give us hope there. I also think we should be looking a lot more closely at Kone as Roma are willing sellers and he is an absolute steal at the prices being quoted.

You can't seriously be giving any credence to a Samuel Luckhurst report!! I think I trust Stone and Ornstein more who have reported just today that we are still very much going for Fernandes with Stone even suggesting a bid is imminent.

We're slightly worse off financially, sure. Enough to fundamentally change our main transfer plans? I just don't think so. We will still spend big on midfield because we have to.

One thing it has done is eliminate the risk of Ugarte being our fourth CM this season.

I agree, if they actually did have raising money for Ugarte as part of the plan, it would have been foolish beyond belief. I think it's all part of pleading poverty and we'll still spend big.

True, but conversely, it's also significantly lowered the amount we're ever going to get for him. He might end up like one of the loan warriors until his contract expires, which is far from ideal.

Isn't that opposite of what the tweet said? It says at the end we're still in for Fernandes, and also he fits the mold of a young, good, high potential player so he's exactly the type we're targeting

Yeah, that last point is probably pretty likely at this stage. However, I'm not sure his WC performances so far had done much anyway in terms of sticking him in the shop window, and that was always a real risk. That's what you get for poorly scouted and thought out signings.
