He should be one of the two or three IMO, Ugarte out and him in gives us good options in the midfield.

If psg want him it’s probably over, but maybe United have a shot if they are aggressive and quick to offer an acceptable transfer fee and wage package.

If those cnuts sign Fernandes we need to lodge a significant bid for Zaire-Emery the very same day.

In the words of the great Boris Johnson:

‘Let’s get this thing done!’.

His idols bruno apparently and his preferred move us is or so I've read (could be low reliability though)

I hope we go quick and get him before the World Cup start. Bruno is his idol and I'm sure he would love to pair up with him. Just get Bruno give him a call and get it done

How much did Mbuemo and Cunha cost?

This kid has got more years left in the tank then either of those and is being chased by PSG and Arsenal, no doubt Chelsea will try to get involved too, and who knows about Mourinho at Real Madrid?

If there's no release clause it will be about £70m. He's easily as good as Rice at the same age, albeit with different strengths and weaknesses.

Every team will be interested. He is very good hence I would push to make him the first signing
Yeah prioritise him and Tchouameni, if the latter is another De Jong situation then pull trigger on Baleba

I've watched him live a few times this year. He's a good player, will he reach the very top I don't know.

In the game we played West Ham at London Stadium he was all over Bruno, and Bruno didn't like it. For me that's a good sign.

I do think we should sign him, but a partnership of him and Mainoo might be a bit lightweight.

I don’t see him going to Arsenal. PSG could be a real threat, considering the number of Portuguese players they have.
Yeah hoping he doesn't make Portugal squad as would give Neves and Vitinha chance to get in his ear

Ederson and M. Fernandes would be ideal. If we move Ugarte and Collyer on, I'd go for Kees Smit as well.
Good options.

I could see Smit being a perfect partner for a Baleba. Both mobile and will cover distance with Smit being the transitional CM.

I'm not quite sure where Ederson or Fernandes fit in, who would they play with in the midfield partnership?

The only partnerships I can think would suit is Baleba and Smit, or Baleba and Mainoo.

Could either Ederson or Fernandes be the CDM rather than the CM? Ederson in my mind would compete with the Mainoo/Smit position as the CM. However I think we need to sign 2 CDMs, and one CM to compete with Mainoo.

I lean towards Baleba and Palinha from Spurs for CDM and Smit as the CM.

Yeah still need a DM whether it's Tchouameni or Baleba

Moreso I don't think the club will drop that much money on someone in Mainoos role, who is earmarked to be our long term starter there.

I know some weirdos don't like Mainoo. But it's not living in reality to think we'll spend massive money on someone who we would expect would bench Mainoo. Not really how you build a team. The club sees him as a long term key player, so the #1 priority is on his partner and then #2 is on depth who can partner either one of Mainoo or that partner. So for every midfielder we are linked with, the #1 question should be: can he partner Mainoo? If that's a no, I doubt we'll sign them.
Thats just your opinion nobody actually knows what the Club really thinks , I don't rate Mainoo that highly and Don't think Club should plan their midfield additions with him as a Starter either .

I also definitely see United bringing in two Big money Midfielders but unlike you I don't see that as judgement on Mainoo future here but just sound planning and then its upto those players to earn playing time .

Who are the two big money midfielders you reckon we are going to sign then. I think if this guy receives a call from his idol it could prove decisive in our favour. Would be such a coup if he prioritised us over PSG and Arsenal, much like Anderson seems to have done with City.

I think we Will most probably get Baleba for anything between 55-70 m and one of Fernandes or Scott as other Midfielder .

Woudnt rule out third signing either depending on outgoings.

Yeah think third signing hinges on selling Ugarte

Hasnt Baleba been crap this season? Why are we paying huge money for a not so good not very experienced DM?

Because Utd clearly see potential, maybe him picking up form all of a sudden is to keep us interested

Not rating Mainoo highly is weird.

But also - my point is our #1 priority will be his partner. That's where the bulk of the money will go. I doubt we are spending 60-80m on the 2nd midfielder.

It's clear what the club thinks on Mainoo. From the way everyone talks about him, players & staff, to his new contract - he's the future here. I'm pretty confident that he'll one day be our future captain even. So the top priority for our midfield is getting that holding midfielder and player that can partner him. Even if you look at our squad, we can use Mount to backup Mainoo, we can push Bruno deeper instead of Mainoo. We need a Tchouameni and the 2nd guy can be Baleba to backup Tchouameni. That to me would make sense as a pair of signings to be honest.

Mainoo shouldn't be treated any differently than any of our other players. If we buy two new midfielders (Ederson and M. Fernandes lets say) and they outperform Mainoo, then so be it.

Agree to disagree let's revisit this once the Summer window closes .

Only thing we can agree upon is United would definitely buy atleast two midfielders and if United buy likes of Fernandes or Scott for Circa 60 m would that change your opinion about Mainoo's standing at the Club .

Mainoo is a better player than them for me and I'd see that as spending 60m on squad players basically. Don't see it happening but who knows. We did spend 70m on Mbeumo who is now a squad player already (and we do need numbers). All I'm saying is that Mainoo is going to be the starter and that that's how people inside the club see him.

If they think Scott & Mainoo or Fernandes and Mainoo will be a balanced partnership, then I'm worried about them not understanding midfield balance. If we prioritize Tchouameni, then I'm relaxed whatever the case.

Potential mostly and United's tunnel vision when it comes to signings .
Makes no sense for to value him so highly based on potential seemingly not being met. Unless we think he’s got everything to be the best DM in the world or something which I doubt.

And it doesn’t say much about the players mentality if his drop off isn’t due to inability to perform but rather transfer links.

I completely agree, however have seen little links to any DM's outside of Tchouameni and Baleba. I just hope there are a couple of other ones under the radar

We would definitely get one no6 or player who plays mostly deeper Fernandes / Scott or similar profile would be in addition to that .

I just don't see Us targeting two Big money no 6 this Summer a no 6 and no 8 is my guess before any outgoings but Let's see How the Summer pans out .

Yeah that's my gut feeling too, maybe we go for a wildcard like Scott/Smit/Hackney later in the window after sales

It depends on whether the club see Mainoo as a 6 or a 8. If they see him as a 8. Then we will probably get two no6's and a no8. If they see Mainoo as a 6, then we will get one no6 and two no8's.

A month ago, Whitwell said on TOTD's that we were cleared to purchase two CMs upto £70 mil each. Plus a CM from the academy would be promoted.

However recently other football journalists are saying it's now 3 x CMs. However the third will be a cheaper signing. Shea Charles from Southampton has been linked to us as the third signing.

I dont think anyone knows right now what the club will do.

I’ve championed Mainoo likely more than anyone else on here over his various player performance threads, and even I don’t think what you’re saying is healthy or logical here.

What should happen with any player here is we get the best in class and have them meet the bar. At best they come out on top, at least, it raises the floor of the squad, forces improvement and also gives solid, competitive rotation.

I’m not talking about the stupidity of Amorim, pitting a youngster against Bruno, rather, establishing a new bar and order to level up this squad and make it have the edge all top teams in the world do. We’ve been nowhere near that standard for years and malaise and indifference set in and took root.

The idea is growth, improvement and betterment as a unit, not favouritism or bias automatically gifting players starting positions. Plus, match specific midfields and the options to give completely different setups and dynamics should also be available to us.

The objective should be bringing in the 3 best midfielders we can, having them and Mainoo bond and familiarise themselves and have all 4 as viable options come match day based on merit and requirements.

If Mainoo becomes a permanent fixture in the xi that way, he’s not only earned it, he’s proven good enough to keep other very good players at bay, which can only be good for Manchester United and Mainoo himself. That should happen all over the pitch, not just with Mainoo.

Better at what role though? He's certainly not as creative as Fernandes, hence Mainoo only having 3 premier league assists in 3 seasons.

Mainoo and Tchouameni as a combo would have 4 league assists in 3 seasons, it's simply not creative enough.

We're going to have to add someone more creative than Mainoo, whatever that means for his playing time.

We did the same mistake with Mason Mount as well. I understand the club's POV. We're increasingly having to play against teams with a 6-7 defensive minded players in a low block. That requires United to be able to commit loads of bodies forward who are able to exploit every little space given to them. A stereotypical no 6 is pretty useless in such circumstances. However it's also true that 6 attacking minded players are pretty useless if they are constantly being out muscled and pushed in their own half. Hence why a balance needs to be reached. Finding the right balance was one of the things SAF was amazing in and he wasn't scared of putting Pogba on the bench and Cleverley on the pitch to achieve that.

Quite frankly I would go for Mateus Fernandes. He's a young hardworking no 8 whose skillset and versatility allows him to cover the no 10 role and even the left flank if needed. What like any other player he comes with his set of weaknesses that needs to be mitigated. A tchouameni/Berge, Mateus and Bruno CM would be elite. It brings the right balance between workrate, pace, height, experience, technique and passing ability. It also prepares us for the future as Mainoo would transition as a no 8 and Mateus as a no 10.
You see - a young, talented, well rounded and PL proven CM like him is hard to come by so this is an opportunity that comes by once in five or even ten years. Before Anderson came up, how many years has it been since Rice and Caicedo moved? It's exceptionally hard to recruit for midfield so we must do whatever we can to get him plus a DM even if it means just signing 2 CMs and enduring Ugarte or Collyer for one more year.

Thinking about what the club has said previously.

They want to buy two midfield players who can play together and either one play with Mainoo also.

If we sell Ugarte then we get a probably cheaper third player in because we have lots of games next season.

Firstly it isn't clear to me that this guy(MF) can't play with Mainoo. It might not be as strong defensively as either with a DM but they would be a difficult couple of players to get the ball off.

Secondly neither is going to play all the games next year so having them as alternates would prevent the vast drop off we have at the moment.I can see why there are doubts about the move though if it leads, due to price, to a poorer choice for the other midfielder. If MF and Mainoo can't in the end play well together we don't want to end up in the crap like this season when it turned out Bruno couldn't play deeper with any of our midfielders.
