Mateus Fernandes

Noooooooo! :( :(

Neves and then him. Are they there to destroy my midfield dreams?

Yeah they are just being bloody greedy now, can see Bruno in his one ear at World Cup about Utd, then Neves will be in his other ear about PSG as well

Is that a shitty source?

Leave a talented Portuguese CM for the rest of us ffs

Ruiz may have burnt his bridges of late but if they go for Fernandes, what does that signal to Zaïre-Emery?

Nothing I expect him to be mad about. He’s started 26 of 29 league games and 13 CL matches

That's before they would've signed Fernandes, which is his point. It's less game time for somebody that's already there

Whitwell wrote that he is one of Alex Scott, himself & Joao Gomes who are being watched, presumably as a second midfielder after Anderson/Tchouameni & Baleba if price is right.

I think we would have an advantage over PSG if we went for him, he calls Bruno his big brother and is his idol, being able to play with him would surely tip it in our favor.

My thoughts exactly but I guess competing on many fronts plus injuries means you need a big squad. 4 top players for 3 positions ain’t terrible, similar to their attack (Kvara, Dembele, Doue and Barcola). Then they still have the likes of Kang etc.

Their squad building has been excellent recently (barring CB signings I guess). Seems they’ve also mastered the art of peaking at the right time of the season. I hope we’re in for him. Would be an excellent signing and provide a lot of what we’re missing in midfield. I also feel you could possibly pair him with lots of players, such is his skillset.

Yeah agent Bruno at World Cup

Scott or Fernandes over Gomes all day and I see Fernandes as more of a Utd player over Scott.

A) Fernandes
B) Scott
C) Gomes

I do wonder where Baleba does into all of this too given it looks like it's Tchouameni or Anderson as our 'big' signing followed by one of these.

Yeah that would be my other, gut feeling says Utd see it as something like this

Top priority midfielder - Anderson
Backup - Tchaoumeni
Third - Baleba

Second midfielder - Fernandes
Backup - Gomes
Third - him

I might be very wrong though

If they sign him, it opens up the possibility for us to sign one of their other midfielders. They're not going to please all of them.

If we stay up I expect we'd be looking for a total fee not far short of the Rice one.

PSG, along with a couple of continental clubs, have a huge advantage in being able to configure their offers with believable bonuses/add-ons. PL clubs don't. We didn't believe Arsenal were realistic when they wanted a lot of performance related add-ons and I doubt we'd believe anyone else, with perhaps a possible exception for Man City.

Rice was absolutely adamant he wanted London and would probably have gone to Chelsea but for the ownership changeover and disruption to their status back in 2022.

Can't imagine Fernandes placing anything similar as a restriction.

If it is a choice of those 3 in the athletic article, it should be this lad by some distance. I don't think he's worth the money he'll cost, but he's got the highest ceiling.

If you get relegated you won’t get anywhere close to Rice money. In fact I doubt you do even if you don’t get relegated. Rice was far more proven and is English too, which seems to add a premium.

We obviously won't get the money if relegated, but if we stay up I'd expect us to be looking at £70m-£80m guaranteed, with plenty of believable bonuses on top from the right club.

Players' agent is in with the sporting director at PSG and we have a track record of doing business with PSG - we've signed three players of theirs in recent years.

We’ll see I guess but my feeling is that no club will risk that outlay on him. I don’t think he’s as good as Rice yet, who I felt was quite a dominant player for you. He just felt like more of a “sure thing” at the time and he’s shown why it was a minimal risk signing even at the high price.

I’m also not convinced PSG are still in the business of spending really extortionate fees on players. £35m on Vitinha and ~£50m on Joao Neves. I don’t see why they’d pay double on a less experienced player. Their biggest signing recently I think was Kvaratskhelia who cost £70m, but has won Serie A and was far more proven in both Europe and domestically.

I could be wrong and maybe Fernandes is far better than what I’ve seen of him. But that’s just my feeling.

Utd will sign Ruiz and give them the money for Fernandes.

Nah, he's too old now. And him not wanting to play unless he's fully 100% fit to play (even though all the coaches and the medical department clear him to play) means we'd be rightfully wary of buying him.

I actually think we won't even sniff around Bruno Guimaraes (even though he'd massively improve us) because of his age. Probably sensible, if we get everything else correct.

He may not be right now, but I believe Mateus Fernandes is going to be the better midfielder between him and Anderson. Should be number one priority, in my opinion.

From what I've seen of him, he's not actually the deep sitting, controlling midfielder many want. But he is a busy fecker and does play forward almost all of the time. I don't think you'd see us getting overrun in midfield like we have in previous years with him in there.

His best position, based on watching him for every minute about thirty five times this year , is deepish playmaker.

He struggled to make any impression at West Ham early on when played in a more advanced role in a 4-2-3-1. As soon as Paqueta was out of the team and he assumed the playmaker role his levels shot up.

He is already better than Rice as a technical player, though he's not the all round athlete Rice is. He gets about the pitch well and is more than happy to get stuck in, but is obviously smaller in stature.

A Rice/Fernandes midfield would probably be a good two man blend.

We need our elder Fernandes to help push this one through. Hate the fact PSG ended up with Joao Neves as well.
