Mateus Fernandes

Mainoo shouldn't be treated any differently than any of our other players. If we buy two new midfielders (Ederson and M. Fernandes lets say) and they outperform Mainoo, then so be it.
Agree with this....but £70m on a midfielder who to me looks best suited in his role and as someone else stated is perhaps lighweight and not great defensively as a partnership.....does effect budget in other areas, especially when we need two more defensive midfielders as we will probably have none at all.

I like Fernandes but when the likes of Caicedo, Enzo Fernandes and Rice were being touted around £100m fees thought it was excessive but understood as I do to a lesser extent with Elliot Anderson.......I dont personally see it with Fernandes that he warrants the fee in terms of ability and suitability....more age. Thas why I wouldnt sign him this summer myself

When United said we're interested in Fernandes then everyone and his dog are suddenly interested too!

PSG interested according to The Athletic. If true, we need move on.

Why? We're Man United and we're back in the CL. His idol is Bruno. He's settled in England. We have as good a chance as them.

I'd much prefer if we filled the Casemiro spot before we splash the cash on a Kobbie backup/competition.

We did similar last season with paying a lot of money on a position where our best player plays

Just because the best teams of the moment are interested in a player doesn’t necessarily that player will go to them over a perceived lesser team.

Players and their agents seem to be more interested more in ‘projects’ rather than the prestige of teams.

There’s all kind of things to factor in like playing time, whether a teams style suits that player, whether that team is on the up or potentially on the down etc. I think the elite level players and those who you do want in the team are ego-driven and they want a starring role in the team, rather than being an ancillary role from the bench. It’s partly why Pique left us because he wasn’t getting any games with Rio and Vidic ahead of him.

You see - a young, talented, well rounded and PL proven CM like him is hard to come by so this is an opportunity that comes by once in five or even ten years. Before Anderson came up, how many years has it been since Rice and Caicedo moved? It's exceptionally hard to recruit for midfield so we must do whatever we can to get him plus a DM even if it means just signing 2 CMs and enduring Ugarte or Collyer for one more year.
Manchester United 1991-1992 team was a magnificent side. Robson-Ince duo in CM was a joy to behold, we had Giggs and Kanchelskis bombing the flanks, Choccy and Hughes upfront and some of the meanest players in defense. If you think Maguire is physical then you haven't seen Steve Bruce in action. I bet if the guy got hit by a truck then the truck would break in half. Yet it still failed to win the EPL by 4 points to Leeds. In terms of goals against we were mint just 33 goals against ie the least in the league in a significant way. Leeds were the closest with 37 but the rest were miles of with Liverpool (40), 4th place Arsenal (46) and 3rd place Sheffield Wednesday (49). That squad was filled with warriors who bled for the badge week in week out. Yet United issue was lack of creativity which translated in lack of goals. We scored just 63 goals ie less then the likes of Sheffield United, Leeds and Arsenal and 1 goal more then Sheffield Wednesday. The year after we stumbled into Eric and the rest was history. Fast forward time and SAF had perfected the art of balancing the squad so much that he was able to win his last league comfortably with an old Carrick, an ancient Paul Scholes who came out of retirement and with a Championship level CM playing more first team games than Giggs, Anderson, Kagawa, Fletcher and Young. Cleverley made Fred look like prime Zidane. England for example had Lampard, Gerrard and Scholes in CM and it tanked. The 2020-2021 United squad had Pogba, Bruno, Mata, Matic, Fred and McT and it still failed to win anything.

The trick lie in balance. Would Ando-Mateus-Bruno work? I don't know. It's certainly prohibitively expensive which means that once we need to rest someone we'll end up having to rely on the likes Ugarte and Colyer Excuse my lack of political correctness but we might as well forfeit the game at that point. There's no doubt that Ando-Mateus has a wide skillset but its also true that they love playing in that no 6-no 8 hybrid role. Would they be stepping on each other's feet? There's also the issue that they aren't the biggest either which is a problem considering that our defense isn't amazing in air. Ah and I almost forgot. Mainoo might as well get comfortable on the bench cause hell will freeze before he'll be playing ahead of a 70m-100m new signing.

I'd much rather have Tchouameni or Anderson for that type of money. Was hoping for a steal due to relegation but 60-70 is more than I thought we would have to pay for him.

He's not going to go for daft money - all players have a relegation clause. There's no way he's going to be playing in the Championship next season.

You’re not getting Anderson for anything like that kind of money. Once Tchouameni’s wages are factored in, plus his higher transfer fee, it’s a notably more expensive transfer all round.

That's a big if though. And a big question of when. "After Bruno"... He's 31 and at his peak right now. If we compare him to somebody like Modric, Modric played his best football after 30 and only declined in late 30s. I honestly don't think there's anything to suggest Bruno is anywhere close to declining, he's a freak athlete and I would sooner guess he has a Modric type career arc where he keeps this level for another 3/4/5 years rather than him decline now.

As of now and for the immediate future, Bruno is our best player.
Of course, but not everyone declines at a gradual place. Some people just fall off and it would be safer to be ready for that ahead of time. Especially when his signing would help us in the immediate future also.

He should be at the top of our list. In any case PSG moves in for him, it opens up space for one of their midfielders to leave, in which case we should be after any of them.

No they don't. They have a wage reduction clause if they the club get relegated.

Also The Athletic confirmed yesterday he has no relegation release clause. Plus Southampton are owed 15% of the transfer to a new club.

Arsenal, PSG and us are interested.

Hence he's going to be £60-£70mil

I’ll be very surprised if it’s not all the big clubs in England as well as PSG and Bayern. Hopefully, the big 2 in Spain don’t stick their oar in.

Probably. Hopefully the chance of lots of regular first team football with us will help our case. Also now that Carrick is being confirmed as manager. Maybe for players like him learning from someone like Carrick might be a draw.

At his age he has plenty of time to go to a Madrid or Barcelona later in his career.

If we can't get him as our no8. I wouldn't say no to Alex Scott for no8.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love for us to sign him. I just don't see it happening as we'd prioritize someone who can partner Mainoo and Bruno in a 3 (or 4231). I think the 2nd player also needs to be the more defensive minded one to replace Ugarte as well. Right now we collapse without Casemiro, let's say we sign Tchouameni. We'll still collapse without Tchouameni. I don't think Mateus Fernandes is that? And I don't think we have the money to sign him as a 3rd priority

I would rather pay more for Tchouameni instead of doing this deal if this fee is to be believed. He's my preferred option this summer.

Thinking about what the club has said previously.

They want to buy two midfield players who can play together and either one play with Mainoo also.

If we sell Ugarte then we get a probably cheaper third player in because we have lots of games next season.

Firstly it isn't clear to me that this guy(MF) can't play with Mainoo. It might not be as strong defensively as either with a DM but they would be a difficult couple of players to get the ball off.

Secondly neither is going to play all the games next year so having them as alternates would prevent the vast drop off we have at the moment.I can see why there are doubts about the move though if it leads, due to price, to a poorer choice for the other midfielder. If MF and Mainoo can't in the end play well together we don't want to end up in the crap like this season when it turned out Bruno couldn't play deeper with any of our midfielders.
That's what the Academy is for, not much point in having one if we just bring in cheaper options as fillers for a few games a season

There’s over £50m difference between the two buy my estimate. One has likely capped out and will the best he’s likely to be, the other, who knows what his potential is.

It shouldn’t be one or the other between those two anyway as there’s need for both roles.

I feel whichever CM moves first will set the going rate for the summer.

If Anderson moves for anywhere near 100M then the likes of Fernandes and Baleba won't be moving for much less...they will be closer to 70M than 50M we would all agree they are worth..

Yeah hoping he doesn't make Portugal squad as would give Neves and Vitinha chance to get in his ear
i think Bruno would probably have a bit more pull than those two guys not too mention the bigger possibility of playing time right from the start and knowing the league

would be nice to have a couple of 21 yr olds in our midfield and let them learn and develop into a partnership for the next 5-6 years

The fourth midfielder will play a hell of a lot more than just a few games a season. We'd have to be comfortable with them starting 10-15 games and coming off the bench at least another 15 times. And all it would take is being unlucky with injuries (either one of the three ahead of him getting a serious injury, or just a few injuries spread amongst the three) and we'd be relying on him to play an even more significant part.

If there's a player in the academy that the club thinks is ready to step up to that role (in the same way Mainoo was a couple of seasons ago), fantastic. If not, we need to bring in somebody else for that role.

Baleba was always going to be around £70mil for Brighton to do business.

I have a feeling that as soon as Guardiola leaves City, Anderson may change his mind and want to come to us instead. Problem is £100mil is too much to pay.

Get it done for 60 millions plus 20 millions Ballon d'Or clause.
I actually hope we’re shrewd enough to offer a solid fee plus incentive driven clauses that add a healthy amount more so that our bid is attractive.if he meets them, both clubs are very happy with the structure of the deal.

To be honest, we have no chance of winning the Champions League in at least 4 years. While PSG seem to be able to win it for fun.

Come on Bruno don't let him follow Neves to PSG too, they are just being bloody greedy now

We missed Touchameni for 35M when Ralf recommended for us, we missed Rice when he was available, we missed Caicedo too.

Dont want to miss this time if players like Mateus, Anderson, Touchameni available.
No comeback to this, @Bobby_2024?
haha, I realized i shouldn't trust what ever is written on internet and copy it here, seems the journos are bit clueless these days.

I have doubts Rice ever wanted to leave London
