Mateus Fernandes

Of the players that have played against us this season, he and Sadiki have really stood out to me. Anderson has stood out in general, of course. Those three would be a dream scenario (but would be 220m minimally).

Yeah would be at least that price

The fourth midfielder will play a hell of a lot more than just a few games a season. We'd have to be comfortable with them starting 10-15 games and coming off the bench at least another 15 times. And all it would take is being unlucky with injuries (either one of the three ahead of him getting a serious injury, or just a few injuries spread amongst the three) and we'd be relying on him to play an even more significant part.

If there's a player in the academy that the club thinks is ready to step up to that role (in the same way Mainoo was a couple of seasons ago), fantastic. If not, we need to bring in somebody else for that role.
The 4th one doesn't need to be one player, we have Collyer, Gore, 2 Fletcher's, Scanlon, Kone, Thwaites for starters

Not paid much attention to him, what kind of midfielder is he?
Good in tight spaces, decent dribbler. Very good passer. Maybe a bit week defensively but can tackle and get stuck in.
He has the tools to become a midfield deep playmaker.
I think he's probably slightly better than Anderson at passing but a little less good defensively.

So does he play with someone like a Baleba?

He was typically played in more offensive roles either centrally or on the right with Southampton but has been repositioned under Nuno to be a deeper midfielder, and more central. He's taken to it really well and stated its his preference too. He's only 21 so its hard to tell if he can have a Baleba off season, but the traits he shows on the pitch are very good for any club. He's also one of those emotional, passionate players on the pitch who don't like to hide. Typical Portugese if we consider how Bruno can be for us in that sense.

I presume "complimentary additions" mean both can play with Mainoo and alongside each other?

Fernandes and Baleba along with Mainoo and Bruno at the tip of the spear would make us one of the best in the league.

We are still short of 1 player. You can not go into new season with 4 competitions with 3 players for 2 CM positions. I am counting on us moving Ugarte. We are fine in terms of number 10, since there is Bruno, Mount and if push comes to shove we can also use Amad, Cunha etc.

Add one more squad midfielder for Ugarte and we surely are up there. Hope it happens

He’d be third choice midfielder there too. Maybe 4th depending on how Zaire-Emery progresses.
I agree. Fernandes was decent at southampton, been good at west ham. He is 21 so young...but hes had one really goid season, isnt really for me a choice for the first 2cm we need which need to replace casimiro and be 2nd choice for that role...and he probably costs 60m minimum even if relegated...2nd season in a row...is that transformative?...i like him, not for our needs though and agree with you....getting a bit hyped for someone may not go to world cup, wouldnt start for psg or many clubs in europe. Seen some in thread lauding him as player they want as first choice and in other threads saying we need lw as cunha not ideal...i dont agree with that, different position but same percieved problem..but fernandes isnt ideal for our needs...he isnt a dm or right partner for mainoo...his best position is probably brunos replacement....cunhas better there, we already have very good young players may fill that role and there are cheaper...good player, not a priority...wrong time...wouldnt be dissapointed if we dign him but if the fee affects our budget spend in quality and numbers elsewhere needed...dont think its best way forward this summer

If we buy this Guy and Baleba, our midfield will be very Young, and that is the part of the pitch you want expérience alongside this type of players.
Not extending Casimero is a dumb move. It would have been so beneficial to play him once a week and have him in the dressing room.

Thinking we do these 2 and Tchouameni

I think Case wants to leave. Anyway, we do have an qualified central midfielder in the dressing room who can share his experience - Carrick.

The point still remains, and if anything spreading it out like that would be worse as it would indicate none of them are ready (or simply aren't good enough) to be playing at his level.

We will have the main three midfielders to spread out over what should be at least 50 games next season (hopefully up closer to 60). Consistently playing two games a week, something that neither Mainoo nor most of the players we're linked to are used to doing. Considering injuries, form and just being rested at times, we need somebody else able to play a significant amount of minutes else we'll run those three players into the ground.

Like I said in my previous post, if the club thinks one of the kids are ready to step into the first team and play a fairly significant amount of minutes then that's fantastic. By all means promote them into that role rather than buy another midfielder. But if that's not the case then that role is too important to consider it just a 'few games for the academy kids' kind of deal.

Our Head Coach knows a thing or two about midfield play and he is a regular in the dressing room and on the training pitch.

He seems very two-footed (not in the Gerrard way) in his highlights reel. This is quite rare and I think is a massive plus in favour of his signing.

From the small amount of highlights i've seen he looks to be a bit like Mainoo in the sense that he's dribbling-first type of centre mid? I suppose that's not what he really is, but how would you describe his playing style?

Doesn't appear to cover ground as much as say, Baleba. But doesn't give the ball away as much as he does. He's quite good with his passing and has all ranges in his locker (though he's not perfect at long passes, he still pulls a lot of them off). He's quite bullish in his direct passes at times, which Casemiro did well for us from deep positions. This feature for me sets him apart from say, Tchoameni.

Looks a much better passer to me.

Honestly he’s got the world at his feet. Good passer, can tackle, good interceptions, gets up and down
After missing obvious transfers like Fabinho, Gravenberch, Gundagon, even Bernado Silva, I'd really hope that our new decision makers snap Fernnades up.

At worst I think he'll raise our floor by quite a bit,

To me, i don’t think he’s that similar to Mainoo, and can’t understand the narrative doing the rounds that he will be backup/rotation with Mainoo. To me, he will make the team on merit. Good passer, gets back and makes tackles and interceptions, gets up and down, good under a press. That being said he’s still 21 so still has some things to learn.
