Mateus Fernandes

After missing obvious transfers like Fabinho, Gravenberch, Gundagon, even Bernado Silva, I'd really hope that our new decision makers snap Fernnades up.

At worst I think he'll raise our floor by quite a bit,
I’ll be seriously disappointed if we missed out

I definitely feel he and Mainoo can play together in a midfield 2 in many matches esp at home. They both are hard working, get stuck in, don't shy away from physicality. They are both press resistant. And he is a better passer than Mainoo

Some matches at home but not many matches at home IMO. The reason is because we need recovery pace or athleticism and neither offer that. Due to the way how we play is to play forward and we have players like Bruno, Cunha, Mbeumo, and etc who tend to play high risk game to progress the ball. High risk game means high reward but has high risk of losing the ball. They are not coached to play in possession based team and they never been coached to play that way before. With high risk of losing the ball means we need athleticism and pace to recover the ball to retain possession. The issue is that with Maguire, Licha, Fernandes, and Mainoo behind the attackers, none of them are the type of players with these athleticism and pace to win the ball in high intensity games like PL games.

I definitely love the idea to sign Mateus Fernandes because he is highly talented midfield but also need to sign midfielder with athleticism and pace like Baleba to provide more balance in the midfield squad depth.

I’d imagine the Bruno connection would sway it our way if we genuinely have an interest, to the point we get him to do a ‘utd only’ .

The only thing that might not make this transfer happen imo is our willingness to do the deal. There are better placed clubs out there but we can offer him a starting spot while they can't. I really hope the club sees him as a priority and gets this done early like Cunha.

Neither are good defensively, Mainoo gets dribbled past a lot.

If we sign him then I believe he will be more of a long term replacement of Bruno than Casemiro. Am I right?

The problem in this thread is too many are trying to give him a set role, whilst he’s shown himself to be both eclectic and very much a proper, all-round #8. He can defend, attack and understand the game well enough to do what is needed in a given position until a situation passes. He can play #6 and #10, but he’s an #8 who goes where he feels he’s best utilised at any given time, that’s why some pick out his long passes from deep and others are more interested in his short passing and intricacies closer to the opposition final third.

He could be moulded into a full-on #10 or #6 by a good coach, or even when he matures, but whilst he is as bright and mobile as he is, being a proper #8 best suits him and the way he thinks about the game, for the foreseeable, I would say.

Someone like Scholes, who played so many positions through the spine of the team is a good example of being put where his skillset best suited at a given time in his career. Fernandes is likely to be the same.

Agree with @Fortitude

We shouldn't think only about plugging a space for next season. Instead we should be asking: Long-term, what qualities do we want from our midfielders, and does Fernandes have those kind of qualities? If he's good enough and has the right mentality, we should bring him in.

Some people are looking at our midfield right now and just imagining who would be the best Casemiro replacement. But we could see our midfield shape morph next season, we could see changes in form, injuries, and player development like Fortitude alluded to.

We not only need to add quality in midfield, we need a range of profiles and abilities.

Exactly that.

Given we need more than one CM and only Mainoo in that position is a long term option, we have to go for this chap. We miss out of these kind of qualify midfielders too often.

Supposedly West Ham want £100 million whether they go down or not.

Seems to be the going rate for a PL midfielder these days,

That's just the opening gambit, they won't seriously think they're going to get that.

Good luck with that, when they're in the Championship and the player desperately wants out. Firmly in cloud cuckoo land.

Its all bluster. It was announced as far back as Jan their financial state was so dire, any relegation guaranteed a fire sale in order to survive harsh ffp charges in the championship. They won't get to dictate his price in any way if they do go down. They'd be lucky to get to double in cash what Liverpool paid Newcastle for Wijnaulldum frankly. Even with inflation adjustment.

A few reputable outlets have all said anywhere between £55-70mil, depending if west ham go down. Not seen anyone mention £100mil.

I presume West Ham could ask for that if they stay up and anderson goes for that much to City. Sets the precident for no8's, pricewise this summer.

Would be pleased if we got fernandes + baleba + another this summer

Not seeing it with him, not for the fees mentioned at least.

Not convinced he could play next to Mainoo, and he's too expensive for rotation/competition. Use the money and get Kobbie a partner

We need rotation players on par with our first team if we want to do anything major.

He doesn’t have to play with mainoo, mainoo shouldn’t be a guaranteed starter right now as good as he is.

We don't have an endless budget, I'd like us to fill first team holes before we spend a sizable portion of it on a rotation player

The holes in our team are in midfield. It’s gaping.

He is similar to mainoo, but his passing sets him apart. He is more expansive, something we are actually missing.

I’m not sure if he’s the one, but he should be an option.

There’s too much to do verses Bruno G. He’s genuinely one of the best midfielders in the league and he’s schooled us just as much as West Ham. You need a solid midfield of your own to face off against him and the rest of Newcastle’s athletic midfield. Soucek is deadweight out there and it leaves Fernandes way too much to do - without connective tissue, there’s not much these touted midfielders can do at these relegation level teams; not dissimilar to Anderson without Gibbs-White.

Bruno G shows time and time again why he should be sounded out, even if he is older. He’s on another level to most other midfielders and all of the ones we’re linked to.

Totally agree, like him, irrelevant of any fees or even suitability to us as a signing....hes good but hes certainly not omg we cant miss out on this guy good.

Ultimately where I stand with him. He's very good, and maybe in a Luis Enrique type system where you have a midfield 3 and the full team is crazy hard workers... But realistically nah it won't work next to Mainoo.

Not the best game of his today, but seen enough to know he's definitely ready for the step up.

Yeah Bruno G just looks a cut above but I think he'd just rotate with Mainoo. I've been a pretty big fan but think we should be disciplined with the fee, not an 80m player. 50-60m should be fine.

Agreed, Bruno G is absolute quality and would be a huge addition.

He would obviously be the best choice but for some reason we are not looking at him

There is an obvious reason why we aren’t (even if we disagree it’s a valid one to rule him out completely), it’s age.

It is most likely yes but I whole heartedly disagree with it. He isn't even old in CM terms and we need players in their prime to compete.

Because he's 28 and turns 29 in November. Also Newcastle will want £100mil + for him. After all he's one of the best in CMs in the league and their captain.

It's just too expensive a deal.

I'd sign him if it were possible, but the last player Utd signed who was over 27 years old was Casemiro.
