Mateus Fernandes

If he goes PSG then what a fecking boring move for your career.

This link was obviously going to pick up as soon as it looks like the momentum for relegation swung against them.

Yeah, I'm very happy going with him and Baleba. I hope we're looking at Alex Scott too.
Damn, Fernandes, Baleba and Scott (plus Mainoo) would be some overhaul! And our midfield would be sorted for the next decade potentially! Might lack some balance there as well as I think Mainoo, Scott and Fernandes are all probably best as 8’s with only Baleba there the true 6? Though I think Fernandes is so well rounded he could play as a 6 or 8.

Probably wouldn’t make sense to have them all that young in there, right? Though we’ll have more than enough games for them all. Let a man dream!

With West Ham going down, I guess we have to hope for a clause or something. Not sure if that would be public. Nice to hear we're looking at him though, class player.

Is the 40m clause not true?

In a midfield he will never start in, in a league that has only one decent team.

Fecking boring.
He’ll play plenty for them, alongside two of the three best midfielders on the planet - heaven for a player.

I hope we land him, but PSG have massive allure for players for as long as Enrique is there.

Living in Paris, competing for the CL every year under Luis Enrique, alongside Vitinha and Joao Neves and Nuno Mendes, and then yes winning lots of domestic trophies, and getting lots of money.

The premier league is a big challenge and lure of course, but it was always behind Barca and Real Madrid in terms of the lure for players. PSG has it in them to basically go to that level due to the Paris factor and if they keep on playing as they do. They're definitely a bigger draw than any premier league team currently.

Saw him live a few times when he was playing for Southampton last year in the PL, he has loads of energy, high work rate, pretty good defensively, but other than that I didn't feel like he was very creative or an excellent passer. Might turn into a good #8, but I don't think he's that good currently. Tidy little player who can do some things very well while being not really exceptional at anything. If we are planning to bring him as one of our starting midfielders, I would be disappointed. Considering his age and West Ham's probable relegation, could be good value, but as a footballer, I don't think he's going to set OT alight.

WH get relegated...you go after him

if Spurs get relegated....you go after archie gray

We should have signed MF when Southampton got relegated. He was an obvious quality player and going cheap. Let's not make the same mistake twice, eh. WH looking far more likely to go down after this weekend's results. Strip the carcass!

I put him in the hidden gems thread when he was on loan at Estoril from Sporting Lisbon for a reason, so we could have got him before Southampton. Was my pick then

We went for Ugarte instead

I think he's probably become more attack minded since then playing a lot of games as a #10

Well he sort of would be at Southampton and West Ham, as they don't have so many top-class footballers. Shouldn't mean that he isn't capable of moving back 15 yards for United. Keane certainly managed it. Even Scholes really.

My dream double midfield signing this summer would be Tchouameni and Mateus Fernandes. That would be some serious business. Tchouameni is ahrder get, but Madrid have been known to do weird things in the market to fund superstar signings. Failing Tchouameni , Baleba would be very gettable but represents somewhat of a risk as our main DM player. Anderson is obviously very good but the fee being touted for him (125m) is absolutely bonkers. In 2-3 years time when Bruno is at an age when he probably isn't the same "first name on the teamsheet" player that he is today, I can see a Baleba, Mainoo, Mateus Fernandes midfield being amongst the very best in Europe. But that is not only then, but also has a few "Ifs" in it regarding each fulfilling their potential. I feel we need a proven, top class entity in DM, and then add Baleba on top of that. Mateus F would be in the rotation for the 8 or 8+ role (for now).

To be clear I believe Ugarte needs to be sold, and three midfielders need to be added. That would leave us with (for example) Tchouameni, Baleba, Mainoo, Mateus F, Bruno, and Mount for 3 positions. But Mount has positional flexibility and would offer us coverage for the LW slot. That mix of players gives us significant tactical flexibility too. It's 200m+ in CMs, but it is needed. Offset by fees received for Hojlund, Rashford and Ugarte, plus the massive wages of Casemiro gone. If we then signed a left back, and perhaps a veteran CF, we'd be in good shape for next season. Not perfect, but significantly closer to where we need to be, and with our biggest weaknesses addressed.
Yeah Tchouameni and Fernandes give us a nice balance of proven at big club and CL, paired with someone who has experience of playing in PL. Wouldn't be against then taking a punt on someone like Hackney or Charles for third midfield signing to replace Ugarte.

55m for Fernandes, 55m for Alex Scott, 65m for Baleba, 60m for Rogers/Ndiaye, 50m for Hall ... I don't think we have the budget for all these transfers.

Completely agree. Tchouameni and Fernandes, and eventually Mainoo ahead of them, would represent the first time United have had a midfield with genuine top class potential in ages. It isn't guaranteed that any of the three, let alone all, reach their ceiling but that's always the case. It's so tantalizing that I'm convinced it won't happen. I think I'm still in the "buy the dip" camp on Baleba, and there is a huge upside there as well but there is also unfortunately bust potential as well.

I was encouraged hearing on the Talk of the Devils podcast that two CMs, an LB and a ST is the summer shopping list, although I think we need to sell Ugarte for whatever we can and buy a third CM (Joao Gomes would be nice). I don't think I've ever seen a United summer where what I think the club needs, and what the club expressly wants, are the same. United doing sane things in the market feels way too good to be true. I'm still scared we'll do something really dumb, like buy Morgan Rogers for no reason whatsoever.

Could see this being the quick cunha type signing for this summer. Get him quickly after West Ham are relegated and before the World Cup.

Who knows though, maybe we get in our 3 midfield signings super quick.

Completely agree. In an ideal world I would have liked Anderson and Tchouameni, but that is not possible and Anderson looks City bound.

Fernandes has the potential to be a top CM and Tchouameni would add a bit of experience that we will be lacking in the middle once Casemiro leaves. I think people are severely underestimating the importance of experience in this position. While Baleba and Fernandes for instance might have the required skill set on paper, them along with Kobbie is a severely inexperienced midfield.

If we could get Baleba as a 3rd CM, that would be great but I don't think we'll have enough money for 3 CM signings. I think it's more likely we promote one of Thwaites/Tyler Fletcher. So Tchouameni and Fernandes must be our top 2 CM targets this summer.

Yeah would be delighted if we manage to get him and Tchouameni, however gut says it is most likely this guy and Baleba unless Real go all in for Rodri.

I would prefer Kees Smit instead of M. Fernandes. Kees Smit brings the passing ability that Fernades doesn't quite have plus he is also a great dribbler and combative. Able to play the 6 and 8, he will also help us control games. If we bring in M.Fernandes, then no-one in the midfield bar Bruno is great at progressing the ball through passing. Kees Smit, Tchouameni + Baleba/young DM would be be an incredible window and total upgrade of our midfield.

Post Bruno, a midfield of Mainoo, Smit and Tchoaumeni would match up well against any midfield in the league.

I will admit we do need that quality passer too, however they don't need to cost the earth so hoping we could find someone for a similar fee to Lammens

He is class and a must buy.

Him, Beleba and Hackney tick alot of boxes.
The most important box of all is not ticked.... Experience.
Fernandes doesn't seem to stand out, it's a gamble. He mainly just keeps it simple, we need someone with experience who has a range of passing abilities too.
Baleba yes because he is a true number 6 with pace, power etc. But again no experience along with Maino.
Replace Case with experience.

Haven't really seen Smit. But Fernandes isn't anything special, agreed. Tchouameni + Baleba would be good.

Does that partnership lack passing ability though?

I'd question how much you've seen of Fernandes, if you think he doesn't have the passing ability. Also, I think it's a bit of stretch to say that Smit is a great dribbler or combative. Especially considering that he is playing in the Eredivisie, his duel numbers aren't great. And that's definitely something the club is paying attention to.

Obviously he doesn't have the same line breaking passing ability of a Wharton or Scott, however believe it's an area he's definitely young enough to improve on
