Mateus Fernandes

The probable price tag I put on him a few months ago was 65m, and I think the final price will likely be there or thereabouts. I’d guess, if I had to, we’ll end up paying something like 60+10 or 65+5, for a 70m package.

We know West Ham have to sell but they’ll ease the pressure in order to get the best return on their most valuable asset by selling other players first. Would be my guess.

As for what Fernandes is worth….70m? Absolutely. What do I think he should be going for this summer, all things considered? Probably 55+5. But it’ll be 10m more than that. Frankly I’d go to 75m for him IF a good chunk were in addons. Like 60+15.

For me he is a unique player that we will enormously regret letting move elsewhere.

I can do the accounting side, I just don’t think he’s that good a player.

Certainly not the best young player in the PL, I’d take Anderson over him in a heartbeat.
How about Anderson two years ago? He's about that much older than Fernandes. Two summers ago, nobody could have imagined how quickly Anderson would improve.

Also, not exactly a hot take rating Anderson above Fernandes. There's a reason that Forest are quoting 120 mil.

Think this one drags out.

WHU may nees the sale, but not to us. They know we are vulnerable and therefore have leverage.

Can see him going to chelsea, Arsenal because the missus wants 'London'
Why are we vulnerable? Fernandes isn't the only midfielder in the market that West Ham can squeeze us over with. We already signed Ederson. We need 1 marquee signing in midfield - anything on top is a bonus since we have at least 4 decent academy players to play fourth choice.

West Ham on the other hand need to sell. No one's going to buy him for 80m. More in the region of 50-60. Rest is just pre-sales junk.

Yeah there is no doubt right now Anderson is above Fernandes, however he may well be at same level in two years time when he will be 23

Anderson over 2 years ago went for 35m. Fernandes' fair value should be right about there.

Kind of interesting the Portuguese/Brazilian connection.

Casemiro just left
Cunha
Ederson (looks confirmed)

Bruno
Dalot
M Fernandez (possible)

Not sure what you mean by fair value. That 35 million fee for Anderson is probably the least helpful thing in terms of predicting future fees given that it was part of a PSR shenanigans swap with Forest.

At the time he was sold, Anderson wasn't an out and out starter for Newcastle, he started about half of the 21 league games he played in the 23/24 season. Fernandes has been a starting midfielder in the PL for two seasons now, was one of the best midfielders in the league this season, and turns 22 in July. He was also bought for 40 million pounds just last summer. We can talk about fees going mad in general all day, but he's obviously not a 35 million pound player in today's market.

He’d played a grand total of 1300 minutes (basically just all sub appearances) for the two seasons before that. Fernandes has played 6000 minutes in the premier league in the last two seasons.

Not comparable.

I don't think that he's a 75M£ player. Even if his wages are not big, 75k per week, he would be on the bottom half of our wage bill.

Nevertheless, I am not sure that the midfield three of Mainoo, Fernandes and Ederson is special. I think we miss something there.

City has Rodri + Reijnders that can dictate the tempo and are looking for another fabulous one in Anderson.

Arsenal has Rice, added Zubimendi this summer, have option like Lewis Skelly and may add also this summer.

If we want to upgrade our weakest area, we need an extra quality, and not sure that the combinasion of Mainoo, Fernandes and Ederson are enough for us to fight for the top 4 and survive in CL.

This plus Scott or Wharton would be golden for me. I’m not fully sold on the need for some destroyer.
This would leave us very vulnerable though. They’re all young and unproven at the highest level.

Midfield is a position where experience is of the utmost importance. Buying 3 young midfielders is very risky, especially when they will all step up to one of the most scrutinised clubs in the world. It’s a totally different game playing comfortably for Palace or Bournemouth, but when the pressure of playing for United comes in, how will they cope?

Tchouaméni Is the only experienced player we’re linked to and every report indicates he’s staying. I’m not sure experience is the main (dis)qualifier this window.

If we got this Ederson, Fernandes and then spent big on a balanced CM with good defensive capabilities, I would be quite comfortable with our midfield going into next season.

Which midfielders would you then be starting away at Arsenal next season?
Fernandes had an excellent game against Arsenal this season. Mainoo had an excellent game against Arsenal this season. Scott had an excellent game against Arsenal this season. Ederson had an excellent game against Arsenal last season.

There are a lot of different tactical profiles there. It isn’t a world class midfield, but if they all progress it could become a very industrious and technical midfield.

I don't know if it's deliberate or not, but it's very interesting that we're going after players that are not going to the world cup. It feels like a year where we are re-tooling the midfield, and adding depth, rather than going after the one marquee signing who might just come back knackered after the world cup anyway.

Need midfielders for pre-season, even one of the Fletcher's is at the WC now!

In all seriousness though, if England go far into the tournament and we signed someone else (Anderson, just for sake of argument) they probably wouldn't be ready for our first game of the season. Need to sign a few players not in that boat I think

Anderson over 2 years ago went for 35m. Fernandes' fair value should be right about there.

Anderson moved after a season in which he had made just 10 league starts for Newcastle. The season before that, he made just 3.

Whereas Fernandes is moving off back to back seasons of 34+ premier league starts. In one of which he was his team's POTY, in the other of which he came 2nd.

There's no reason to value Fernandes at the same price point when he's clearly further along in his development and more important to his team than Anderson was at Newcastle.

Mateus Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo are better players than guys like Lewis Skelly, Reijnders and Zubimendi (I like Lewis Skelly but yeah he's young and mostly played left back in his career so far). The other 2 are pretty average.

And so we should be, we aren't in the position that Arsenal are in where they have a very strong squad that needs that one X factor to perhaps get them over the line in say the CL. They've taken years to get to this point. We're still very much in re-build mode and need squad depth. While an Anderson would be great, we need to use our money wider with a view to hopefully being at a point where that one marquee signing in a couple of years gets us over the line.

I'm surprised that some people are expecting Ederson, Fernandes and then a big money signing. I think if we get Fernandes, he is the big money signing.

I would love Ederson, Fernandes and Baleba. We still need that special DM. Baleba is a freak of nature.

West Ham are not entitled to any profit from a transfer. They may want to but doesn't mean we should be the one giving it to them. If they want something ridiculous like 80m just tell them to feck off and that's it.

Who'd you go for instead?

I think they're entitled to start with an optimistic guide price. I'm sure they know he will be leaving for less than £80m.

We should keep talking to them I reckon, he seems a good option.

They'll obviously be looking at getting some profit and given he has multiple suitors they'll get just that. £80m is too high though. £60-65m type of package seems about right.
