Matheus Cunha | 2026/27 Performances

Cunha did a great job on the left wing last season and was comfortably one of our best players from December onwards. Just play him there and he'll perform. We shouldn't be trying to play him up front. Right now he looks unfit anyway so not expecting him to start either of the first 2 games. Dorgu has his strengths against top teams due to how good he is out of possession in those attacking areas. Against all other teams Cunha really should be starting. If Rashford gets back to his best he could also make an argument to start eventually, but certainly he should be beginning the season on the bench.
This - he has a position, don't complicate it, play him there.

Obviously in pre-season, people need minutes, so it's fine to bank minutes anywhere, but once the season starts, he has to play in his position, ideally with a mobile LB behind him.

Mbeumo will be up top until his form drops and Sesko gets back, CUnha might be a third choice there, but naturally will get a nod in preseason to be tested there.

He's gonna start off the bench for Dorgu, had a good WC and decent second half of the season, so should be second choice LW only due to the fact that he came back late.

He is a curse as a ST. I knew we were going to lose or draw as soon as I saw him play as the Striker.

Every game he plays upfront we lose or draw matches.

He has no ability to play that position but just because he is a key player doesn't mean we have to fit him in at the most important part of the pitch.

A bit languid compared to the Cunha we're used to. Appears to be still stuck in summer mode.

Dude had some very good games playing on the LW last season. I have no clue what is Carrick's idea with him. Obviously he isn't a striker nor a false #9.

Dreadful as a striker. Offers zero threat.

Not sure why carrick kept him as false #9 when he had a mare as a false #9 vs Milan already

So frustrating, holds on to the ball far to long, doesn’t release it quick enough, he’s not a striker but as I said before he won’t pass quick enough and his touch isn’t good enough to play as a ten his second touch is a tackle. I’ve no idea what his best position is.

Still an enigma. I can make strong arguments about why he’s a poor LW, ST or 10 and still recognize that he has to start.

meh.. another one that shouldn't play as he's not match fit.. I guess Sesko situation forced us to play him

Don;t think match fitness had much to do with it , what we saw from him today was much like a lot of what we saw from him last season.

He will play well now and again but not a player to be relied on.

He needs a fixed role on the left, he doesn't have the football smarts to play the bruno lite type of role we seem to be forcing him into

If you’re competing for titles I think he’s a very good and versatile squad player. As a starter, there are too many occasions where he just drifts out of games I feel. Not sure he’ll ever be at that elite level we want/need.

Same with Mbeumo. We bought him knowing about the flaws in his game. We knew he is a decent PL proven player which seems the most important thing for us now. Probably not good enough to actually win things

We had a somewhat settled team last season with Mbeumo playing up front, Cunha on the left and Amad on the right, before throwing in Sesko late on.

Now Carrick has gone and insisted on bringing Cunha up front, when it was pretty blatantly clear it doesn’t work, when he can just stick with the (sort of) working set up, with Dorgu playing on the right.

Granted, with the level we showed today, no guarantee it’d work any better.

He is a no 10 player who can drop down. Can most likely also play well on LW if we had a good attacking LB that constantly comes blanding by in overlap.
But right now I cant see him as a starter and especially not as a striker.

No evidence of this. Sesko didn't play a minute of preseason and Amad was injured, the alternative is Zirzkee or Mbuemo up top.

And Mbeumo is quite good up top tbf. Plus Zirkzee looked ok in preseason.

Gonna be an unpopular take, but I said to my friends about halfway through last season that we should sell this guy before his value drops too much because he's clearly not good enough to be a regular starter. Dreadful decision maker, absolutely dreadful, and his touch is very inconsistent.

Needs to play in his hest position. Which is not a striker
He's a 2nd striker mainly. Can be a left winger. Can be a striker. His problem was his performance, not his position. Touch was all over the player which we see really often with him.

What is his best position?
His best position at Wolves was a 10, which he’ll unlikely to play much. His second best is on the left wing, where as much as I love him, his form has been patchy. I hate seeing him up top, his strengths are running at players with the ball, and up front he doesn’t get to do it.

There is a bit of n issue when he is played up top as he and Bruno want to occupy the same space. Just looked like a bit of a mess today. He either plays in place of Bruno or out on the wing for me as they just congested the central area infront of their box.

I enjoyed him in moments last season but he’s never really shown any command of his position. Same could be said for Mbeumo. Both need to step up this year.

I think he possesses very little game intelligence. Great individual attributes but that was a poor showing today. Dorgu gets a lot of stick but he's a much younger and newer to the league than someone like Cunha who's supposed to impose his will on lower sides like Hull.

One of the things I was happy about when carrick was appointed was is the application of common sense. Amorim, ETH , jose - all of them lost it when it came to that aspect by putting players out of position.

Utterly idiotic decision to put cunha as no. 9 . Totally put the team out of rhythm with no focal point and goal threat and took the creativity and tenacity that cunha brings on the left, out of the game

Bruno so incredibly high up the pitch needs to stop anyway

Don't like him at No 9.

Like his first touch even less.... For an attacking, dribbling, exciting Brazilian, his first touch is an abomination.

He’s a decent player with a good game in him now and then, but he’s not a top player. There are too many like him in this squad who probably think they are better than they are as they play for United.
Alongside Dorgu, he will struggle this season.

Left or in Brunos position.
If we do that and play are "strongest" attacking line up we'll have literally 0 creative spark from are front line. Would be a bunch of individuals relying on moments even more so then we do now.

Doesn't change the fact that these are his best positions. That he made more sense under Amorim's system is a different topic
