Immense in the second half when we needed to defend. Hopeless in the first half when he constantly got the ball at the right during builds ups.
Pretty harsh on him. I thought he was good throughout, it’s probably not his fault that he’s the one being asked to do things that most centre backs couldn’t.

Our player of the season thus far, I think he’s been really, really good. The problem he’s had for years is expectations; if you’re captaining Ajax to the CL semis in your teens, people expect a generational player. Instead, he’s just been solidly, 7/10, “good” at Juve, Bayern and last season. He’s still quite young for a centre back; if he carries on as he’s started this season, he’ll move up a tier or two.

I only watched the second half, but he looked great.

This is the player I thought and hoped we were getting when he signed. Was worried about his injuries but hope that is past him now. Him not being ccb last year was crazy as well

Why did Bayern want rid?

Not like them to sell top players with their prime years ahead of them.
They’d spent big on Kim and Upamecano as well, but de Ligt was on the highest wages. From what I heard, their fans were a bit gutted he left. Given Kim has been rubbish whenever I’ve seen him, I’m not surprised.

As the wide centre half tonight he was immense: that’s what Amorim wants in his centre half. Aggression. At one point he’s pressing their midfielder on our right wing in the final 3rd. My man of the match by a distance to be fair

Immense, again. He’s been our best player so far this season, I’d say. Keep it up, Matthijs!

He's never been slow.. never. Just a myth that Redcafe has been holding unto and trying to lump him in with Maguire.

Another solid perfomance. One of the biggest positives of the season so far.

Maguire has never been slow either.
That's also a perpetual myth that people like to bring out to beat on Maguire.

Anyhow, De Ligt immense again today, enjoyed that performance a lot.

I was thinking this in the game that he isn’t half as slow as people make out.

Love how proactive and physical he was. Proper defender.

Cheers. De Ligt is not part of the ‘leadership group’ which does seem somewhat strange - given I wouldn’t have Heaton, Dalot, Martinez and probably Maguire in the starting 11.
It does seem odd that De Ligt isn’t one of them but they are supposedly picked with specific sub-groups in mind. I guess there’s no group specific to De Ligt that wasn’t covered by others.

Still, in terms of leadership on the pitch he’s one of our most impressive and vocal players and off the pitch he seems to be well-liked by others. I do hope that he’s in line for the captaincy once Bruno eventually leaves.

He’s the obvious choice, and to be honest there aren’t many options.

Casemiro, Maguire, Shaw have worn the armband - but aren’t likely to be here much longer.

There really is not anyone else. Irrespective, he would be a good leader.

Gave him man of the match not expecting many others to so im happy to see him getting credit.
I think thats precisely what we need from the wide cb's and has been pretty lacking in previous games so it would be the standard, the example i'd be looking for from others. Dont think his characteristics make him that suited to the role but understanding it will go further vs others who've looked a bit lost at times.

Player of the season so far, which is a pretty low grade competition, but he's certainly been above 7/10 on average.

The next captain.

Agreed completely. Captain material for sure. Massive today just massive. I also didn't realize he had some of the footwork in him he showed off late in the match

Yeah excellent again.

He can definitely be the central CB but quite like him as the wide one as well because he actually goes for it. Even if he's not got the best technique of all the CB's he gets up the pitch and involved.

He's a class act and has been since a teenager. Took a year to acclimatise, he can be one of the top centre back's in the league. Great all round game today.

He looks quicker this season - won at least two or three foot races against what I thought was a fast player. He's also much more aggressive this season, more decisive, and I think even his passing is crisper.

Maguire is slow - like properly slow. His top speed is decent enough, but he lacks any acceleration or agility, so he's very slow even if he can keep up on a 40-50 yard run. De Ligt should not be considered similar in any way. That being said, we saw the importance of Maguire today aerially - he would never have lost the header that Yoro lost.

When talking about the type of speed that a footballer needs, Maguire certainly is slow. Once he actually gets up to full speed he's 'ok' (nothing more than that), but he's very slow off the mark and takes ages to get up to that top speed when compared to the vast majority of footballers. Generally players of his size will be slightly slower over the first couple of steps, but not to the extent Maguire is. Ideally they'd be like Smalling where he could be slightly slow when having to turn and take the first step or two, but then quickly got to a top speed that allowed him to make up that ground the majority of times.

De Ligt is somewhere in between, where he seems below average both in terms of explosiveness off the mark and acceleration, but obviously faster at both than Maguire. Actual top speed might be similar though.

Maguire's reading of the game helps out with his lack of blistering acceleration, but he really isn't that slow in this regard either...not fast admittedly, but definitely not slow.

The guy has been constantly getting caught out running into midfield and getting played around for his entire time at Utd.

He defo played higher up the pitch defensively today as did Shaw. A notable shift and we looked more organised and solid

He's as slow as it gets in the context of premier league centre halfs, there's no point pretending any different. No recovery pace, if a player is past him hes not catching
