Even when fully fit, he is an average defender at best, i dont see why he should continue post this season at united apart from nobody wanting to buy him. Ineos have been ruthless shifting out some players, i think he will be on the next list, if someone wants to buy him and opay his wages.
Hes not average when fit. But we should move on from him

Wasn't he always injury prone? It's why I was worried when we bought him and delighted at how long he stayed fit and played well when he came here.

Let's hope it's just a non long term issue as Maguire isn't getting any younger, Martinez seems to be struggling with a lot of injuries too after his two serious ones and Yoro and Heaven are talented but not quite ready yet.

Hope he can get fit again.

I'm not confident this is the last we'll see of his injury issues, whenever he returns. But I'm not sure who'd pick him up off us at this point either. Might as well see how next season goes, since I doubt there'll be any interest unless he finishes strongly.

He was in great form before he got injured. Even the ABU commentators noticed.

How quickly do we forget.

Nah, he is pretty overrated and often out of sort, we now have three consecutive "top team" environments showing exactly that.

Don't care about the past. He was excellent this season as the CCB for us. Aerial ability is great, box defending is excellent and the way he nipped in high on the striker receiving the ball and won the challenge created many turnovers for us. Distribution was a bit hit or miss but by the time he got injured he was doing really well.

Maguire is also really good at all of the above so we haven't missed him so far.

For both these guys, as long as they aren't put in a postion where they need to defend wide spaces and cover large distances, they are excellent.

I was worried too. Anytime people come to the premier league injuries just get worse.
Odd move for the club. Ten hag was pusing for him most likely

What's up with Bayern and their injury ridden players? Even the ones that they haven't shipped off like Alphonso Davies are having serious issues.

Nah, he was on course to be our best performer this season (most consistent anyway).

He was our best player this season until that weird injury. Injury proneness (is that a word?) is a concern with him though, I have to say.

Yeah, he's been really good for us this season, until this unfortunate injury. Brought an aggression and leadership to the backline we often lack/miss.

Unfortunately, we're in a really tough position now thanks to both this guy and Martinez. They're great players, but they cannot be counted on and it'd be a mistake to go into next season presuming that de Ligt or Licha will be a starter.

I think we need to view de Ligt as a reserve for next season and try to bring in a new CB for the first eleven.

He's been pictured going into Carrington a few times, even just the other day. Even though it is likely for rehabilitation/gym work to recover from him injury, it's better knowing he's at least at Carrington.

It sounds a bit like you are blaming them for being injured. We have good center backs to fill in until they recover.

It is hard to replace Martinez‘s passing ability, we definitely miss him and it is not easy to find it in the market either.

De Ligt fit starts over most center backs, the way he has been performing. Let‘s hope this back thing is just unfortunate and not a pattern.

In a back three.

I don't think he's cut out to play in a back four.
He most certainly is. I have no idea what this is based on, if anything he's not warmed to a back 3 as much for his national team, at least according to his coach who wouldn't select him.

To be fair, I'm not suggesting this is a case of players being unavailable because of some inherent quality they're lacking or something they're doing wrong in their preparations. It's just plain old bad luck. We have three players- de Ligt, Martinez, and Mount- who are very injury prone and we know every season they're going to be missing a lot of matches. That's just not a good way to set up a squad.

At the end of the day, there's some value in the sentiment that the best ability is availability. We cannot count on de Ligt and Martinez, and this is a season in which we're only playing 40 matches, which is unheard of. Next season we could easily be playing 55 or more if things go well.

Bayern aren’t in the habit of flogging useful players.

They're one of the most common teams to cycle through and sell good players for teams not quite at their level, same as PSG. Because every couple of summers they will have a year where they sign 3 or 4 first teamers. They keep the ones they like best (they arent always the best, they just like them the best. Others might be just as good but their have a style preference) and then teams who are 2nd and 3rd best in their divisions can pick up good players from Bayern sometimes at a cut price because if its one of those summers they need to clear out some of the squad.

Palhinha has been a good loan for Spurs, Tilman did well enough they bought him back, Gravenberch, Sabitzer has been a useful signing for 2nd placed Dortmund, Lewandowski to Barcelona, Chris Richards has been good for Palace - all in the last 4 years and discounting Mazraoui who has obviously been worth the price as hes with us.

Some of their sales havent done the business elsewhere and De Ligt is certainly questionable to this point. Especially now he has this current injury and with Maguire doing just as well in his absence. But its not because Bayern dont let go of useful players. They let go of plenty

They aren’t sweating any of those losses aside from Gravenberch who is the one player I can think of in recent years they should’ve held onto.

Right but that doesnt mean none of the players they let go arent useful to other teams. They just arent teams as good as Bayern so the standard is a little lower. But that goes for a lot of teams including us

Their castoffs are largely Galatasaray standard.

You mean the team that eased past Juventus in the CL and have an advantage over Liverpool for the 2nd leg? :smirk:
Availability is a factor when speaking about how good a player is, no question about it. But prior to him disappearing into injury hell, he was one of our, if not the best player

 Surely you’re joking here but their CL run is down to paying a bomb for Osimhen who is obviously too good for them. Bayern castoff Sane has been a complete waste of space for them in Europe.

I fundamentally agree with what you wrote here but Tilman is not at Bayern. ;)
