He is class, but his injuries are worrying. One of the greatest abilities is staying fit, and he can't seem to do that (neither can Martinez).

Yeah we definitely need to be looking at signing a CB who has Martinez ball playing ability and De Ligt height

When I watched Dortmund I thought Schlotterbeck was slow. AI says he‘s fast.

Is he fast enough to be an upgrade on De Ligt and Martinez?

I like De Ligt.

But he doesn't give me that Vidic vibe of a defender that can completely shut out a striker.

I've still yet to see that from De Ligt & I've honestly seen it more from Maguire in the last year - that ability to just be a pure stop sign centrally for opposition attacks.

I'd see how he does is a back 2 before I judge him to see if he can nail down a starting spot again or if we will end up seeing aerial mistakes and players getting past him.

Injuries? What do you mean? This is his first real injury here. The previous 2 injuries he had he missed 4 games a piece, hardly Darren Anderton.

This is his longest injury stretch in his career, but fans are talking about getting rid (not you specifically) because they're tired of him missing games? A lot of people decide an opinion and wait for something to confirm their bias then run wild with it.

It is frustrating that he is injured for so long but it will 100% be more frustrating for him to deal with and injuries happen. Some of the talk is OTT.

Let‘s try again.

Is he fast enough to be an upgrade on De Ligt and Martinez, minus fitness concerns?

I would say he is average pace for a CB. His WC skill is the playmaking from the back - similar to Licha. Also, taller than Licha.

A 14 game season then.

It sounds like he might be in Rio end of his career territory.

I wonder if this was why Bayern were keen to move him on? One of the only things woodwood ever got right was that we should stop signing players from them!

It could be just fecking bad luck. For Matthijs first of all and by extension, us.

At this point I cant even recall if something specific happened that caused the injury or if he just felt it one day.

Doubt that we will be seeing him again this season.

"one of those things"? One of which things? We don't know which mysterious thing it is, Carrick, that keeps a player out for months, so why don't you tell us?

A back issue can be chronic. This may go beyond football so I can appreciate if Carrick is being sensitive about it. No point in putting added pressure on the player. It's not looking good though. Your back isn't something you fix easily if at all

Some people think its partially about the divorce he's going through over the last 4 months, mixed with the back issue.

He's such a great player, if it's as chronic as it sounds this will be an issue for his entire career which is sad.

Highly doubt Bayern are psychic and know years later his back would cause problems. Why do people always think there is a conspiracy?

I feel for him and really hope this clears up, back problems are tricky and it would be sad to see his career affected by this. He is a good player and seems to be a good character.

Yeah. Could be personal. Could be a doping situation. Could be a genuine injury. I don't know what would be the best case scenario.

I'm taking it at face value, and I worry that his fitness won't allow him to be a mainstay of our first XI..

Where did this rumor come from?

Psychic?

Bayern sold him to us in the summer of 24. They would have had an in depth knowledge of his medical issues. Normally these sort of injuries dont just come out of nowhere.

There's a famous story about the Arsenal medical team warning Wenger that Marc Overmars had an underlying injury issue that would start to cause problems four or five years down the line, so that was why they sold him to Barcelona when they did.

I know that we signed Mount either knowing he had an incurable problem or not checking properly.

Bale spoke on the Overlap recently how he had back problems that hampered most of his career.

If De Ligt ends up needing surgery on his back, it's difficult to see him making a full recovery at the very top level sadly.

Didn’t Gundogan have major back issues at Dortmund? It took him a few years to fix.

It's a back issue. Have you ever had back issues? It really is one of those things. It can go from thinking you are 2 weeks away to end up being 9 months out very easily and just keeps flaring up when you try to return. Went through it myself last year. Who knows exactly what he has, my guess is some bulging disc issues which pinch some nerves and cause everything to seize up. Takes time to heal, but the amount is always in question.

No, I am not a back issues or "one of those issues" medical doctor. Also sorry to hear you had to go through something like that. I assume you didn't have world-class sports medicine doctors at your disposal, however. De Ligt has been out for 4 months, was just hoping to get something more than "one of those things"

I guess not.

Thank you

There's nothing to it more than do physio, rest, recover. Unless you go down the surgery route which is rarely suggested unless it's significantly herniated. Too much risk with the spine... Rio in the latter stages of his career went through similar back flare ups that just wouldn't go away.

What the update then?

International break almost over, and one of our best defenders is still missing from news, updates or pictures.

What is really going on??

Rio spoke on his podcast about how debilitating a back injury can be. He went trick-or-treating with his son when he was a wheelchair (that wasn't part of his costume!)

Back. Carrick said a month ago that he might not play again this season basically, they just don't know. One day it'll just calm down and he'll be fine. Hard to say with back things.

Unlikely he'll play again this season

I'd get rid, not convinced by him at all and he's another made of glass.
No chance to move him this summer. Have to hope he comes back and plays a reasonable number of games.

No one is buying him with an ongoing injury.

Unfortunately he’s not been worth the money we’ve spent on him.

when our players get injured they really get injured, don’t they?

Another case of why you should never ever buy players from Bayern, particularly those that on paper they should be happy to keep?

Not sure how some on here can doubt his quality. Issue is the fitness.
