It's been discussed at length above. People shouldn't be so cavalier about back surgery
Yep, and it’s by no means a certainty to fix the problem whilst adding many volatile variables to the equation.

I am not sure he’ll be himself again, but wish him the best of luck with it.

We definitely need a new CB.

Exactly the most innocuous looking back injury can become very serious and may lead to a lifetime of pain management and reduced mobility. For a high performance sports person it doesn't really get much more serious, there's no real full cure if your back goes. I don't think people on here are getting it. If he plays football again regularly for us it'll be a major achievement.

Never a good sign when a footballer requires back surgery. I don't think he'll play for us again, terrible investment and now we need a new CB.

Jeez. Thats cold. Injuries are part of any sport. He was a good signing with a good fitness record before he came here. He's had one of the worst injuries a player can get through bad luck.

Glad the surgery went well. Hope he recovers well, they shouldn't rush him.

I do feel for the lad taking football out of the equation of course, but I doubt this injury came out of knowhere.

I wish de Ligt all the best with his recovery and hopefully we could see him playing again at the start of next season.

Easily our best centre back option when fit.

Martinez, De Ligt, Mount. We have a great habit of signing expensive players who are always injured.

Finally made public to what was wrong with the lad, how difficult was that than making it a secret?

All silly rumours was flying around such as he had cancer, bad case of depression and was going to have sex change operation, got to love social media nowadays...

Hadn't seen any of those rumours to be honest. It has been openly discussed that he is rehabbing a back problem for months now, I guess some of the internet pondlife decided to make up some silly conspiracy ideas but I don't think his back problem was ever a secret.

People are unnecessarily harsh just to try and point out the finger at the player or the scouting team or the hierarchy.

Now, if we're talking about Zirkzee then sure, he's been an awful investment haha.

It was well known it was a back issue, but also the guy is entitled to medical privacy

I'll give you Mount but the other 2 had a clean bill of health before joining.

Just bad luck, don't think it's fair to beat the club with it

De Ligt wasn't that much was he? Just over £30m?

Martinez has had some very unlucky big injuries which no one can really expect. If Ekitike gets another bad injury is that Liverpool buying injury prone players so just unlucky?

Mount though, yes we should have seen that coming.

Ah that's devastating. Back injuries are shit. Sometimes you just try to make it work with physio and rehab and time, you think it's going well and then it just never quite heals and keeps flaring up. Hopefully the surgery fixes things, but this is a tough one. Really feel for him. Class player, huge loss for United for however long he will be out for on top of what he's already missed. Hope he can just get back to playing regular football again.

Feels like yet another case of Bayern Munich having our pants down. Injuries of this nature don't just come out of nowhere.
Back injuries would actually be one of the most common to come out of nowhere. The most unexpected tweak can ruin someone’s quality of life for the rest of their life

Glad they've made a step in trying to get this resolved. I don't know enough about back surgery, but surely advancements have been made in that area just like they have with knees. Once upon a time you were all done after having your cruciate done, now players usually make a come back.

Anyways, I hope he recovers well and comes back for us. Would rather have him than Maguire.

One of our best players defensively before his injury. Hope he can make a comeback.

Worried now, if he can make a full recovery and return as the same player, I think his desire to participate in the world cup delayed his surgery and fecked us over.

Welp, that's that I think. By the time he returns it'll almost be an year since he's played football. I don't think I've seen anyone return to their former level after being out for that long. We need a new CB again.

Even after this many years, even after signing so many CBs looks like Maguire is still the most reliable CB we have. Madness.

50m euros. So something like £42.5m.

Just seen his post on social media. Get well soon. Hopefully back for the new season and raring to go.

Back injuries are terrible in general. For athletes, they are hell. I really hope he recovers completely.

What was it? Wouldn’t mind posting. An elite centre back on his day. Looked a bit defeated in the kit shoot

He looks the same on this picture. Are we sure he had a sex change surgery?

Gundogan had back surgery and he had a great career after that. We needed another CB anyway. We can’t rely on Martinez and Maguire is old.

Wish he had this surgery in November so he would have recovered by this time.
Nobody in their right mind is going to have surgery on their back without seeing if they can heal it first without surgery.

Player out for most of season with an injury.

Repeatedly explained as a problem with his back.

Player has surgery for long term back injury.

Redcafe: FFS, why was this hidden from us?!?

I find a lot of the discourse around him and his injury to be weird and somewhat disrespectful. People forgetting there is an actual person whose career is in the balance because of an injury that would be affecting him more than it is us as individuals yet all you see is demands to be told information and demands he is sold or talk of how "Bayern had our pants down".

Back injuries are notoriously difficult to diagnose and to live with in how they can flare up randomly. Back surgery isn't exactly a minor surgery or one to take lightly, so it is also a bit silly to act as though he only waited this long to see if he could make the WC.

Rio had a bad back near the end of his time at United...right?

Shame for De Ligt, but luckily United kept hold of Maguire, so there are enough bodies at the back to carry a few older injury-prone players.

This is good news for Heaven! he will be bumped up the pecking order next season.

That’s not a certainty. We are more likely to get a CB in. And we need to.

The injury was started with Ruben Amorim saying in November that it was a "small issue" the six months that followed it was he's a while off from returning yet to he's back on the grass in light training.

Medical privacy is fine if he was dealing with a serious illness. It was injury and some actual clarity would be more helpful than drip fed nonsense given to the media.

Anything on what type of back injury?

The back area is kinda large, so it’s hard to compare to other players previous comebacks like Gündogan. He doesn’t really rely as much on his physique as De Ligt.

First and foremost, I am sure that we all wish him a full and timely recovery. More important than his career is his ability to walk and go about life without serious issue. Fingers crossed for the lad.

Absolute bonus if he can recover and get back to a decent level as a player. At this stage, United will probably be looking at him as a possible future addition to the squad.

Maguire, Heaven, Martinez & Yoro are the main CBs as it stands. Shaw & Mazraoui are both capable of filling in but neither of them can be relied upon due to injury concerns which obviously also blights the planning with regards to Martinez, who has averaged only 17 PL games a season during his four years at United. Godwill Kukonki may step up into the first team squad - the lad is an absolute unit - which may cover a 4th/5th option but I think that the club are going to now need to bring in somebody of quality to play CB.
