Some of our very own fans, just can’t wait for certain players to make a “mistake” (hell, sometimes they even invent a mistake just to have a go at said players) just to stick it to them and/or push an agenda, just to be proven right on the internet. It’s so fecking weird and sad.

DeLigt is a top player, our best CB. I do not prefer any of our CBs to let the ball past them in a cross and depend on someone else. Funny one of our best CBs Rio also agrees.

Some of our fans don’t like anything bad said about any of our players on an internet forum

Debatable. Yoro currently holds that title In my opinion. Thought De Ligt was decent enough today, shown some nice physicality over this last 2 games.

Sure its up for debate. I will go with De Ligt, I don’t see Yoro dominating his CF like De Ligt does. But he is also a top player and will likely surpass De Ligt

Him and yoro would be excellent as a CB pairing. If only Amorim would get his head out of the sand

Fair enough. Think Yoro's ability on the ball edges it for me but you're right De Ligt has been pretty good physically this season.

That post wasn’t particularly aimed at you but the last bit is actually quite incorrect (about me anyway). I’ve got no issue criticizing players when it’s deserved. Whether that’s Bruno, de Ligt or anyone really. I support the club and we all want what’s best for the club. I try not to have particular biases or agendas for or against any specific player. Albeit, we all have our “favorites” of course.

Played really well again, not sure what he was doing for the goal though, should have done more there.
Such a shame, it was a titanic performance other than that one moment. You just know Maguire or another more experienced defender would have cleared it just in case

Damn, I had such high hopes going into the season, and even last week, I felt we performed very well against Arsenal. But this performance today was a real sucker punch to all that preseason hope of mine :(
Tough away game. With an unsuitable midfield, was always going to be a tough game this one. I think we’ll be fine even today we see some better things; we need to sign a midfielder clearly

Maguire usually leaves it in that situation. We conceded plenty of goals last season with him doing exactly that.

It’ll be a good season. We were the better team against Arsenal and a goalkeeper howler cost us it. We were the better team today and missed a pen, plus some other glorious chances.

How many games last season were there where we created feck all and were decidedly second best over 90 mins. It’ll be alright

True, true. Let’s hope there’s some movement in the GK and midfield department before the window shuts. Alas, let me not derail the thread. Off to the Amorim thread it is for me.

Listen matey, I’m a completely one-eyed Maguire fanboy…..possibly the only one, but I am. In my hypothetical scenario he cleared that into row Z, then flattened Smith-Rowenfor good measure

Any CB would break or panic with the sheer number of times teams are allowed to just sprint past our midfield like they aren't there and attack our CBs. I think him and Yoro did some decent damage limitation today, they got absolutely no protection.

Thought he was comfortably our best player watching live. Couldn’t see the goal from where I was. Am happy with him

I thought he was good, and also good against Arsenal but to see that passive defending from him really surprised me. He's been really proactive in other moments.
Yeah I think he is prone to lapses of concentration, and that is the difference between a good and a great defender

Started the season well but partly to blame on the goal. Yes Bruno as well but it was a lack of awareness to try to leave the ball from the cross not knowing whats behind you. He took a risk and and we paid for it.

That goal is on Shaw and Bruno.

Should Bruno follow Rowe all the way back to behind MdL?

All the way back? You mean ten more yards? Why not? He did not have any reason not to.

It looked like Luke Shaw expected Bruno to follow Smith Rowe. The communication between Shaw and Bruno is the issue. Not that the ball goes past someone. That will happen all the time.

He should, and some DMs will occasionally do it but when they do its pointed out as amazing defending. Because even DMs dont do it all the time and CMs certainly dont. They will often pass the player on to the CBs or not track back

Bruno makes the first mistake and De Ligt makes the next not dealing the cross thinking he can leave it and being wrong.

Yeah. It's like expecting Pirlo to mark player all the way back behind Nesta and Cannavaro. Or Scholes in 4-4-2 to follow player behind Rio and Vidic.

It's an unusual thought.

Some right bizarre views on the goal. MDL is marking a Fulham player in the box who is in front of him and he can't get to the ball so not sure how he's supposed to clear it.

The Fulham player is not followed into the box by whoever is supposed to be marking him. Dalot also lost possession in a dangerous area so that's where the mistakes were.

He specifically holds off the player so he cant get to it, leaving it. He can get to the ball he just thinks he doesnt have to. He was wrong

There are several players that can be blamed for the goal. My initial reaction was “FFS Dalot” who probably could have passed the ball to Bruno but tried to turn and break away. That’s where the initial mistake is. After that maybe De Ligt could have done better or Bruno or Shaw could have followed the runner into the box.

Actually thought De Ligt had a pretty decent game again overall.

Sorry, thought you were talking about Shaw, who didn’t do his job.
Goal is on Dalot and Shaw, no question, even if Ekeke carries on his De Ligt nonsense.
Yeah. I'm still pissed with Shaw, but probably more about this whole 3 CBs thing. We play more CBs on defense, but it looks like there's no need / advantage, when both our WBs were all defending also. We have 3 CBs but we're still struggling with every long balls and corners.

It's always funny to watch some fans can't grasp the concept that multiple players can be at fault for a goal, in different phases.

Dalot is pathetic losing the ball like that. De Ligt should try get something on the cross to cut it out. One of Shaw/Bruno has to deal with Smith Rowe.

I always want to look at how we lost the ball in the first place in the lead up to a goal conceded though. One of the understated aspects of being a top team is to stop losing the ball cheaply and reduced the amount of unforced errors in possession. If you do that, the chances for the opposition to get at your defence reduces and your defending suddenly looks better, and your offensive opportunities increase and suddenly your attack looks a lot better.

Weird discussion on this page. There’s one player above all others who gets the blame for that goal and it’s Dalot. The lazy way he gets dispossessed is fecking amateur hour stuff. Then watch his appalling effort to stop Iwobi crossing the ball (which was his chance to redeem himself) Two truly diabolical bits of defending. Everything else that went wrong is at least defensible. There’s a definite lack of communication (maybe a more vocal keeper could have helped organise?) but the only really awful defending is all done by Dalot.

Yup - he defended as if he has been playing for 110 minutes rather than 10 and was out of gas. It was shambolic.
