Rooney had nothing at all to do with Memphis not having the right minerals to be a success at United. I'm a big believer in the old saying 'you can't get blood from a stone'. Everything has limitations, Memphis is most likely not good enough.
He looked like he couldnt handle the expectations as well.

I found myself rolling my eyes at his celebration after his first goal against Luxemborg. I just don't like the guy.

Is there absolutely nothing Rooney can't be blamed for?????
I am not saying it's Rooney's "fault", just purely Memphis was the one to lose out when Martial got moved to the left to include Rooney. With the later emergence of Rashford also it's pretty much been the nail in the coffin.

Obviously he's mainly got himself to blame, but I can't help but feel it could have been different.

Memphis was doing fine until LVG decided Martial would be better from the left wing, and that the captain "shall Always play" something then changed and his lack of playing time really hurt him. His cameos were never effective and it's gone wrong ever since then.
No not true, Rooney was playing behind Martial and Depay kept delivering poor perfomances and Lvg moved Martial to the left

Haha, that was so cringe worthy. No one wanted to do it with him, it was so obvious what he tried to do since a lot of teams have been doing it lately, and I thought it was weird he didn't think about it before that something like the mannequin challenge just doesn't work on the pitch as a celebration.

So that's what he was trying to do? It had to be some daft fad. He annoys me. Give me a Nani back flip any day.

Really? Anytime I've watched him for the NT, he's generally been extremely poor.
Unless of course he plays a low ranked team...in which case he does well.
He does the same at club level: he punishes minnows, but gets punished by EPL teams.

That's quite a well reasoned, well thought out argument, you've put forward, there. Give me some time to properly respond to all the salient points you made and I'll get back to you in due course. Thanks for the input.

Skills is clearly a man of few words.
Either that or he is unable to explain his thoughts using words.
He's like a 16 year old boy about to get laid for the first time - so excited, so much to say, so much to do...and then ....Bollocks!!!

My reaction was the same. I don't dislike the guy but I can see why a manager may think he's a bit of a tool. Lingaard annoys me on the same level with his pathetic celebrations - you just want to twat him.
If Lingard did what he did vs Leicester in every game then I wouldn't be bothered by him at all. Same if Memphis did what he did against that Europa team last year.

Their main problems are their inconsistency

He'll be buzzing after those two goals for Holland. I'd definitely play him against Arsenal.

Please not, lets just play our best team. Sadly for him that doesnt contain him. Maybe a cameo if we are leading by a decent margin or need something else from our attackers. He'll probably not even make the squad, mind.
Our best team is the one thats in form. Memphis (this week) is in form.

The alternative is probably Rooney or Rashford at LW. I think Memphis can play that position better.

Is Martial out? Hell, I'd rather playing Young in left wing than Memphis.

I would. Last game against Arsenal he was quite good. Bellerin was nowhere to be seen that game thanks to Memphis, and that little flick he did showed his class again.

When was that and what did he do? Genuine question - I rarely follow international football.
The poster was referring to a meaningless friendly where he shone against a very poor Spain side(who still are btw) and in the World Cup 2014 against Australia and Chile where he scored 2 goals. Granted, the goal against Australia was a cracker. But the Chile goal was a tap-in created by Robben.

Really small sample sizes but again people can point to any event and twist it as evidence that fits their argument

Exactly. I don't exactly watch Holland very often but any match I've seen him play, he's been poor.

Did you see the Dutch player next to him? I think it was Berghuis who just stood there watching and doesnt know what to do

Memphis is an idiot, i already disliked him when he played for PSV and wasnt happy at all when he signed for United. He just isnt a very good player.

He played a very good match vs Spain whilst at PSV I think, constantly beating defenders, being threatening, dangerous. I think only even his highlight real has a few ton views.

At the World Cup he was used as a substitute, against Australia(?) when we were level or trailing? he came in and scored a cracking goal and assisted van Persie after completely changing the match. Scored a tap-in vs Chili after, after a run with Robben and was generally very threatening and gave the Dutch NT something else when he came on, hence our interest already to sign him from PSV where he stayed another year, was influencial against teams like Ajax, Feyenoord (which you guys probably call fodder whilst United can barely beat them), influencial with goals against Europa League teams (pretty much our level again). Sure he has been poor for us, no one can disagree, but lets not rewrite history. He has proved before that he can put in performances against big teams, I dont know what he has to do to get close to the level he was before, I doubt he'll make it here as well. I cant see him getting another serious chance and run of games, and he only has himself to blame for that really.

Decent goals though to be fair, the header was superb.
Yes, but goals against Luxembourg, however good they are can't be a measure of a professional footballer's form. If you put today's Rooney against an amateur team he'll probably score a brace. Heck, even if you put today's Pele on a pitch he'll probably score too

Makes sense, I mean, it was 1-1 up until Memphis' brace in the second half. He managed to do in 45 minutes what no other Dutch player could and what apparently Pele and Rooney would have no problem doing.

Ok...

Not a huge fan of the guy, his performances and off field persona but he should get a chance in the team with nobody playing well in that left wing position.

Can't get any sort of start, despite our wingers having not turned up this season. Definitely needs some sort of move, even if just a loan.
A premier league loan would surely be the best bet.

But he doesn't look half arsed when coming on either, just jogs about the place as if it was warm up session.

He is done. I thought Mou would give him some quality minutes against an eredivise team but he obviously rates Lingard higher and rightfully so. And now he has to face a rejuvenated Mhiki who can also do a job on the left.

Interesting. The first post in his thread after the official start of the game on Thursday night, even though it's two days later and not relevant to his performance that night, counts as a thread-mark for the Feyenoord game.

@Damien Any chance you could have some sort of expiry date on a game thread-mark on a player performance thread if the first post is, say, 48 hours after the kick-off time?

Tagging @Niall for that. Nice idea.
