Messi in Miami

What other weak leagues do you watch "incidentally" ?

Tbf before Ronaldo's move to Saudi Arabia the main semi retirement league was the MLS. Now the other main league to watch past it super stars pretend to play is the Saudi pro.

I still don't get why the heck they went for Mascherano as coach, the only good thing it's that the Argie YNT got rid of him.

There were managed by Phil Neville tbf.

Well that was Pre Messi time, but at this stage and with all the bad results from MAschearno in the YNT and even his "bad luck omen" fame he rides nwoadays as silly as it sounds, makes it even more bizarre

Apparently his personal favorite goal he scored is the one he did against us in the CL final.....in 2009 which maybe is him taking the piss, it's such an unremarkable goal considering his unrivaled stache of goals he could have chosen from.

It was terrible way to concede too, one of the most aerially dominant backlines in Europe and they seemingly just forgot Messi was even there.

Nah, he was very young, it was a CL Final, his header it's fantastic in the way he jumped, bended backwards and hitted the ball over Van der Sar. It's among his best and mostly more important goals, that like he said too, might not be the "real best" in comparison with others, but up there nonetheless as the greatest and more important ones.

It was a pretty great header as well, tbf.

Does he deserve a bump for 2 goals and 1 assist?

I remember Rio talking about it, and saying he gambled by purposefully moving a couple yards to defend against different threats, as he didn't think Xavi would play that pass or that Messi would be able to score from it. Which is fair enough tbh. Defending is all about risk assessment, and attempting to identify and nullify the biggest threat. Its easy to criticise in hindsight, but at the time people would hardly have said that Barcelona's biggest threat was a cross into the box for Messi to score a header. Xavi and Messi were just too good and could execute it perfectly and punish the decision.

It actually makes me appreciate Rio as a defender even more that he was concsciously making these kind of decisions. His reading of the game and anticipation was what made him a world class centre back. He'd more often than not be correct, making interceptions, being in the right position at the right time to make a tackle or block a shot. That day he was just out manoeuvred by the greatest midfielder of all time, and greatest player of all time, in arguably the greatest club side of all time.

I don't post about Messi in Miami because whatever he does there really doesn’t matter; it is semi retirement.

But, today in the WCQ vs Chile, he produced an absolutely amazing through pass along the grass that should have resulted in a goal. Ive seen him produce these line breaking passes so many times, really amazing.

Still the yardstick interms of playmaking and dribbling when at his best. If he gets to the 2026 world cup in good health, who knows...

Why can’t Ronaldo do that, come in late in the game, that would perfect for him when the opposition is tired.
But no, fecker has to start.

Still won’t be able to play like this. His best contributions by far for a very long time have been those customary tap ins.

I know, my point is he should play less time. I’m tired of him.
I’m Portuguese but I’m not blind, Messi is the better player.

Tbh i feel both Argentina and Portugal would be better off without them. Even as subs. Because always going to be Messi FC and Ronaldo FC until they genuinely retire or are left out of team. They've both had their crowning achievements. Even though Messi had his last dance if he goes into another WC its all going to be about these 2.

As long as you don’t start posting a running G+A total, it should be fine.
Thankfully for us here, G is not the only thing Messi is about, he is so much more than merely that

Because one has nothing to prove and the other walked with a chip on his shoulder his whole life.

he might have aged but he's still the best free kick taker in the world

I know you didn't meant just that, yet It wasn't just the free kick, he had a great match that with a fit Suarez could have been a goleada

The greatest player ever is still pretty great
Deep down everyone knows Messi is the greatest to ever play football, both in skill and in achievements. Some may argue, because it is human nature, but deep down they know. If their life depended on getting it right, they would choose Messi everytime.

Yes, but, allow me to present a counter argument:
