It has emerged that Barca striker, Lionel Messi, earns nearly £600k per week - more than any other player in the world.

Last year, Messi earned £30 (€33.5) Million alone from his wages, which included a bonus for winning La Liga and the Champions League. He is the world's highest paid player, with £570,000 (€635,000) per week from the Spanish giants.

David Beckham is the second highest paid player, with £27 Million for last year. While Cristiano Ronaldo, Ricardo Kaka and Thierry Henry follow suite. Surprisingly Carlos Tevez also makes it into the rich list, in 7th place

José Mourinho is the highest paid manger, with Roberto Mancini close behind. Both earn around £11 Million per year!

Jeeeeeez. He could possibly end up a billionaire.

Sounds a bit unlikely though.

I seriously doubt he'd get that much from just Barca but wouldn't surprise with all image rights and everything he earned that much. Would of thought it would of been closer to like £15mill-20mill though but what do I know....

That includes image rights, it must do. No club can have such a huge chasm between their top and second top earner.

I'm sure it's just the media sensationalising again, the £600,000 figure per week is his wages and endorsement deals total.

France football apparently...
Highly respected magazine France Football has released its annual list of the highest earners in world football on wages alone.

Following a scintillating week, where he has scored eight goals in three games, few will begrudge Lionel Messi for earning 33 million euros a year from Barcelona and coming top of the list.

The Argentinean schemer comfortably tops David Beckham ’s current annual salary at LA Galaxy of 30.4 million euros a year.

Futebol Finance, a Portuguese marketing agency, has released a list of the top 50 footballer salaries for this season. The guy at the top is obvious, but the rest of the list is pretty interesting. Do keep in mind, though, that the wages shown are just for this season and this season alone. Also, try not to laugh when you spot Robinho's name above Drogba or Torres.

Football will surely crash and burn at some point with the ridiculous fees and wages being thrown around. It must, this boom, boom, boom trend cannot continue forever.

If it's wages and sponsors then I'm surprised to see Carlos Tevez that high, as he doesn't seem like the type to get a lot of endorsements.

So most of his money is likely to come from City? But he wanted to play for us, honest. Ferguson didn't like him though, or something.

BBC SPORT | Football | Europe | Messi signs new deal at Barcelona
Barcelona's Lionel Messi
Born in Argentina, Messi has spent his entire career with Barcelona

Argentine forward Lionel Messi has signed a new contract at Barcelona which will keep him at the Nou Camp until 2016.

The 22-year-old, widely expected to win the Ballon d'Or in December, has penned a two-year extension to his last deal.

Messi, who helped Barcelona win an unprecedented treble of Champions League, La Liga and Spanish Cup last season, has a buy-out clause of £225m.

Though born in Argentina, the playmaker has been at Barcelona since he was 13.

Reports suggest Messi has become Barca's highest earner, with his salary increasing to 9.5m euros per year (£8.1m).

Coach Pep Guardiola expressed his delight at seeing the influential Messi commit his future to the Catalan club.

"It's an immense piece of news for the club and for the player that Messi is renewing his contract," said Guardiola.

"It was the same with Victor Valdes and Xavi - people go to football to see the best and that's what they are.

"It's a privilege for Barca to have some of the best footballers like Messi."

That article actually says:

The £200,000 a week after-tax deal that Ronaldo signed when he left Manchester United for Real Madrid makes him the biggest earner by football salary, but Messi's burgeoning commercial deals and a £3.6m bonus for winning six trophies with Barcelona put him out in front.

Must be big amounts of bonuses for winning the CL and La Liga which is fair play really. Deserves to earn more than anyone.

That's partly to do with the pound dropping against the euro in the last year. Otherwise we'd be ahead of Barca.

It's not just his wages, it's everything combined. I remember reading a similar list this time last year, Ronaldo and Rooney were earning similar ridiculous amounts but through various other companies for endorsing their products and sponsorship deals. The top footballers earn those amounts nowadays.

True but apparently Barca are the second richest club after Madrid, they have money to blow

It's not Barca's money. If I'm not mistaken, the image rights he gets from Barca is a relatively small amount, like Rooney does from United.

And the fact they they negotiate their own television distribution deals in. Which is fine for Barca and Madrid but it's creating a large chasm in quality between the top 2 and the rest in Spain. You'd think something has to be done before it gets out of control.

Individual TV deal or not, we'd still be ahead of Barca, given a favourable exchange rate.

Agree with you, La Liga is a 2-tiered league
