Michael Carrick | 2026/27 Manager Performances

The sooner he goes back to the more counter attacking approach we saw last season, the better it will be for us and the higher we will finish this season. If we persist like this, might as well start the search for the new manager now.
The problem with that is, we have to try and win the league sooner or later and that football usually results in us only going so far (Ole, Jose, EtH…all found that out). The defensive line is a bit of a mess so far.

Whilst no one is saying Carrick is an elite manager; anyone having a back 3 of Dalot, Maguire and Shaw is toast.

Yes he can not play them, but Yoro/Heaven make too many mistakes at the minute (that is also on coaching) and not sure they will improve to become the centre pairing.

There is no coaching. Just punt and hope for the best. If he’s smart he should just stick to what he did last season.

I hope that Carrick is just demonstrated how shite of the quality of our both full back (especially LB) rather than trust them....

Lose this and he should be in a world of trouble. Not just because of the results but the way he selects and sets up the side with the glaring deficiencies the average support can see.
I desperately wanted Carrick to work but he looks so far out of his depth.

Yeah comes across

I’m more worried he’s out of his depth. He has a whole new midfield. He’s been backed appropriately so far. We just need a left back and we should be fine for now. But he should be doing better than what happened v Hull.
Backed? We still have the same defence as four years ago when we lost to Brighton on opening day. They were shit then and they are shit now. It’s just not good enough to progress with these players. Maybe one or two but not four the same players.

Ipswich are going to let us play on the counter?
There's ways to drag teams out or force it into a bit more of a transitional game. Trying to play slow possession with Maguire being on the ball constantly is just not it, just like last week.

The board have placed way too much trust on him and honestly he never should have been. He came in and won games but anyone with working eyesight could see most of the performances were poor

Fine, they stuck with him. Then back him. He so far has not shown to be a very tactical or inspirational at a big group level (based purely on his beyond dry interviews so happy to scratch this point as could be well wrong), but he may be good at a man manager and vibes manager so that requires top players with right attitudes.

You can't give a manager like this the squad we have when we have all competitions and expect an easy top 4 and decent cup runs

That football can also win the league. Ole and Jose came up against Pep getting 100 points. It's a different world, and currently transition football is dominating the league and teams aren't focused as much on dominating the ball as before.

But as always, any style can win. You have to choose your system based on your squad of players. Ours suits transition play back to front basically.

We can’t revamp the whole squad in a single window. We spend big on defence 2 seasons ago, attack last season and midfield this season. We’ll spend big on defence next season again.

And Maguire can still score.

Why is this thread open on matchdays? Should be locked like the player ones, you’ll always get knee-jerk reactions either way.

Amorims thread was locked, so Carrick’s should be as well

Genuinely don’t care if we lose with him. It’s not on him. He’s an above average championship manager that is only here because of who he is.

He was also let down entirely in the market. If he fails the blame is squarely at the feet of
Ineos.

Mad take. Clawed us back to 3rd last season with Amorim's team playing much better football. The team was simply lacking in confidence. I knew once we scored we were going to fly through the match.

Football, a game of opinions.

Poor first half, but I'll absolutely take the 5-2 win.

I have serious doubts about Carrick as a manager, and the football he wants us to play.

But he also clearly needed more positions than just midfield to be strengthened this summer if he was to have any chance of succeeding, so the next few days matter a lot.

If he's a championship level manager what is Amorim? Conference South?

Good result.

First half performance worrying - a Brighton or a Brentford puts 3 or 4 past us in that half.

Back line needs tightening up and I hope we sign a LB.

Front line needs to be quicker and more decisive early - still taking too long to wake up.

I wonder what did he say to the team at half time.

Whatever his version of the hair dryer is, it worked. Great second half and our season is under way now.

I enjoyed the goals and 2nd half. Our individual quality was too much for them but Ipswich also capitulated; they gave up the midfield, dropped their intensity and let us have the pitch.

There are still some big issues. Our out of possession game is lacklustre and non-existent. We lack patience and organisation. Carrick has to prove he can get this group of players playing better than the sum of its parts. The one thing I'm clinging onto is that with more games, we may just play ourselves into a rhythm. Bit like ETH's first 6 months where the games came thick and fast IIRC.

He's the one who chooses to play them. Yoro was excellent when he came on. He was excellent in pre-season. For LB, it literally isn't possible to play worse than Shaw does, so he can put anyone at all in there and it'll be better.

And when Fabregas loses two games in a row? Would you be as quick to label him out of his depth?
It's nothing to do with the results of one or two games. We don't have a proper system. I believe at the top level nowadays you need a footballing plan that is detailed and possession based. Like it borrowed not the Pep/barca/Spanish way is the most dominant and has been for more than a decade. The sooner we get on that bandwagon the faster we will get back to the top. I'd be delighted if Carrick proves me wrong and can bring the big trophies back but I'm skeptical.

One thing I do appreciate about his United team is that we continue to provide a threat once we go ahead, too often in previous iterations of this team we have gotten into winning positions and then completely ceded control of games and played within ourselves and it often cost us with late goals and nerve jangling final moments. At least under Carrick we do look to kill games off and it means that when mistakes like Lichas happen towards the end of a game we're much more likely to still be in a comfortable position and not immediately at panic stations.

I've been posting about this for every manager since the days of Ole. Why not just put the manager thread in the player performances forum.

I guess the idea is to prevent new threads being started not solely about the manager, but adjacent topics like tactics/training etc, though maybe moderators would be able to solve that?
Not sure how technically difficult it would be for @Niall to set up, but maybe there's a way that new threads posted during match-time needs mod approval?

Why he cant instill intensity, fight and confidence in them is beyond me. I hope he makes some big changes like Maguire and gets another LB. Shame we dont have a quality RB either

Probably the most technical united team since LVG. It shows up in dominant possession today. But Carricks work would be cut out in compensating for lack of pace on both end of the pitch.
