Michael Carrick | 2026/27 Manager Performances

Obviously changed something at halftime. Gets credit for that, but also has to take some blame for the previoius match and first half.

As our newly found depth in talent gets more joined up, I'd really like him to start using earlier subs. We're going to be able to rotate the central midfield and basically all the forward positions. Should be using that. Ideally we'd have 4 full backs as I personally believe no full back should be able to last the 90 given the amount they should be getting up and down.

We’ve got a lot of threat going forward now and Ipswich couldn’t live with it second half.

Dalot, Maguire and Shaw will always let you down defensively eventually, they’re too slow a combination. Think we need to see Yoro more but it’s not going to suddenly fix everything.

INEOS need to back him properly and sign him defenders and a striker. Pay up for Hall out of next years budget. Just get it done. Dithering twats.

I actually think Carrick's greatest mistake has been who has been playing at 9, too much congestion in the middle of the park with everyone looking to drop back and no one making runs in behind consistently through the center or providing a focal point in the box for crosses.

Obviously Sesko is not match fit so that hasn't helped. Amad not being fit has hurt us also as Mbuemo does better as a 9 than Cunha at giving the oppo center backs more to do. And finally the Glazers with their financial mismanagement and Ineos inability to get deals over the line has not helped either with the lack of a backup striker or with the left back situation which is by far the greatest issue with the squad.

Ultimately though Carrick needs to play someone through the middle who engages the center backs better and moves the team up the pitch. This, a younger more athletic left back in the transfer market, and a fit Baleba who plays properly are probably the 3 biggest variables for how this season will go in my opinion. One thing that can be said though is that this team would have fallen apart in the same situation at the 35 minute mark under Amorim last season. I give Carrick a lot of credit for why that didn't happen today.

He has enough quality in the squad to be a Southgate like presence and just about get us by. Major question is rather he can take us to the level Arteta has taken Arsenal, because otherwise what are we doing?

Arsenal spent a lot in last few years, we need to do that too.

2 or 3 defenders as a start and a striker.

Great result today, and there's a lot to be said for setting the brilliance of Bruno loose to create and score, but even after a result like today the usual concerns are still present; lack of control, porousness off the ball, reliance on individual brilliance, etc.

I'm hopeful for some good cup runs under him, we're significantly better against teams that give us space in behind.

Mad take. Clawed us back to 3rd last season with Amorim's team playing much better football. The team was simply lacking in confidence. I knew once we scored we were going to fly through the match.

If he's a championship level manager what is Amorim? Conference South?

I'm not say he's bad, but that was the level he had/has. Doesn't mean he doesn't have the ability develop into something great. I just think that that is the exception and the reality is you can't really expect him to transform this team into something great.

Amorim is utter dogshit and I genuinely will revel in all his failures, which is something I have never thought of any of our ex managers. I think I actually hate him.

Last season it took until November to get a positive goal difference and a lot of suffering. I am going to stick my neck out and say that United will beat last seasons points and goals total.

And what was arteta doing in his first 3 seasons.

These things take time. Other teams around us are spending crazy money. You cannot expect carrick or for that matter any manager to take this team to the next level. The expectations should be to build on top 4 this season and target round of 16 or 8 in CL and hopefully a cup.

With the squad we have we should be in the mix come january. We are clearly not favorites but our aim must be to challenge and i think we are good enough for that - as last year under carrick showed

It's nothing to do with the results of one or two games. We don't have a proper system. I believe at the top level nowadays you need a footballing plan that is detailed and possession based. Like it borrowed not the Pep/barca/Spanish way is the most dominant and has been for more than a decade. The sooner we get on that bandwagon the faster we will get back to the top. I'd be delighted if Carrick proves me wrong and can bring the big trophies back but I'm skeptical.
It would be like trying to get on the wave when the wave has already peaked and is cresting. Football is moving away from that meta. We do have a system - its just more focused on creating chances and scoring as many times as possible than simply keeping possession. The reason a lot of our attacks seem disjointed when we play badly is exactly because of our system. It relies on quick attacks with everyone attacking with timing of runs and passes. When players are unable to execute that, it just looks like we don't have a system, but the moment it clicks you can see the patterns all over the place.

We don’t often score 5 goals. Hoping Carrick is one of them managers that doesn’t stop at 3 or 4 and goes for more.

Carrick has all the hallmarks of a Ole mark 2.

He clearly has his favourites like Ole did and he's not going to get very far with Shaw and Dalot as his full backs.

I don't understand how, from today's game, you can talk about a lack of control or reliance on individual brilliance. United won 5-2, had 60% possession, 33 shots with 11 on target. With all but Shaw having a solid game. There were some really clear patterns of play and the midfield moved the ball around well in the middle and on the flanks.

Result is important, and that's how he'll be judged. So called easy fixtures will soon turn into challenging opponents. Can't say how players will cope with that, but he still got little time to find formula, other than Bruno got this.

Sudden change of transfer plans probably didn't helped him too, only added to further confusion, but players will need to start helping him steady things.

I don't see how you can see the squad we have and think we should be challenging. We haven't got the defence to challenge which is why the priority next summer should be to rehaul the defence and maybe then challenge. This season is about consolidating top 4 whilst going deep in the cup competitions, anything more than that is exceeding the capabilities of this team.

It’s insane that all it took was one loss and a 5-2 win to disregard the results from the second half of the season and start crying.

You can tell that a lot of people just did not want him here from the start and would like any opportunity to start moaning

I am still suspecting that we (unfortunately) decided to pass on Iraola, thought Alonso wouldnt come and didnt see a manager option in the market. Surely he's also not earning anything close to Amorim and his contract is 2 years, if things go wrong not sure who should be the interim next. Then who is the next guy. I bet we are also looking at something like Enrique as he may thing he's won everything and might fancy MUFC job after this season. Who knows maybe we will try Guardiola! I wouldnt be surprised.

So Carrick until then migh as well do the job for us, but dont think he's got the tools to push us to another level as our of the ball game is one of the worst in the PL, and thats what makes a good side greatest. COntrol and chance creation from very well organized and agressive pressing, not playing midblock and counter.

Excuses and excuses, lets look at CVHelsea and Liverpool after this season with their problematic squad building too and certainly worse squads than us last year or even after this window. After we get a solid LB option which I think is certain, we should be fine with De Light hopefully coming back, still much better than Pool and at least on par with Chelsea. who will be in top4 and maybe in the race.

Arsenal spent a lot in last few years, we need to do that too.

I love it when people say stuff like this, as if we haven't.

We spent about 160m this summer on CMs alone yet people seem to think it's button money.
Three attackers last year for about 200m too.

I wouldn't conflate a few negative posters with the broader sentiment. In fact, the response to the kneejerk negativity at HT seems to represent the mood of fans more than the negative posts themselves.

I’m the grander scheme of things though we haven’t spent much have we?

150m for three players.

Barcola going for 123m, Anderson 116m, Bouaddi 85m.

It’s not button money but we’ve been shrewd (not that it’s a bad thing)

We will win PL title with Carrick. 100% sure.
This is a team without Baleba, Amad, a number 9 + with Old Maguire, Shaw and Dalot.

If he's given 2 more players we win the league comfortably this season. A LB and a striker who scores 20 league goals we win the league. Problem is top management plan that should be next season activity. If we can get an Evra and Chicharito we cook.
We're so near, if I was United power broker I would sanction a 100m kitty now, to get 2 more players. LB and Striker.

I am crossing fingers we get something over the line, one more player it's a 50/50 affair about challenging

What excuses are there? You think we should be challenging for the title with this squad this season, i think that isn't our aim this season. Expecting this squad to challenge for the title this season is delusional. Its a top 4 squad that still needs work to get it into a title challenging squad.

need to inject some pace in our back line....any of the 4 positions would do but a guy who can play RB or LB would be ideal

Is this big Michael himself posting in here?

Some of the criticisms are so bizarre. Do you think the club asked Carrick is he wanted us to purchase him a world class left back and world class right back and he said "no thanks, I'm happy with Shaw and Dalot. Save your money"?

Shaw is our only left back, and Dalot is our best right back. That's why they're playing. It's not his fault the squad is flawed.

It will be an absolute miracle if Liverpool are in a title race. What gives you the idea that they will be anywhere near a title?

Chelsea have no European football and Alonso has been given 10 first team signings this summer. If they finish above us it would at least partly be down to them addressing every area of their squad in the transfer market, something which we failed to do - as well as their kinder fixture schedule.

With all but Shaw having a solid game. There were some really clear patterns of play and the midfield moved the ball around well in the middle and on the flanks.

The lack of control was evident; we were second best throughout the first half, Ipswich cut through our midfield with relative ease, and finished the match with 4 big chances and and xG over 2. That's an awful lot to give up against a team only just promoted from the championship.

It was really entertaining, and we overwhelmed Ipswich by having much more quality than them all over the park, but we were only in control of the second half (mostly), against a promoted team that folded after a couple of fortunate goals. That needs to be improved upon.

Good adjustments today. 1st half and 2nd half was night and day.

Key players are still injured. I think Amad, De Ligt and Baleba will start when fit. I also think Sesko can play his way into the starting XI.

With Casemiro out and Maguire probably losing his spot, I don't think we can rely on Bruno's crosses and set pieces as much as we did last season. But our midfield and overall passing should be stronger now, so hopefully that more than makes up for it.

The team look lethargic and that’s his responsibility.
Obviously changed something at halftime. Gets credit for that, but also has to take some blame for the previoius match and first half.

Yep. First game United were 2 yards behind a newly promoted Hull in terms of sharpness and intensity. The first half today United were a yard behind newly promoted Ipswich.

It shouldn't be happening that United players are getting out-run and out-fought by newly promoted teams.

Hopefully it's a case of still getting fully up to speed as the season starts, but if Carrick has United kicking off matches like that again, then against better sides than Ipswich the games will be out of sight before half-time (heck, it was that way vs Hull).

He has to find a way to get them fully revved up at kick off. If he can't, then perhaps he needs to get the team to play more compact at first, so there won't be so many gaps for the opponent to exploit from their early lethargy.

He clearly has his favourites like Ole did and he's not going to get very far with Shaw and Dalot as his full backs.
Who are his favourites? If your referring to the defence then he as no other option but to play them. He switched up the attack from the game against Hull, he also changed the midfield and brought Mainoo in and dropped santos. So he isn’t exactly showing favouritism.

I would like to see Dorgu at LB in these *sort* of games. Home against lower table opposition where we expect to be on the front foot. Hopefully Yoro can also establish himself at CB at some point this season. We need pace at the back, and we need to look to develop these young players for us to kick on (in addition to the right signings). We also have a real talent in Sesko who has serious potential.

I suspect it was too early now, given our attackers bar Mbeumo were all at the World Cup so not fully upto speed, and so Dorgu spent all pre-season on the wing. We have Sabah in the CL and Brighton in the League Cup a few days either side of the City match, perfect opportunity to try Dorgu, Heaven and Yoro in the backline, and Sesko upfront. If they perform well then they can force their way into the starting XI.
