Michael Carrick | 2026/27 Manager Performances

Almost exactly 5 years since we scored 5 goals in a PL game. Last was a 5-1 under Ole against Leeds in 2021 when Pogba got 4 assists. Interestingly Bruno Fernandes scored a hat trick in that game as well.

Just give the man a CB and a LB for Christ's sake.

An RB in January or next summer.

Nice to see that stat, I thought about the 5 goals thing during the game too. Want to see more of those!

He definitely needs a bit of support in the market, and maybe needs to figure out what goes wrong whenever we play a 3-4-3 / 3-5-2 type of formation. My take on it is that he doesn’t get to execute his best game plan when the team gets crowded out in the centre against those kinds of formations - Sesko is vital for those types of games, and then we need Rashford and Mbuemo putting in quality crosses. Our fullbacks just don’t have enough attacking quality to support the wingers in those scenarios - I’m sure Wilcox and co have seen the problem too.

Who are his favourites? If your referring to the defence then he as no other option but to play them. He switched up the attack from the game against Hull, he also changed the midfield and brought Mainoo in and dropped santos. So he isn’t exactly showing favouritism.

Some people are desperate to paint him as Ole 2.0, to the paint of making up things. No idea how anyone can say "he always picks his favourites" 2 games into the season..

At this stage no Utd manager should be still having to play Dalot, Shaw and Maguire in a starting back 4.

They weren't good enough 5 years ago, yet here we are wonder why they still concede the same shit goals.

We will win PL title with Carrick. 100% sure.
This is a team without Baleba, Amad, a number 9 + with Old Maguire, Shaw and Dalot.

If he's given 2 more players we win the league comfortably this season. A LB and a striker who scores 20 league goals we win the league. Problem is top management plan that should be next season activity. If we can get an Evra and Chicharito we cook.
We're so near, if I was United power broker I would sanction a 100m kitty now, to get 2 more players. LB and Striker.

I am crossing fingers we get something over the line, one more player it's a 50/50 affair about challenging
This must be a WUM

This must be a WUM

Just because you don't believe? It's a WUM? keep off then.

Do you believe everyone is a negative human being? Even with Amorim here, I said that if he changed his setup, we're a top-3 team. Carrick came in and did exactly that.

Some people want things to go badly just so their own egocentric illusion can be confirmed.
Carrick will win a Premier League title with us within the next two years.

He has lost ONLY 3 Premier League games since he came in. He took a team that couldn't win 3 games on the bounce and turned it into a team that has lost just 3 games in 19. He has a 70% win rate.

We've scored 35 goals — almost 2 goals a game.

We've conceded only 18 goals — roughly a goal a game — with Maguire, Shaw, Dalot, and sicknotes Licha and De Ligt.

I am 100% convinced it's him. If you're not, then sorry, my guy.

If you expect United to control 100% of our games, never be under pressure, score 3 goals every game, never concede, and have our midfield passing rings around every other team, then sadly, it won't happen.

Even Pep was being schooled by Ole and Spurs every other time.

Football is a game of margins, and Carrick has minimized our margins of defeat massively.
Give him a better LB to reduce the goal a game we concede and a striker to elevate us to 3 goals a game, and we win the league easily.

Excuses and excuses, lets look at CVHelsea and Liverpool after this season with their problematic squad building too and certainly worse squads than us last year or even after this window. After we get a solid LB option which I think is certain, we should be fine with De Light hopefully coming back, still much better than Pool and at least on par with Chelsea. who will be in top4 and maybe in the race.
You are saying all this as if the common sentiment is that Chelsea and Liverpool will be challenging for the title.

The only reason some people now think we have a "much better" squad than Liverpool is due how amazingly well Carrick did last season. Before he was appointed as interim most people would have laughed at the idea.

I like this post! I don’t agree but I’d love you to be right (obviously).

I like how the post is about putting things into perspective and how it's a game of fine margins but it ends on this

Appreciate the positivity though.

The equalizer came from a Gerrardesque slip, the Maguire goal was a clear handball and the third goal was a penalty. Ipswich also had a bunch of chances in the first half.

Winning is the most important thing and Carrick has had very good results so far but it's completely fair to have doubts about whether the underlying performances have been good enough.

What miracle, margins or hand of God took us from 15th under Amorim to 3rd under Carrick — with ZERO signings and ZERO pre-season?
I've said it countless times: we have a GOOD squad. Not a title-winning squad on paper, but absolutely good enough to win 25–27 PL games.

15 home wins + 10–13 away wins.

Our problem/handbrake has been manager-induced like trying things that don't make sense. Overcomplicating things. Trying extraordinary solutions when ordinary ones would do.

Football isn't complicated.
Forget the buzzwords. Forget the tactical overthinking.Just win 26–27 games and you're in a title race.

Carrick has 19 games:
13 wins.
3 draws.
3 losses.

Now carbon-copy that over 38 games:
26 wins.
6 draws.
6 losses.

That's 84 points.84 POINTS.

And that's with ALL the problems you and I can see and point to.Now imagine putting a Hall and an Osimhen into THIS team.
We win the title 99%.
I'll bet my two balls we win it this season if we sign a LB and good striker.

Yeah that’s a bet I’d like to win.

You said he needed a striker that would get us firing 3 goals a game. I’m hoping you mean as a team and even then, that would comfortably beat the previous record for most goals scored in a season.

Carrick has all the hallmarks of a Ole mark 2.

He clearly has his favourites like Ole did and he's not going to get very far with Shaw and Dalot as his full backs.
The manager you wanted us to get relegated over because was sacked was playing Dalot as the main attacking threat. I'd say playing him at full back is the better option.

I still feel yesterdays win paper coated our flaws, other clubs should have capitalized by scoring more and put match to the bed.

Carrick is an intelligent man who has won 13 out of 19 matches, so hope he sees these things and improve on that front, having said that I am glad and happy with the result.

Amad,Baleba,Mount will give us few good options too.

I like his record at old Trafford. Barring the leeds game. Thats what we need. Strong at home and decent away.

Can we claim therefore that we are back to where we were before it went all downhill post-Ronaldo and Greenwood meltdown:cool:

We had crazy number of shots in the game overall. I think we would have still won it comfortably had we didn't have those things. Also for the penalty if the foul didn't take place, then Cunha was clean through on goal maybe scores as well.

I don't think last season form is sustainable over an entire season. Carrick did extremely well but it's not happening. That's a win rate better than Sir Alex. We also benefitted from having to play only one game a week. Nobody in this league "wins the title with ease", let alone this team, a new LB and a striker or not.

I think he'll do well to achieve another top 4 finish and that's probaly his goal for this season. Wouldn't be the worst thing in the world.

Buying Ronaldo triggered a series of events that basically set us back by this 5 year period.

Our squad and playing style right now is a (significantly) upgraded version to the one that started the 2021-22 season.

Our squad and playing style right now is a (significantly) upgraded version to the one that started the 2021-22 season.

Main upgrade is in the midfield I feel, where we mainly had McFred versus now we have a better technically capable unit. Attacking wise, the team was on an upswing with Bruno + Rashford, Martial and Greenwood but obviously it all unraveled. Hopefully it wouldn't happen here, we do have more established older players for it to suddenly unravel. Unfortunately in defence, we are still vulnerable to the deficiencies in Maguire and Shaw, five years down the line.

People that don’t appreciate Carrick need to start to… Iraola and De Zerbi have been given tons of money and better squad signings than carrick has been. We’re playing better football than them. Also I don’t think anyone’s matching our 33 attempts any time soon. This is after 2 games.

We did but we had a lot of shots against Hull too. We might have still won who knows but the first two goals were very lucky. The larger point being Carrick still has it all to prove this season. We will have a better idea by December and a much better idea by the end of the season. I'm skeptical but I hope I'm wrong.

Slips, accidental handballs and penalties are part of the game, the only reason United didn't score first was the fact that Ipswich have a 6' 9" keeper, a regular sized keeper and Dalot scores

Ipswich had 3 chances in the first half including the goal. One being from a hoofed ball after a corner and the other from Dalot falling asleep if we're abiding by your standards of individuals errors don't count. We had 32 shots, 60% possession, and 4.56 XG. The penalty came from a nice passage of play that resulted in a one on one with the goalkeeper, and the own goal came as a result of established possession in the final third and good counter pressing. Same for the fourth for that matter.

Who cares about the handball? Those decisions have and will go against us just as well.

Our xG was 4.56 even without the penalty it was above 3.5 that's still more than Liverpool had when they beat us 7-0, Carrick will never win you over no matter what just say that and move on

You can say that about any manager or team at this stage of the season.

I am genuinely curious how do people on here read his the transcript of his press conferences? I find the way he speaks really old. Like he would start answering a question about transfer plans to some word salad on how we have to improve which can come in different ways or maybe other different ways that needs addressing which is why we are really trying and that's always like that at our club in various scenarios that has to be looked at in one way or another. Is it just me?

Word salad, you say

Haven’t watched or read any of Carrick’s press conferences in months, its incredibly boring as he’s clearly not interested in giving the press a zilch, unlike Ruben who gave them his soul.

No point analysing manager's press conferences. Amorim's was analysed so much when he joined as being charismatic, Ten Hag's was a "breath of fresh air", Rangnick was refreshing for its "honesty" etc etc. Fans read too much into these things. Focus on the performances and results. The only thing press conferences are good for are for general team updates.

Same here, I actually feel less confident when I used to watch his pressers so I stopped.

Unfortunately he gives me the same vibe watching him on the sidelines ( not saying that correlates to winning or losing but it's just how he comes across to me)

He is old school and nothing wrong with that. This trend of managers trying to be insightful and explaining their tactics is in part driven by ego and trying to show how clever they are. The real proof is on the pitch, doesn’t matter how ‘insightful’ you are in the press conferences. Anyone can talk the talk, you don’t need to look further than Amorim to see how it doesn’t always translate to the on the pitch performances.

They were really trying to trip him up there and he just delivered a chilled masterclass.

Big game today for momentum I feel. It’s been an easy start and we’ve already dropped points at a newly promoted side. Will be super disappointing if we head into the City game on 3 points from 9.

We’ve had plenty of those moments go against in the past, and it’s little consolation for the manager if we lose because of it. Just have to focus on the results regardless of what good or bad luck is involved.
