Michael Carrick - Manchester United Head Coach

How is it a bad hand when Carrick says he is willing to reintegrate Rashford, surely that would strengthen things when it comes to clubs wanting him

“Bad hand” as in, everyone would prefer if we didn’t have Rashford on absurd wages and still at the club. That’s the bad hand

We would all prefer (including Marcus) if Barcelona had exercised their option, or if he were sold otherwise already, but that’s not happened

So the best we can do is keep up the image that we’re totally happy reintegrating, lest we sacrifice our negotiating position should a suitor appear

I think we’re all saying the same thing here…

Ah now I see what you mean, yeah it's a pain in the arse for Michael that Barca didn't exercise option to sign for €30m

He’s criminally underrated I think. People comparing this to an Ole situation are insane

Really the only complaint I have is out of possession. In possession, he just gets it. Absolutely no concerns dealing with a low block / counter attacking / building up from the back.

I don't get the complains honestly. Yeah we're not pressing maniacs but we do it quite well in phases when we decide to. And we're quite good in a mid block and rarely have to resort to actual low blocks to see games out.

8th longest serving manager in the Premier League currently.

That’s wild. Going to be an interesting season with all the new managers.

Incidentally, I saw a clip of Alonso joining some passing drills in training. Funny that two of the best passers in the league now are in the dugout.

I just hope he doesn't end up being another club legend hung out to dry like we saw with Ole in the end

When I watch a well coached side like an Arsenal / Bournemouth, the way they block moves looks almost like a living organism. The distances between the players are always uniform, the jumps / hand offs between players are perfectly coordinated. It's truly a thing of beauty.

The "press" doesn't have to be high press -- I fully agree. But even just sitting in a mid block, all of these principles apply. When we are in our own half and Bruno starts moving towards the oppo CB who is about to receive a pass, the whole block must jump at the same time. Far too often, we leave some one free in the middle / jump at the wrong time / get the angles wrong / some players jump and some players stay zonal leading to easy passes between the lines.

I still think there's a lot to do for us in this area.

I just hope there's still a plan to do it otherwise I feel this Carrick story won't have a very long tale

I don't think it's such a big deal honestly. Something for us to work on but any decent PL level manager (or even a Belgian second league level manager) should be able to coach a decent Zonal block transitioning into man to man press. It's something for the likes of Holland to work on.

The manager job is so much more than just being able to coach a decent press and I really like how Carrick handles the rest of the job.

Do people think he should be more demanding in terms of transfers just out of interest?

As long as he doesn't look backwards and keeps developing us he will do better.
Ole just couldn't resist Ronaldo again and it cost him.
Let's see what happens with Rashford...

We have no idea what's being said behind the scenes. People assume he would be less demanding than other managers who aren't ex players, but that's just speculation.

I would like to believe he's pushing for more, there is just no way he can be happy with no LB or third midfielder. I think the striker situation is awkward because of an inability to move Zirkzee and Rashford. Mind you Ugarte injury would have also affected the overall budget as well.

People need to learn Carrick is going to keep his council, gone are the days of bomb squads and such like and moaning to the press he just isn't going to do it and neither should he
He should if he's not happy with the number of transfers

Yes. You can be patient upto a point. We're into August and haven't done enough to cope with Europe. His success last Season might be blinding the club to the precarious situation we're in. Too many injury prone players and not enough depth. I get that to a degree their hands are tied with the crap contracts handed to our dead wood.

But now is the time to invest and put ourselves back in as a CL regular and repair our tarnished reputation.

I just can’t imagine Carrick ever stepping out of line to be honest. He doesn’t strike me as somebody that has that sort of backbone, and is probably just more appreciative of the fact he’s here in the first place.

Anything to back that up other than idle speculation?

People should be careful what they wish for. Jose Mourinho's final season with us is a cautionary tale for how quickly a season can unravel once the manager starts airing his grievances in public. Maintaining harmony within the club is more important than issuing public statements aimed to placate a fan base which has understandably lost patience with the club's ownership. We have to assume until shown otherwise that Carrick is privately clear and firm about what he wants from the senior management, and that he then takes what he is given and does the best he can with it. We don't gain anything by drawing more negativity to the club before the season has even started, because as we saw with Mourinho, the only outcome there is that the atmosphere sours and the manager departs, while senior management continues operating as is.

Just the way he is and always seems to be. Seems much like ole in that regard, a proper company man that will toe the corporate line. At Middlesbrough they sold some of their better players and he never kicked up a fuss that I recall, even as the team regressed each season under him.

What good does this ever do really, when has a manager speaking out against his employers ever worked, when has it ever worked for anyone outside of football I mean go on LinkedIn and have a go at your work and see where it gets you

Like how Fergie toed the Glazer company line, in public? I think you’re making unfair assumptions about his character, here. Lacking backbone is very unfair.

I think it's funny how such perceptions develop based on incredibly superficial impressions. Carrick has often been called boring and uncharismatic, yet when his old team mates were asked who was best value on a night out they picked him. Managers like Amorim have a melt down in public whilst Carrick maintains a calmer demeanor in front of the media and so fans assumes the latter is toady or has no backbone, without having the slightest clue what's actually going on behind the scenes.

This is a good point, he never in a million years would've thought he'd have got the Utd job this time last year. The fact was he was brought in as a caretaker to see out the season. Then the board still wasn't totally convinced of him until late on in the season and his reward, a 2 year deal, hardly a glowing endorsement. This is why I think the club aren't backing him in the same way they have with previous managerial appointments. That two year contract is not and was never meant to be anything other than a short term plan until someone who they really want becomes available.

Amorim only had a 2 year contract

Carrick is a yes man in public, but I get the feeling that he has established enough respect within the organization to see his demands heeded. I really don't want to see another manager like Mourinho or Amorim whinge in public and make a spectacle of themselves.
