Michael Carrick - Permanent Head Coach

Pretty sure you've got this the other way around.
United against Liverpool? Aside from a 20 minute spell in the 2nd half, United absolutely dominated that game and it was closer to a deserved 4-0 win than it was for liverpool getting anything. We gifted them 2 goals out of sheer individual stupidity, lost our way for 10 minutes and then were fine after.

Not getting into the Ole comparison, but it's extremely generous to refer to a second half parking of the bus at home to Brentford as being tactically flexible. A mid block and a low block is all we've seen under him really.

He needs to rapidly move away from the underdog approach and make serious progress towards controlling matches if he's to have any hope of seeing out the contract. Otherwise the unsustainability of our current system will catch up with us.

Not worried about that to be honest. We simply do not have the players to control a game in the midfield and so he has cut his cloth accordingly to achieve the immediate goal of CL football. His preference is towards controlling matches based on his tenure at Boro and it has been reported already that he wants to switch the system for next season, it is up to the club to now support that by giving him midfielders who are fit for purpose.

Great news. 2 years with an option is perfect.

Even if we're 13th at Christmas and it's all gone wrong, this is still the right call right now. There simply aren't any guaranteed better options. Players like him, we like him, results have been great and that's without having signed a single player.

Let's try a crazy idea and simply not be the drama club for a while. Sensible appointment of Carrick, 5-6 sensible signings in the summer, sensible start to next season.

if Carrick gets it, does he / the club need to add to the coaching staff to include somebody who is maybe a little more European savvy ?
Danks from Bayern worked with him at Middlesbrough

Feels the only decision to make.

And as always next season will be decided by the level of transfer we make. We need to do the same to midfield that we did to attack last year.
And boost the numbers for the squad because we have about 15 players we can interchange without much cost, but any deeper than that the quality drops right off.

We need someone to match Casemiro's aerial ability and we need De Ligt to not be done.

It is an issue but not that big. Lots of our players are also on World Cup. He would be at the club at the same time as them. He would be missing couple of trainings with backup players basically.

Was he interested/available is another story. He was worth a shot.
I feel like it's beneficial to be in situ earlier rather than later. Less of an issue for returning players, sure, but a manager has more to do, especially in a new club. If we'd hired Nagelsmann he might not be able to join until the last week of July. That's way too late.

Iraola grinds out results and play better football with a worse team than Carrick does. His playstyle is also much more suitable for a top team than Franks was.
He has grinded out draws while playing attacking football, with very different pressure and expectations in my opinion. There is always a stick to beat Carrickn in here, with how he's done the last few months. This was a safe decision, gamble wise. Might prove to be the wrong one, but you can't convince me Iraola will bring us back to the top either. No evidence to suggest he could. The decision is made now, some will disagree but we need to get behind Carrick.

If you think Liverpool bossed us for 65% now I know your doing this to get a reaction. We bossed the first half and got the better of them in the latter stages of the second.
I don't just have to "think" that - I double checked. Both on flashscore and on transfermarkt.de - both of them show the possession number to be 63 for Liverpool. The idea that anybody in that game was "bossed" is a bit odd to me, we converted a shot that happily fell in front of Cunha after a deflection, a fumbled ball out of 1.5m from Sesko and a very well executed shot from Mainoo. Liverpool scored from a gift and a defensive desasterclass. It wasn't a great match from either team - with Liverpool unable to convert their field control in chances while were pretty clinical. We can't diminish Liverpools performance by saying they scored from a gift. We scored from a gift against Arsenal and there are many people in here calling it an excellent game.

Think I'm gonna close this thread, certainly seems to be more negative than positive responses

Good decision. The pressure on a new manager coming in would be colossal following the sheer amount of point Carrick got us after NY. It's possible it won't work out, but that's possible with any manager.

Isn’t that what an open forum is meant to be about though? Differences of opinions being shared? Or do you just want to be told all the lovely stuff by people who agree with you?

I mean the current standard of the League at the moment is poor. If it carries on it's certainly there to be won next season - there's a 4 game swing between ourselves and Arsenal.

Definitely. If City have a downturn I reckon we may be in the mix for one.

Possession isn't the same as control or 'bossing' it.

Most of the time a team who dominates possession will also be controlling the match, but it's not always the case. Think back to how we sometimes played against Arsenal under Fergie, or a few times we've played City over the years under Ole, ETH and this most recent match under Carrick. In all those cases the opposition may have had more possession but it was almost all in the areas we wanted to limit them to, while they struggled to contain us when we had the ball.

Our match against Liverpool was very much in that same style throughout the entire first half, and to a lesser extent for the final 20 minutes or so of the second half. They had more possession, but we were clearly the team controlling the tempo of the match.

I just really hope the board support him better than Ole. We always spent money so that wasn’t the issue but we often made signings with no plan of how to integrate or create a style of play around them. Van de Beek and Ronaldo for instance were just signed because they were available rather than having any plan.

The key for them should be building a team that fits long term regardless of if Carrick works

Not really. He had no great tactical vision. It’s not inflexibility but a weak plan A. It wasn’t a surprise. We hired a mediocre manager with no great accomplishments at the highest level to manage a behemoth of a football club.
He was pushed by Carrick and Mckenna to switch systems when the going got tough and didn't do so until it was too late. It's an example of tactical inflexibility among other weaknesses.

I'm happy to see Carrick appointed. I think he has earned his chance, from the managers we have had since Fergie, the only ones I was not keen on were Moyes, LVG and Mourinho.
and for different reasons, I never felt Moyes was up to it, I felt LVG and his style was past it, and Mourinho's behaviour and personality didn't appeal to me, but entertained me while he was elsewhere.

I expected OLE to be interim only, but again felt he earned his chance. I wonder how it might have worked out had Ronaldo not rejoined.
We lost something as a team overall when that happened.

Poor recruitment hasn't helped many of the managers, so much money was wasted in that area.
No new player coming in is a guarantee, but we seem to have had more than a reasonable amount of big-money failures, which had always happened, but just seems a bigger % in recent years.

From the managers we are told are available and also interested, I can't see any candidates that make me feel they are an upgrade on Carrick.
With suitable additions to the squad, I think we will do well next year.
Finishing third is better than my expectations at the start of the season, and much better than I thought possible at Christmas.

Looking forward to seeing who we actually get, and how we line up and play next season.
Every season I am optimistic, and although in recent years that optimism has taken a battering early on.
Im ready to go again next season. for what will be my 61st season as a United fan
A good win rate playing football that is enjoyable to watch, and I'm happy.
I've suffered far worse and enjoyed much better, but still as optimistic as I have ever been.

Bossing a game isn't just down to possession. We absolutely beat them easily in the first half, should have been 4-0. Second was obviously more mixed but overall we deserved to win this. You can't being up the few chances they missed in the brief 25mins and not include ours in the first. Your doing everything you can to diminish our performance and goals. Like it or not we deserved to win that game. When I say bossed I mean better team and for 65% we was the better team. If you think its the other way round I'd log off, now your just going to believe anything to prove Carrick shouldn't get the job.

Happy to see this is going to be resolved in next few days. There is a few managers I’d have been ok with seeing get the job but more than happy to see Carrick retain the position for next season based on what he has done in last few months. The players obviously are right behind him and I imagine the majority of match going supporters are too, so it seems right to give him the chance to coach the team next season. It might not work out, but I think if we said thanks and bye right now, the next coach would be under immense pressure to perform straight away, so it’s a pretty safe call right now to continue with him.

I am concerned myself about the performances, however hopeful a better midfield will help improve that. You also can't take away credit for those results he has achieved since taking over.

Don't agree with this at all i think it's an obvious mistake.

However, it's done now I'll back him to the hilt and I hope you come back to me in 3 years telling me I'm wrong. I love Carrick and hope he does the best for united.

I'll not be one for jumping on the first bad set of results and wanting him out. He deserves a proper and real chance

I hope those not wanting him also back him and give him a proper chance

Regardless, Carrick has to prove that he’s a high quality manager first. Plan Bs and flexibility are value add on qualities.

Why? It's understandable, no? I'm all for him becoming permanent manager, but I do understand people disagreeing and having reservations.

More than happy with this appointment. The only target when he came was getting UCL football. That has been achieved with games to spare. He deserves a chance to build a squad that can do more than get top 4.

I understand reservations, however some have basically wrote off any hopes for next two seasons

Yeah, I agree. The point I made was more that he's not necessarily the same as Ole just because of the coincidences we've seen so far.

Im happy for Carrick, the ex player and the person.
Carrick the full time manager looks like a mistake to me.

There’s nothing in the entirety of his managerial career to this point that shows he’s capable of succeeding in this role long term.

A bright start here and at Boro are the extent of the height of his performance as a manager to this point.
I don’t think he has enough of the personality required for it either.

I don’t doubt the impact he had as a caretaker but that’s what his role was and that’s how it should have ended.

Ultimately absolutely nobody was lobbying for Carrick to take the role full time post ETH. The idea that we’ve stumbled onto the right man because of 15 games is inconceivable but here we are…

Who has? I feel the majority just think he's not the guy to win big trophies, which I feel the squad is a good transfer window away from right now (CB, LW, CM, CM). I completely get the reservations, he's never managed in the top flight of any league, never won a trophy and is quite inexperienced as a manager (basically has 3 seasons at Boro and 3 games at United as caretaker previously + 20 odd this time without nay cup games). Let's hope he does super well but it's completely fine to have reservations about someone who has never won anything.

Feck, I have reservations but I see no reason to be negative. The players like him and he won a lot of games.

Ya, giving it to an Iraola who no one has any idea whether he can handle the pressure, seems like a worse idea.

It's not what i would have done but i totally get it. He's had great results, loves the club, and the players seem totally behind him. Time to back him bigtime. I feel like I'm being naive but I have to hope we can achieve big things soon under him.

We don't have any idea if Carrick can handle the pressure. It's all well and good when you're the interim, get some decent results and a nice new manager bounce but once you're the main man it all changes. And the "players really like the manager" is such crap, I've heard that for all our managers since SAF. Luke Shaw has been coming out with comments like "the best manager I've ever worked with" for almost a decade now.

Honestly, as long as we don't feck up recruitment massively, as we almost always do, Carrick is fine as a stop gap. I just don't like that we seem to be playing worse and worse. But that's also down to our extremely slow midfield imo.

Why have you not mentioned the play that led to Sesko's chance before the goal, or the play that led up to Mainoo's goal?

I'm not so sure about this appointment.
I love Carrick and he's done a great job but I want a manager to be feisty on the touchline like Emery.
He instills fire into the players.
Here's hoping that Carrick will prove me wrong.
