Michael Carrick - Permanent Head Coach

Luis Enrique will eventually come here at some point. It's his destiny. And Real Madrid as well. He will be a very good fit. Great head on his shoulder and a proper character. He might also end up at Real. But for now, Michael Carrick will do nicely. He earned it. Better appointment than most of the previous ones we've had since Sir Alex retired.

It's about building the team with the right characters now.

I'm not so sure about this appointment.
I love Carrick and he's done a great job but I want a manager to be feisty on the touchline like Emery.
He instills fire into the players.

Here's hoping that Carrick will prove me wrong.
That's just a personal pecadillo, it means nothing in real terms. Touchline theatrics are mostly cosmetic. Is Arteta what you want?

So you still believe he would want to manage us in his late 50's then because I'm not sure he will come here then

Luis Enrique is about to be on around 20 million a year. Unless there is a change in ownership, you live in a fantasy world if you think United are offering any manager that much money, or that Enrique is taking a pay cut to manage United.

Yeah would definitely need richer owners

A manager who understands and emphasizes playing through the midfield. Feels good man.

Need to get him some more proper technical players to compliment Kobbie this summer.

Ole understood the strikers, etc.

Carrick has done surprisingly well, when he took over i certainly didn’t imagine we’d finish comfortably in the top 4, but it’s been a fecking odd season all around. It’s not like many thought Liverpool would bag 4th after the way their season played out.

Part of the point was a settled identity, building a team around an idea and then having a solid structure where the manager isn’t the core identity of the the club. Not sure how that works out with going from Amorim to Carrick, and i’m not sure if it’s a result of more suitable options not being available (can’t be that difficult) or if the higher ups are convinced that Carrick is the right option.

Hope he does ever so well, but i’m not overly optimistic.

I am not sure about Carrick getting the job permanently. Would like to see how he manages in the Champions League first. Keep him as interim head coach til Christmas and if we do well in the group stages of the Champions League the give him the job permanently.

I don't think it's the right decision, but I also don't think it's a bad decision. Don't expect more than a steady season, probably a tough top 4/5 fight.

I suppose that is pretty good after the crap from Ten Hag and Amorim.

I think he’ll do well if we have a good summer which is a real worry with the state of the squad and Europe on the horizon next season. At this point I’ve more faith in Carrick than INEOS who as you mention have been all over the shop since taking over.

Which is a shite predicament to be in tbh but Carrick knows what this club is about and where standards should be set. Hopefully he can provide some continuity in collaboration with the higher-ups to get us back on the path to where we need to be.

I'm made up for him and for us we need a bit of familiarity after the shit shows we've had these last few years yeah he might not be the best manager in the world but where are we gonna find him?

I'm fully behind him and hope he breaks the duck as the first English manager to win the premier league.

I mean the current standard of the League at the moment is poor. If it carries on it's certainly there to be won next season - there's a 4 game swing between ourselves and Arsenal.
Is the standard of the league poor? I feel that we have at least 5, possibly 6 CL spots. Our performances in the Europe comps were pretty damn good. Casemiro in the Rio interview mentioned that while playing in La Liga, the resource disparity between Real, Barca and to some extent Atletico with the rest of the league is massive. He specifically said that every team in the PL has national team players, all teams have very good players, which is not the case in the other big 5 leagues. 11 of the top 20 clubs by revenue are PL clubs.

I would argue that the lack of resource disparity amongst the PL clubs means we are constantly beating the shit out of each other and the margins are much thinner than in LaLiga, Germany or Italy…

I'm glad there's conviction and can't really argue against him being given the chance. Two year deal is about right, now let's focus on the summer.

I quite strongly disagree with this take on Cunha and Mbeumo. I feel as though the fact that our performances have been absolutely fine (arguably a lot better) when switching to Carrick's 4-2-3-1 from Amorim's 3-4-3 is a vindication of the strategy to essentially just sign two very decisive attackers last summer given how poor our forward line was.

There's nothing massively clever about it but it was, I would argue, a very sensible move since you could say with reasonable confidence that the floor for both of these guys would still be respectable. Maybe we're not seeing them at their absolute best but even then, their level is good enough to secure a top four spot.
To be fair, I did agree that we needed at least one adult in the attacking room just to provide some level of goalscoring and not completely rely on the growth from our youngsters. However, my point is: regardless of what you think their floor is, is it not a problem that we now will never see their ceiling because of a formation switch? It’s not like nobody could have seen that coming.

I’m quite happy with this if true. We’ve played well on occasion under Carrick, results have been pretty decent all considered, morale seems good, and in Holland he has an experienced 1st team coach alongside him.

Enrique was my first choice, but he’s clearly not available. Everybody else felt like a massive gamble, and Carrick’s chances of success feel about as good as any of the alternatives.

This should be the only sentiment on display after what we’ve dealt with over the past couple seasons.

He’s done absolutely brilliantly. Fully deserves the job and our support. End of.

Carrick deserves his chance.

I have my worries and this is a big gamble for sure. However, I'd rather gamble on someone like Carrick who's done a great job so far and gets the club, than some tactico.

Time to get behind this.

Backing Amorim last summer was the fatal mistake from INEOS. Could be Cunha and/or Mbeumo are just decent players we significantly overpaid for which many here worried was the case at the time. Still have hope for Cunha but building the squad for Amorim last summer has definitely blown up in our face with these two signings.
I wouldn't say that. I'd rather say that they have been brilliant as floor raisers but perhaps not the ones to take us to the top as bonafide starters. They have contributed a lot to us most likely ending up 3rd, hardly 'fatal mistakes'.

I like this appointment. There are gaps to be plugged in central midfielder. But as a former central midfielder himself and having seen the team up close, what better ex-player than Carrick to have to provide insightful inputs to the club to identify the exact players he needs. I think the last game where Mount played centrally, he was trying to see if a central midfielder could be found among the existing players.

Didn’t say they were though. Carrying on with Amorim was. Though we’ve luckily come out of it with CL football next season so not exactly fatal, which is wild. As well as Carrick has done we’re lucky the league is in flux at the moment or that surely wouldn’t have been possible. But at the end of the day £130m is a fair wedge for two players who look like “floor-raisers” as you put it. But as I said I still have hope Cunha will be more than that.

Can't help but feel we are making a big mistake (yes, I'm an unhappy twat). Hope he proves me wrong big time.

Emery who failed at the big clubs. He is a typical underdog manager.

This appointment is fine and the contract makes sense

I'm fine with Carrick. We've tried every different type of manager and nothing's worked. We need to have a good transfer window, and hopefully Carrick will make sure his back room staff are staying up to standard. He shouldn't hesitate to replace if there is a need for it.

I wish him luck and will support him. He's also low key and not fussy or controversial or whatever, and I feel we need that right now.

Crossing my fingers it all works out.

What "big clubs" did he fail at? Only one comes to mind us Arsenal and the boardroom support structure and playing squad wasnt there for him

He's got a good record of winning. His Europa League triple defence is insane as it's with Sevilla.

Sevilla
Paris Saint-Germain

I think a few things worked in favor for Carrick.

1) This being a world up year, so all potential coaches who may get the sack after poor display such as Nigelsman, Ancelotti and Tuchel are focused and it will be only until July you would get to know whether they are available. By that time, its already too late and any potential signings would like to know who is the coach and whether they would be suitable for his style of play. For potential signings this is massive so we could not have jeopardize our season due to managerial appointment.

2) The coaches currently available such as Glasner, Iriola and Emery would be a sideways step from Carrick. You could argue they have more pedigree, but I believe the players would not respect them as much as Carrick and our season would go downhill because of that. If we had Enrique or Tuchel available then they would command respect for their achievements and players would get on board quickly.

Goodluck to Carrick, hope he smashes it here. The summer becomes even more critical now, hope we go out properly and spend 250M or something with more than 160M being spent on Midfield with at least 3 signings, the rest on LB and Striker.

I’m never quite sure what to make of Emery, especially his teams playing style, but his achievements are pretty impressive.

2+1 is a great contract. It gives him a chance to stay competitive in the first season with, hopefully, some progress in style and what not. They can activate the extra year and give him another season to see if he can push on. Otherwise, we can part ways and it wont cost a fortune. It seems like a smart, economical choice.

The biggest thing we have to give credit to Carrick for is the winning mentality. I've said it before, winning matches feels good and its better than any data point or statistic available. At the very least he's got the players enjoying their football and winning matches....consecutively. That will be crucial going into next season.

He's not even interim now. He was simply given a contract until the end of the season and now he's getting a new one.

It doesn't matter anyway. If he does well he stays, if he's not - he's gone.

Absolutely delighted with this, Carrick deserves his chance.

Now, need to go and get two first team midfielders - Andersen / Tchouaméni and Mateus Fernandes would do nicely. Add another LB, and potentially an attacker, and we have got a good team for next season.

we should also sign players on interim basis, see how they do until Christmas

Overall, the league is strong. But the top teams are not great right now.
