Michael Carrick - Permanent Head Coach

I'm happy to see Carrick being appointed manager. He was top class as a player and he has shown to be a very good manager as well. Young and developing, yes, but very good none the less.

He might not be Sir Alex yet but he doesn't have to be either. He knows the club in and out, he is English and he is not stupid or has an inflated ego as some others (looking at some of the well known pundits).

I heard one of the pundits (Scholes? Rooney? Carragher?) say something along the lines of: I don't know what Carricks playing style/philosophy is like. It's defensive at times, offensive at other times bla bla.

Well, that my dear pundit is the hall mark of a smart man. If the other team plays a 4-4-2 I might want to match them with a 4-4-2 if I feel my players are better man vs man. But on the other hand if I feel the other teams CMs are better than mine then I might opt for a 4-5-1 in order to gain control centrally and not concede goals. Like Mourinho said about Amorim (well, a blatant dig) only stupid people live and die by their philosophy. Ancelotti swore that he would never use a #10 but then he got Zidane at Juventus and had to adapt because he had bloody Zidane in his team.

I remember reading on here a year or two ago an interview with Rooney when he was talking about the lads playing Call of Duty on the team bus. He said when you heard a grenade clinking along the ground seemingly out of nowhere that was Carrick, just quietly getting on with the job. I really like that.

My expectation is precisely the opposite. I think that one of the main arguments in favour of Carrick from Ineos's perspective is that he is much less likely to get in the way of what they want to do re squad building (vs more proven options like Alonso or Nagelsmann, who would likely have made demands in terms of player recruitment).

If Carrick can steward the side to a couple of top 5 finishes, that would buy Ineos the financial headroom to overhaul the squad in the way they want, and build the foundations for a top class coach to join in 12 - 24 months time, when hopefully the squad is in a good enough state for a title challenge.

I don't think that plan is actually going to work in practice and I personally wouldn't have appointed Carrick to the permanent role, but I can understand the club's reasoning here and it's not the worst strategy from their perspective.

Realistically, the only way Carrick leaves next summer is if we don't qualify for the CL, a scenario in which there will almost certainly be clauses in his contract reducing the compensation.

I'd love us to actually care about things like performances and style of play. But I don't for a second believe we'd be proactive enough to get rid of him for those reasons alone if he gets CL football again, even if the football is poor. So from the perspective of his contract, it's kind of irrelevant.

Yes, agreed. I don't think Wilcox or Berrada give a damn about the 'game model' at this point, not after Amorim. They'd surely take 5th place (assuming that is UCL again) if offered now. I would too, frankly.

Feels like they kind of abandoned that when they appointed Amorim.

Thing is, being back in the UCL and appointing someone like Carrick is an opportunity to implement a club 'play style' this time. They can try and sign the types of players that could work under a lot of managers, removing the need to completely rip the squad up every time a manager doesn't work out

Unfortunately there will be many on this site that will secretly prefer Carrick to fail (United to do bad) just so they can be proven right.
This stuff again. Load of absolute nonsense. If anything being a club legend will want people hoping he succeeds even more.
Will openly admit I don’t think he’s the right choice and I don’t think he’ll succeed but would be over the moon if the guy who did turn this around was an ex player, well respected and who’s also a really good character.

I absolute hated Amorim in the end for his antics but it never stopped me wanting us to win and I assure you the overwhelming majority are the same.

Yeah, I think the recruitment aspect of all of this is absolutely central to the club's thinking. We need a massive overhaul in the next three or four windows and that work needs, as you say, to be managed by the club to ensure we don't make the same mistakes we did under Ten Hag and Solskjaer.

Ineos probably feel that the side has found its floor in terms of performances under Carrick in the past couple of months and we're still picking up results. If he can keep the side ticking over at about the same (or, hopefully, slightly better level following summer recruitment), that should stabilise the club somewhere in the upper mid-table/top 4 zone where European football qualification places are doled out, leaving them (Ineos) to get on the with job of recruiting players.

I am in the same boat but I can understand them given that Carrick earned the job by surpassing all expectations so they were put in a corner by circumstances. Given what he has shown so far, I am not that worried as long we can get the recruitment right and add the much needed depth.

He has the basics covered - he knows the club, was there during our decline so he knows how we got there, he is intelligent and has the trust of the players. More often than not, these things are enough if you can give a coach a team strong enough to compete regardless of the limitations of the coach.

So the biggest focus has to be on squad building, whatever happens with Carrick next season it won't be terminal if we get the signings right. If he maintains us in the top 5, like you said, then we will get close to title through incremental improvements like Arsenal did because soon players like Mainoo, Heaven, Yoro and Sesko will be coming into their own.

Anyone who holds that view are not true fans.

I didn't want carrick to be appointed however he has been and I'll back him 100% now. I love carrick as a player and I hope he proves the doubters which includes me wrong. I'd love it if he's still the manager in 2040 as that would mean he's been a great success.

I also personally won't jump on his back on the first set of bad results either. All managers need a chance and all managers go through bad spells.

As far as I'm concerned now it's all decided, it's time to look forward and I hope he gets all the backing he needs to succeed

Onwards and upwards
I'm in completely the same boat. Of course I desperately hope he succeeds and the likes of Arteta and Kompany show an inexperienced coach can possibly work. So now it's all settled I'm 100% behind him.

If you think about it, his decision-making up to this point has been fantastic e.g. appointment of Steve Holland. That one move probably got him the job - recognising he needed a top class coach alongside him.

I now think he needs to go further and go and hire more of the same. The talk of the Bayern guy is exciting. Then of course it's the players he gets in and ships out that will determine his success.

The one major doubt thus far has been the performances so I have to believe he understands that and will make good decisions to address it. World Cup year not an ideal backdrop to prepare but everyone faces that situation.

Come on, Carras - we're with you

I think the players openly backing Carrick definitely helped in his favour. Casimero, Bruno and Mainoo’s comments were all very direct and hopefully that mentality continues into next season.

Those who are hoping for and improvement in performances and style of play will see progress next season im sure. All managers have to play with the players at their disposal and ultimately he found a way to get results and achieve his aim without assets he would have liked in place.

I’m excited for next season without having major expectations. I can see him wanting to build a possession oriented team who like to attack. I can see him trying to utilise the academy more and hopefully integrating 1or 2 into the squad.

Mainly I’m hoping for a happier and more together squad with no drama. There’s been so many issues for various reasons over the last 10 to 15 year’s which I believe has contributed to our decline as much as issues on the pitch and in the boardroom. Hopefully his type of energy manifests this into reality.

Well of course you wouldn’t, you’re overly negative about anything given the chance.
I'm not, I am pretty positive about things, I'm just honest and I try to be objective.

I'm happy with things at united and confident about next season, but I don't like to pretend.

If I was at the helm of a company that has been run in such a chaotic way in the last 15 years, I would love to have a steady pair of hands operating the business for a couple of years, allowing me time to steer the company in a new direction

Not too long ago things looked a lot worse. It‘s a miracle where we are now, and we have a real chance of putting it behind us if we have a good transfer window.

Going from 15th to title winning form ffs.

We all know we aren‘t out of the woods yet, but there’s no point focusing on it.

Yeai agree, though we are a little fortunate that some other teams have been far worse than they could have been. Really been an opening for any team to step up and get 3rd or 4th.

Objectivity and Negativity aren't the same.

Most of games we've won under Carrick post-Arsenal have been either balanced or undeserved. The metrics back this up.

We have about half as many shots under him than we did under Amorim. We're less aggressive.

We'll see the effects of this soon (unless we add some pace to our attack which isn't going to happen unfortunately).

Which shouldn’t come as a shock 2nd part of the season. Fergie used to bang on about results being more important. Plenty of times we played badly but still took the points. That can point towards a good team.

That's fair enough but that wasn't every game

Insinuating we’ve played badly in every game but still picked up the points is pretending, and certainly not objective. That’s what I originally objected to.

We’ve had some good games where we’ve been the better team, some tight games where we’ve shaded it or been more clinical, and some downright poor games.

I didn't say that, that's a strawman.

3 midfielders manager 3 of the top teams in the prem. next seasons going to be interesting. Alls we need now is Fabregas to come and join… I always seen Alonso going to Liverpool and Fabregas to Chelsea.
Fabregas probably waiting for the Barca job. Football is all about timing I guess. My hope is obviously it works out under Carrick and we compete & win the big trophies over his tenure but if it doesn’t work out, I’d hope the timing coincides with Enrique being ready for a new challenge.

No it wasn't, it's disingenuous to say it was.

What else could "but that wasn't every game" possibly have meant in that context of a reply in a thread about our performances Carrick? Stop kidding yourself.

Wasn't every game doesn't mean the opposite...

Nah, you're famously miserable in fairness.

That was about Fergie, highlighting a comparison with Carrick. Therein lies the very obvious insinuation about Carrick. Twisting yourself in knots here!

Carrick won 17 trophies at United while Alonso won 4 at Liverpool….
To be fair he played for Benitez, who for some reason thought Gareth Barry was an upgrade on him. Hard to win things when your manager is that fecking clueless.

No, I just seem to understand English better.

Again, what else could it mean if you’re
saying “not every game” about Fergie in a debate about our performances under Carrick? Feel free to use your supremacy in English to convey what you meant by that comment.

It means exactly what I wrote, not, every, game. That does not insinuate "we’ve played badly in every game", that's not how the English language works.

Kids, stop it here. Half a page of you two discussing what you said and how doesn't interest anyone. You've made your points, time to move on.

Next season is going to be interesting. I hope the WC bound players don't let him down at the start of the season.

We really are the most entertaining team by far in this league, every game is box office.
