I was in hospital for 8 days with Pneumonia, it was a fecker to shift as a perfectly young healthy man. Let alone for someone in Michaels situation, Good luck!

I had it for a couple of weeks but refused to be hospitalised as I had to work (my own business) and I have never been so sick. It is the biggest killer of the old and infirm.

It all depends on how early it's caught. I had the beginnings of it while in university and went to my doctor once my lung started hurting. It was only in one lung and I was on antibiotics quickly so it cleared up in a few days without me changing much. I was miserable though. :(

Given the monitors he has on him, they probably caught it quickly so it could be treated.

Won the fight doesn't actually say cured. These things often reoccur anyway. It also can't be a good sign that they still have him in an induced coma. Fingers crossed for him.

I can't imagine a doctor would use the phrase 'only a miracle can save him' but we have gone a long time without any new statements so I don't know if that's good or bad, probably bad

Schumacher condition shows 'encouraging signs'

Injured Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher has been showing "small, encouraging signs" in his fight for recovery, his family says.

"We are and remain confident that Michael will pull through and will wake up," the relatives said in a statement.

Doctors in France have been working to bring the seven-time champion out of a medically induced coma.

The 45-year-old German suffered a severe head injury in a skiing accident in the French Alps on 29 December.

Encouraging at the very least

Welcome to Manchester reception committee
On Wednesday, Schumacher's manager, Sabine Kehm, released a statement on behalf of his family because of "an increasing interest in [his] condition in light of the start of the Formula 1 season". The full statement:

"We are and remain confident that Michael will pull through and will wake up. There sometimes are small, encouraging signs, but we also know that this is the time to be very patient.

Michael has suffered severe injuries. It is very hard to comprehend for all of us that Michael, who had overcome a lot of precarious situations in the past, has been hurt so terribly in such a banal situation.

It was clear from the start that this will be a long and hard fight for Michael. We are taking this fight on together with the team of doctors, whom we fully trust. The length of the process is not the important part for us.

It is heart-warming to see how much sympathy his family is shown and I can say that the family is extremely grateful for it. However, it should not be forgotten that Michael's family is dealing with an extremely intimate and fragile situation. And I would like to remind all of us that Michael has always actively kept his family out of the public eye and consequently protected their private lives.

We try to channel all the energies we have toward Michael and we firmly believe that this will help him. And we believe that he will also win this fight."

Michael Schumacher could be on the road to recovery.

His manager, Sabine Kehm, revealed that his health is improving.

“I can only say again: There are signs that give us encouragement,” she said.

She also dismissed speculation that the Formula 1 driver’s family are planning on turning his Swiss home into a £10 million hospital as his health dwindles, apparently masterminded by his wife, Corinna.

“The rumours that Corinna remodels her house to bring the supposedly 'hopeless case Michael' home, are absolutely groundless,”

As much as they're trying to positive spin on it, I have very very little hope now

Such an awful situation for the family. Could be one more day or one more decade. The saving grace, if there is one, is that he isn't suffering. Weird to me when you have a guy so hugely in the public eye just lying in a coma all this time, even when the stories about it die down a bit, he's still there in a coma, all this time. It just feels very surreal.

Anybody watch that Louis Theroux doc the other day? 22 year old guy was in a vegetative state for around month and a half and the doctors told the family that he would be like that for the rest of his life and nothing would change. The family were actually, what I described as deluded, absolutely convinced that he would wake up and be the same guy, their religious faith having much to do with the unflinching belief. Turns out, the lucky bastard did just that.

Given what the doctors had said then I would have let go a hell of a lot earlier that they did. Goes to show though, when do you give up? In this case, given that the family can afford all kinds of treatment from the very best brains in the world, I can see this situation being prolonged for quite a while if they can bring him out of the coma successfully.

I could never make that decision.

The time in a coma is directly related to the amount of brain damage. Miracle stories about people who wake up symptom free after months and months are exactly that, miracle stories. They are far from the norm unfortunately.

The BBC reporting that he shows 'moments of consciousness' now. That must offer some hope he could recover to some level at least.

I saw the Theroux doco as well, it was possibly the most heart-breaking hour of television I've ever seen.

The doc is speculating. He doesn't know the actual position of Schumacher's health. I want to bwlieve that Schumacher's group hasn't told the world about the progress he has made because that would mean a long stream of visitors which would impede his further progress. I loved that guy. :(

It's been five months! That's crazy. Really hope the guy pulls through.

I can't even imagine what the family must be going through. How do you respond to a loved one spending five months in a coma, not knowing whether you will ever see them come out of it? How do you get on with your daily lives? In a way it would almost be easier if he had died. And I don't mean to be insensitive by saying that.

Out of his coma and left hospital. No word other than that. Incredible.

Left hospital? Has he recovered a great deal in the last few days or is this simply recognition that all they can do is work with the limited recovery he has already made which can be done at home or another facility if you are rich enough? Hopefully the former but I fear the later.

As far as I know, he left the hospital in Grenoble, because he's stable and is now in a rehabiliation clinic. He woke up from the coma and started to recognise small details a while ago, responded to touches by his wife. His wake moments got longer in the last days. It's certainly a huge step, but he's still far far away from a recovery, let alone a full recovery.

Great news. So what was all that nonsense about no good news ever coming out about him.
He could be awfully damaged. I wouldn't go overboard on this all being good news yet.

The statement however does make it seem like he's barely aware of where he is. It's all, "the family would like to thank the doctors etc etc." rather than "Michael would like to thank..." Suggests he doesn't really have even any basic awareness of whats happening

As my mom always said, “You make your bed, you gotta sleep in it”. So even though I was sure I’d written my last post having anything to do directly with the Michael Schumacher tragedy, I just want to answer the hundreds of questions I’ve already gotten as to the import of todays statement.

1) It is obviously good news that Michael has left the hospital. Because of the length of time since Michael’s injury, and of the specific role of an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in supporting and monitoring the function of the body’s major systems, it’s almost certain that Michael has not simply been discharged from the ICU to a rehab, without having “transitioned” by a stay on the regular wards. I have never seen a head injury patient with a 5 month ICU admission be transferred directly to a rehab facility . . . but anything’s possible.

Remember that there are lots of rehab facilities that can handle ventilated patients, so this transfer also says nothing about whether or not Michael is breathing spontaneously.

2) The moment Sabine announced that Michael had moments of eye opening, we knew he was no longer in a coma. BY DEFINITION. Coma = no consciousness, no eye opening. Open your eyes but unconscious, it’s a vegetative state. Add fluctuating signs of interaction with the environment, it’s a minimally conscious state.

So what does that mean? Sabine is a professional. At the beginning of April, she told us Michael had moments of awakening AND of consciousness. Once again, by saying this, she told us in almost clinically perfect language that Michael was no longer in a coma. She used two terms that only specialists actually distinguish; for laymen being awakeand being conscious are the same thing. This language, then, clearly was used based on discussions with Michael’s care team, and reflected a highly accurate description of his minimally conscious state.

Now, we’re told, with what appears to be a bit of a triumphal air, that Michael is no longer in a coma. As stated above, THIS IS NOT NEWS. I cannot help but think that this is a highly cynical use of language, using the truth to convey an impression that is almost certainly false. I cannot but think that if Michael had emerged AT ALL from the minimally conscious state that Sabine so accurately described in April, we’d be told that Michael is leaving for rehab, that he is having problems expressing himself and will work hard to get better. Or that he’s having to learn to walk, read, write, etc all over again. But no, we’re told what we already know, and pretty much told to not ever expect further updates. Kinda like what I was thinking.

This all leaves a very bad taste in my mouth. And a huge space of sadness for Michael’s family, and for you, his fans.
